After this search is over and a new AD is brought in, that UM realizes a BOT this large has no business making football decisions and they form an advisory board of a smaller group?

They have a smaller group athletics committee. It’s just not as functional as most P5 schools.
Does that count with voting though or do they discuss coaches, for example, then come up with candidates and then have the larger BOT vote?

A better way of saying this is that it's simply not adequately empowered. This is exactly why the President has taken matters into his own hands.

The problem is very multi-fold here, it's not one single thing or person. It's past Presidents, the BOT, the fact that success in football and athletics fell into their laps and was taken for granted, the socialist approach to revenue sharing that has occurred in the past few decades with the way that TV deals and conference revenues have become a pool of shared money, no matter the accomplishments of a given school... I could go on and on.

At the end of the day, UM is not going to be fixed overnight. This weekend is just the beginning of the process. But as they say about substance abusers - the first step is to realize and accept that you have a problem.

We are on the first step of a twelve step program. Let's hope there are no relapses, but expect that there will be.

Im sure they already do.

Im also sure the ones that are on the committee are just not very bright

Because we wouldn't be in this situation if they were

It’s not been utilized appropriately. They don’t really serve a purpose. I can’t speak for smaller irrelevant sports and how they’re used as of late but for instance.. Epstein and Blake ran straight to Manny Diaz when Richt retired - the committee served no purpose. When Richt became available there was no other candidate - the committee served no purpose. It was already decided that DiMare would be the baseball coach - the committee served no purpose. When they hired L was the last time I think they actually utilized the committee but it was an obvious choice at the time.

People generally recognize their weaknesses and willingly like to give up power.

They have no business making any decisions regarding UM forget football. They are sabotaging the school for their own personal gain.

Wasn’t an obvious choice until L approached Miami about the job. They didn’t find him or seek him out. Him or his agent reached out.

Yes, but it needs to NOT be 100% comprised of Trustees, it should be half Trustees and half other UM alums with sports experience, either playing, managing, coaching, and/or administering.

Nope. Mas brothers identified Coach L as a candidate, having gone to his basketball camp. Recommended him to UM, at which point UM reached out and asked for his resume, which he did not have, so he sent his Wikipedia page.

So if we hire Mario, correct me if my math is off, but we will have interviewed a total of 3 candidates to fill the HC job 3 times.

And to add to my comment above.. the chair of that committee is….

David Epstein

Yes. Which is what most people don't understand. It's one thing to "hire a search firm". But the way in which it was done, and the HEAVY reliance placed on Turnkey, has effectively walled off Epstein and his committee from controlling this process.

In a pre-BOT-Civil-War world, maybe Epstein runs the AD search.

In the Turnkey-BOT-Civil-War world, Frenk traded the control of the interview process (given to Turnkey) for plausible deniability and the chance to tell Epstein (who still has a vote on Frenk's future) "hey, don't blame me, bro".

Fascinating inside-the-beltway stuff for those with the patience for this stuff, but most porsters can't see the complex path required to sideline Epstein.
