We're gonna party like it's 2017..

Question for the “old timers” (relatively) here. What the **** did you all do to ND fans during the 89 matchup? I’ve talked to multiple ND Fans about that game, and besides losing, they describe sitting in the stands of the OB as if they were in the middle of a a war zone.

This is very much a "It's a Canes thing, and you would not understand."

The Orange Bowl was part stadium, part prison, part asylum, part zoo.

You have to understand a few things.

First, the immediate parking around the stadium was very minimal. It was all sold at the beginning of the year to Miami alums and boosters. And there was no Uber/Lyft back then. So no matter where the ND fans parked, no matter what direction they came from, they had to go through a gauntlet of Miami fans. And we were ****ED after the 1988 game (and bogus ND national championship).

Second, this was a Saturday night game on the Thanksgiving weekend. Pre-conference championships. Plenty of time for everyone in Miami to focus and build up to the last home game of the year. A game that, literally, the entire country was watching. So there was a lot of anticipation, a lot of Saturday drinking (you could set up well before "five hours before gametime"), and a lot of resentment building to anger.

Third, this was the game that vaulted us back to the National Championship. After losing to FSU at the end of October, when Erickson was hurt an Torretta had to play, we sat at #7 week-in-week-out for the entire month of November. So there was anger about that.

Finally, you have to remember what Miami was like in 1989. With all of the Cuban immigration, Miami was very strongly Catholic. Therefore, many people in South Florida were offended by the whole "Catholics vs. Convicts" thing in 1988. Factor in the bad ref calls from 1988 that cost us the game. Factor in ND playing for a national championship that we should have been playing for. There were ongoing factors about Miami players being characterized as thugs, while players from schools like ND and Pedo State were lionized.

So you mix it all together, and Miami fans HATED the ND team and fans...more and more by the minute...

...and a lot of things were said and done during that game...horrible insults...bullying/intimidation...near fights with people that SCARED the ND fans...throwing cups and other things...spitting...throwing and dumping things inside the stadium...

Just name a "bad behavior at a football game", and I'm sure it happened at UM-ND 1989.

Erickson's scheme and poor OL recruiting left QBs on an island. Erickson, Torretta, Costa, and Collins often took a beating.
 
One of the reasons I will never say a bad word about CMR is because of 2017 vs ND. I still remember Brian Kelly running his mouth pregame to his players pregame saying **** the crowd and **** the turnover chain this that and the third. Once the crowd got riled up(even more after kickoff), his players completely forgot what he said and were frozen with fear. But as someone said once that first pick was thrown, the game was essentially over.

As for 1989, just as The Original Cane said, just on pure hate and disdain alone, that atmosphere was otherworldly and that is just me seeing it on TV. Imagine being there. Everyone saw the corrupt officiating from the year before and every Miami fan wanted blood and guts.

On a side, I still hate Pedo State more than any program in CFB and it grows stronger by the year. The Emperor would be proud.

But "atmosphere" is more than just noise. What is routinely discounted by people who were not old enough to have experienced Orange Bowl games in the 1980s is the hostility and anger and emotion that contributed to the atmosphere, over and above sheer "noise". The 1989 game was one year after "Catholics vs. Convicts" and the Cleveland Gary NON-fumble. It was entirely possible that murders could have been committed in 1989, and I could have committed some of them (and I'm Catholic).

Again, I won't argue decibel-levels. But were there MULTIPLE effigies of opposing players hanging from the upper deck (as with Brian Bosworth when Miami hosted #1 Oklahoma in 1986)? Was there a pre-season decision to stop scheduling games (as when Miami hosted the #20 Florida Gators in 1987)? Was there a pre-season Seminole rap (as when Miami routed #1 FSU 31-0 in 1988)? And I've already mentioned Miami hosting #1 Notre Dame in 1989.

Imagine putting a roof (or even a canopy) on THOSE games, and what decibel-level would have been attained.

You want to argue that Hard Rock had the loudest moments during the 2017 Notre Dame game, I won't dispute that. But if you want to argue for "best atmosphere", the 2017 game doesn't break the Top 5 all-time of anger and hatred and "UM atmosphere".

My three favorite games to re-watch condensed versions are '86 Oklahoma, '89 Notre Dame, and '94 FSU at the OB. I wasn't privileged to attend live but remember the intensity was palpable even watching on television.

Those are some good ones.

I'm telling you, 1987 Florida and 1988 F$U are special ones too. Yes, they were blowouts, but each game had this added component of our opponents being unreasonably arrogant. Florida with the whole "we are dropping UM" stuff, and F$U with the "Seminole Shuffle" rap.

And, sure, maybe I'm a bit impacted by having seen the TAILGATING in addition to the actual game on the field. Quite a bit of rivalry ****-talking at those tailgates and games in 1987 and 1988.

That wasn’t Brian Kelly, it was Mike Elko (DC at the time). Now HC at A&M.
Brian Kelly famously was in a corner and didn’t say much before the game. That’s why ND fans make fun of him.
Brian Kelly was the most easily rattled HC ever. There are multiple screenshots of his huge, dialated eyes before big games.

Thats why it is soooooo stupid for people to keep comparing 2017 to 2025. People do realize that ALL the coaches & players on both teams are different now, right?

Then you have Marcus Freeman shutting up 107,000 A&M fans…

The talent on that team was amazing, starting DTs Tez and Maryland, just ridiculous. And if you watch closely, guys like Ryan McNeil, Jesse Armstead and Darrin Smith were on special teams.

most amazing stat Ive ever seen was that they gave up 2 yards total on punt returns that whole season. Not average -- the season. That seems impossible

I know those teams will never be recreated but with all the talent Mario is bringing in I think before the end of this decade they're going to win another championship

The two week stretch of Virginia Tech and Notre Dame at Hard Rock in 2017 was a great reminder of how fun college football can be.

The best part, besides winning the game was asking the Notre Dame fans in front of us if they were going to make a new 30 for 30 movie about the game.
