We're gonna party like it's 2017..

Correct, Holtz started there in 1986. Miami won vs ND in Miami in 1987 and 1989.

the story is that during the 89 game, Lou Holtz looked around and saw the rabid atmosphere that night at the Orange Bowl, and at that point the decision was made to end the series. The reality is they couldn't win in Miami

It still chaps my hide UM lost the last game of that series in 1990. (Why did we kick to the Rocket!?!?!)

It's a shame, at that time it was THE biggest/best national rivalry in college football -- and I'd argue in all of sports in America

Best experience at any sporting event in my life and my wife and two boys (10 and 8 at the time) were with me. That 10 year old is now in college as of yesterday and I can still see it all so clearly. Magic.
I've been to a lot of amazing games but that night rivaled the 89 ND game and the 85 Bears game when Marino lit them up.

Nationally, both our Defense and Beck will be undersold by the national media. If Beck can start hitting short dimes in midfield and get consistently downfield while mixing it up with a stout running attack, that will set the ND secondary (which admittedly is VERY good this year) up for a Deep Six.

I have no problems with our DL against their running attack. I think both teams will run the ball well, but I think we'll be able to manage their running attack. I think Beck will be the deciding factor in the game and that's what nobody is anticipating because of the injury late last year. I think Beck is going to want to get out from under Cam Ward's shadow and this will be the game in which to do it.

If we can just contain the run game enough to force their new qb to have to drop back I think he will make enough mistakes in that environment to open the door for the dub.

It’s an interesting question, do we try and beat them at their own game or do we try and force the issue and put pressure on their offense to score. With Beck at the helm the presumption is we should be able to score. We have good backs, a great o line, and a qb that can distribute the ball. Weapons on the outside that are unproven but full of potential.

On the road I would say push the issue and try to quiet the crowd at home I’d consider a slightly less aggressive approach at but really why? Just say **** it and go out there and try to push their **** in. Ultimately I can’t resist that mentality.

I KNOCKED OUT A NOTRE DAME FAN THAT NIGHT IN THE BATHROOM AT HALFTIME

Even though this is season opener, not sure anything can match that night in 2017. Just the perfect storm:
  • Richt's 2nd year
  • Two top-7 teams
  • Meaningful late-season game
  • 12-game winning streak dating to the year before
  • National narrative of "Is the U back?"
  • Miracle wins vs FSU and GT after both being postponed due to an actual hurricane
  • National criticism because we cancelled early Ark St game because of said hurricane
  • Beat #13 VT in black uniforms on national TV the week before
  • Epic GameDay on campus (first time ever)
  • Nationwide sensation of the turnover chain (when it actually meant something)
  • ND's DC caught on camera ****-talking us before the game about how we hadn't seen a physical team like them and they were going to shove the chain down our throats
That Bandy pick-6 was just THE moment we'd been waiting on for 15 years and all that built-up tension was let out on one play.

Then laid an egg vs Pitt two weeks later

We've all heard the phrase "the atmosphere was electric" about a million times in our lives. It's usually nonsense.

But that night, at the tailgate, it was ******* electric. It really felt "right" again.

And then the game happened, and I'm sure some old heads (older than me, and I'm 43) will try to tell you such and such game at the OB was louder. Bull****. TOTAL bull****. I've been to a LOT of games at the Orange Bowl. I've heard that place get as loud as it can possibly get. There's a reason my handle on here is what it is....it was the most magical place I've ever had the privilege of visiting. I miss it so much. But that night in 2017, it was just as loud as any of those OB nights. It truly was. I've told this on here before, but after the Bandy pick 6, I got my mouth maybe an inch away from my dad's ear drum, and yelled as loud as I could. I can't remember what I tried to say to him, but in a quiet setting, it'd have put him into the hospital. I probably had a BAC of .35, and I yelled as loud as humanly possible, DIRECTLY into his head. He turned, looked at me, smiled, and just shrugged his shoulders like MJ did after he hit six threes in the finals, as if to say, son, I didn't hear one ******* syllable of that.

That's how loud it was in there. He couldn't make out a single sound from someone yelling at the top of their lungs directly into his eardrum.

Simply magical. If it's half as special as it was that night, I'll remember it forever. The entire day, from waking up with Gameday, to the final whistle, was the reason we love sports and This U. There's just nothing else on earth that can match that intensity and pure jubilation.

FWIW, I have a close friend who is a ND fan. He wasn't there that night, but he has a lot of friends and family who were, and he's told me multiple times since 2017 that they all told him they've never even come close to experiencing an atmosphere like that ever in all their years of going to ND games in South Bend and multiple places across the country. Ever.

I've been to every game at the OB since 79 and only the 89 ND game and 85 Bears game was louder. But not by much.

I wasn't at the 85 Bears game but my dad was and he told me about it no fewer than 100 times growing up. Everyone who was there that night said that was yet another instance of the OB winning the game for the home team.

No no no no

I was at those games, 10 years old for thr ‘85 game and 14 years old for thr ‘89 game and still can vividly remember those games, the night, the stadium rocking, the electricity filling the air so thick you could cut it with a knife. The ‘72 team on the sidelines during the Monday Night Game, standing, watching letting the Fins team playing on that field there is no way in **** you will be allowed to leave this field without victory. The roar of the crowd when they saw the ‘72 team on the field, my old man and my Godfather (RIP) screaming and jumping like little girls as they saw them. Even at that young of an age that moment was the first time, in all my years attending Fins games as a season ticket holder with my dad since the age of 3, it was the first time I wasn’t nervously excited, I knew we were going to win, even the ‘84 AFC Title game I was nervous against the Steelers, but not this one. I am still amazed the stadium did not cave in on itself that night.

‘89 was equally as insane, though this night was rabid vengeance. I am still at awe there were no arrests of rabid fans jumping onto the field charging the sideline of the fighting frenchmen (its a **** church in France people!!) wanting to extract their pound of flesh!

Both nights that iron old girl held strong cus the noise, the intensity, the jumping up and down did all it could to bring her down onto the opposing team. It was an insane asylum overflowing with coked up psychos.

2017 was glorious and the best atmosphere by far at Joe Robbie to date but not ‘85 Bears Monday Night ‘89 vs The Fighting Frenchmen level

Yeah it was a great night but I’m tired of hearing about this. Was this game the pinnacle for our program in the last 20 years?
We hosted college gameday and beat our rival, which was the #3 ranked team in the nation, 41-8 in a prime time night game, after **** near everybody picked against us. The win got us to 9-0, the next day we were ranked #3. That cave troll Paul Finebaum went on his show, admitted he was wrong about us and declared that the U is back.

So as bad as it sounds, it probably is the pinnacle for our program in the last 20 years.
