Week 7 Observations

Mateer actually looked good early during the scripted part and when he had time. Once he stated getting pressured his lack of ability to process really showed.
Yea that int to close out the first half was the killer. You don’t throw that it’s probably 9-3 Oklahoma at half. He honestly shouldn’t have played.

I get the criticism of Lagway— the drifting, the scattershot accuracy, all of that shows up but that’s almost word-for-word what people said about Josh Allen coming out of Wyoming. Huge arm, freak athlete, erratic mechanics, looked like he was playing his own sport half the time. Then he got into a system that coached the chaos out of him, built the offense around his strengths, and gave him protection and a run game.

That’s why I think Lagway would actually fit really well at Miami. Behind Cristobal’s line and with Dawson’s Air Raid structure, he wouldn’t be asked to play hero-ball every snap. He’d get time, rhythm throws, and a run game that keeps defenses honest. The physical tools are already there — what he needs now is what Josh Allen got: repetition, discipline, and an environment that rewards staying on schedule instead of surviving off it.

If Miami can give him that, he could make the same kind of leap from “raw athlete with flashes” to “complete quarterback.”
This discussion point reminds me a lot of Jedd Fisch vs James Coley. For whatever people thought about his system, it was QB friendly. He could take mid QBs and make them excel (Jacory went from broken to serviceable; Morris looked like a potential early round draft pick to undraftable under Coley). I think his read system just made more sense for QBs.

Lagway is still out there playing hurt. You can literally see he physically isn't doing things he would be. He will likely make my Top 5 on potential alone. He shouldn't have been playing at all yet. He is getting experience, though.

Lagway will need a full year of not playing to get fixed. He would be best served sitting a year.

Disagree. You can't really quantify how poor the coaching is. He's being coached by a complete fraud. When Richardson came out, I posted so many quotes and tweets from scouts and execs almost appalled at how bad Billy's scheme is for QB development.

I have no idea what the portal landscape will be this year. And Lagway of course isn't guaranteed to go anywhere, and if he did, his price tag would be enormous. But what you're seeing this season is ZERO indication of his true potential. I mean, we literally just did this for the last 2 years.

Cam Ward was a fumbling machine who couldn't beat a terrible Stanford team just to make a bowl game. And then he became a Heisman Finalist and #1 pick here.

Carson Beck was a turnover machine and poor leader who played himself out of the first, and likely even Day 2, of the draft. And then he came here, and he's the leader for the Heisman trophy and well on his way to being a high NFL pick.

If we keep Shannon Dawson, this program is the Betty Ford Clinic for QBs. My only pause with Lagway is he really has shown no ability to stay healthy. It'd be a big risk. But how he's playing at UiF under that absolute loser has literally zero bearing on his true ability. We thought Beck getting away from Bobo was beneficial to him? Billy is infinitely worse.

The kid from Cal should be our first target and then Lagway. In that order right there. If Rhule leaves for Pedo State, I can see Raiola jumping in the portal too. Don't forget his grandpa played at Miami, and he has seen how UM helped Ward and Beck's draft status.

Albeit, small sample size, but I watched a little of this kid at Cal play at BC and I was not impressed.
Definitely an athletic QB with a good arm but very erratic performance.
I would take Lagway.

Lagway is supposed to have shoulder surgery after this season.

Yeah, it's a risk. He's had injury after injury. Maybe he just literally can't stay healthy. I think "injury prone" is an overused term, but some dudes just really can't stay healthy long-term.
Well, for one, there are some serious issues with UF’s S&C program. Half the team has had lower extremity issues over the past year. But also, Lagway has had shoulder, core, hernia, hamstring, foot, and ankle issues since he’s been at UF, and none have really been able to heal, which is hard. The shoulder in particular is an issue that has stemmed since high school and they considered having the surgery this past offseason but postponed.

It really sucks for the kid because had he not been so loyal to Billy / UF, I think he would’ve overcome the shoulder just fine.

I don’t know if you’re in the minority re: Lagway, but I cringe watching him play QB and for different reasons than the guys who just stand on their spot. This dude drifts into the ether and then has the accuracy of a 9 year old girl shooting her first 12 gauge shotgun. I’ve compared some of his throws to Ricky Vaughn pre-glasses in Major League Baseball I.
Agree. Luke Nickel is our starter next year.

Yes actually he did. He broke it in the game against Auburn in the first quarter and still threw 24/36 for 271 yards, 1 TD 0 ints. He was supposed to be out 1 month and it's been a few weeks.
So he was able to throw accurately with a broken hand against Auburn but he forgot how to do it against Texas? I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt for throwing some of the worst passes I’ve ever seen in a college game because his hand was still hurt but you’re saying he was able to throw just fine against Auburn.

Unless there’s some major stud in the portal I’m thinking Luke is our guy.
People said this exact thing last year. There WILL be another experienced starter in the portal again. Now, whether or not we pursue him is another story.

I’m just not sure who that guy will be, obviously. I’d love for us to have a guy that we can count on for at least two years…

He had surgery after that game that was supposed to take a month or more to heal, and he was back in 17 days. So yes he did power through that game with an injury. The surgery is going to make it worse before it gets better. The real issue is he never should have been back for this game. At the end of the day, he says it wasn't a physical issue, and he just made poor throws, but for all we know that may or may not be just media talk.

At this point Last year we had no idea that Carson Beck would transfer away from Georgia. Two years ago we had no idea who Can Ward even was unless you were watching late night PAC 12 games. Ideally, you’d like to develop your own guy and have him for a few years but if that doesn’t work, there is always going to be portal options. If you’re willing to spend, you can get a first round quality quarterback.

I asked this question in the off season and it’s worth asking again.

When do the injuries become too much and Lagway decides to make baseball his primary sport. If I was his parent I would at least encourage him to consider this.
