Takeaways:
The offensive numbers continue to plummet after another abysmal performance on Saturday. The win was great, but when you're gifted 3 turnovers in the first half of a football game, one at your opponent's 35 and another at your opponent's 17, you need to build a big lead (Hey, isn't that what VT did to us?)….instead, Miami only turned those 3 turnovers into 10 points, and the rest of the game was a complete washout until the last drive. Miami finished 84th last year in YPP and 89th in scoring offense, and we all thought there was no way anybody could be as bad as Richt and the Rosier/Perry carousel. Well, at 79th and 104th....it's just as bad, if not worse. Miami does literally NOTHING well on offense. Every single stat is either average, or among the worst in the entire country. It's got to be said that at this point, Dan Enos has been nothing short of an abject failure. Now, the kids are to blame as well. We know all of the issues, but the bottom line is the OC is the head of the snake, it's his job to squeeze all productivity positive out of an offense, and there has been very little. So, it's on him. This is basically the same team as last year, AGAIN. A pitiful offense with spotty QB play sputtering weekly, with a few explosive plays mixed into an overall bowl of diarrhea. Saturday was yet ANOTHER game where the defense clearly outplayed the offense. I will not go overboard in my praise for the defense, as it's certainly had its moments of ineptitude, but Dan Enos should be running out of gift ideas for Blake Baker at this point. This is now 3 games in a row where the offense has been absolutely tragic. The one silver lining here, possibly, is that it looks like the Kosi Perry Experiment is over for the 14th time. Jarren Williams is certainly not a world-beater, but let's be honest here, he's clearly the better QB. Neither of these kids are going to do much behind this OL and with this unimaginative, mind-numbing scheme, but Williams is at least accurate with the football and can move the sticks. Perry's singular upgrade is his escapeability in the pocket, which he showed a couple times to avoid sacks, but he still has zero pocket presence in the ability to feel a rush and keep his eyes downfield. Both sacks he took Saturday were pure panic jobs where he was pressured, and tried to locate the rush with his eyes, stood still in the pocket, and took a sack. He's a better player this year than last, he's willing to take shots downfield, but he's not the better option here. Clearly Williams will start against FSU, and should have some success considering their inability to rush the passer.
Get ready for a pillow fight on Saturday in Tallahassee. I expect another low scoring affair, and another 1 score game, just like Miami has been playing basically every single week. Let's hope the ball continues to bounce our way.
Lastly, just a couple positives to highlight (there's not many). For one, the OL played a little better on Saturday. The QBs were pressured, but it was less than what we've seen previously, and especially considering what Pitt had done to virtually every offense they'd played until now, you have to applaud the OL. Baby steps. They're still horrendous, but at least it wasn't a complete catastrophe. Also the penalties have decreased significantly. Miami had a season low in penalties on Saturday (3) after only having 4 both of the last 2 weeks. Step in the right direction after the terrible start to the year. And 2 of the 3 turnovers were forced....McCloud made a fantastic play on the pick, and Bolden forced another. That needs to continue. FSU has given it away 11 times in 8 games. Would be nice to see the chain 2+ times this weekend.
