Takeaways:

Overall, the numbers continue to slide in the wrong direction since the Clemson game. However, this was another college football game in 2020 where we allowed less than 20 points. You should win every single week if your defense does that for you. 22.2 PPG allowed is pretty **** good. Just for reference, the last 3 years we have allowed 21.9, 21.1, and 21.7 on defense. So, pretty much perfectly aligned with what we've come to expect from the defense. Good, not great. The problem for me last week (and really the last 3 weeks) is the efficiency of the offense. We've now slid back to 5.79 YPP for the season, which is definitely an improvement still from last year, but it's a number that puts you pretty much in the middle of the pack nationally in a normal year. I didn't expect to be Oklahoma, but I expected better than a completely average offense. The first 3 games of the year, we averaged 6.68 YPP. The last 3, we have averaged 4.80 YPP. Almost a full 2 yards worse the last 3 weeks. Yes, 2 of those games were against good defenses, but there was no excuse for only averaging 5.69 YPP last week. That's nowhere near good enough against a defense like UVAs, who has been gashed a lot this year (dead last in the country in 20+ yard plays allowed per game, 2nd to last in 30+ yard plays allowed per game). Yes, we had several explosive plays, and we bogged down in the redzone, but the bottom line is you cannot score 19 points at home against that defense. You MUST be better. I really hope Brevin Jordan is back healthy next week, we clearly need him. This offense is so much more dynamic with him on the field.

On defense, pretty much status quo for what we have come to expect the last 4 seasons. But 5.25 YPP allowed would be the highest number of any season since Manny has been here. So overall I think the defense has been OK, but it has not been as good as years past. And I was as frustrated as anyone Saturday night, but when I went back and watched the game again and calmed down, you really cannot be too angry with giving up 7 points on the first drive of a game and then none again until there are 5 minutes left in the ballgame. It's 2020. If your defense does that, you should be blowing the other team out. Any coach in the entire country would take 7 points allowed halfway through the 4th quarter, against any team. I was disappointed that the offense couldn't take the game by the throat in the middle parts while the UVA offense struggled (3rd quarter they went 3 and out, 3 and out, 4 and out). Sack and TFL numbers are down a bit. Still giving up way too many explosive plays. But that was a really funky gameplan by UVA...hats off to them, there's no way you could have prepared fully for that and after the first quarter or so, the defense settled down.

A little bit better on penalties as well. Still not good, but for how awful this team is traditionally at avoiding penalties, I think you'll take 6 for 38 all day long.

The best stat is 5-1. Overall, that's all that matters. But we know we need to be better to get to Charlotte and give Clemson at least a competitive game. Much better. But I would much rather be sitting here at 5-1 and lamenting the fact that we need to play better rather than doing autopsies after losses to inferior opponents. Just win, baby. On to Raleigh, and hopefully Mr. #9 is out there because, while I won't pin all the struggles of the offense on him, it's clear as day how much of a difference he makes. We absolutely will need him at 100% to beat VT & UNC.
