Week 6 Stat Roll

What was VT before this week? Pitt's QB is playing well this year -- think he put up 400 yards against PSU and then scored however many against UCF. UVA has a coherent plan on offense which sure will beat up whatever plan we fart out, and FSU is going to pick apart our pathetic secondary.

This defense is BAD, OBM.

VT only had 337 yards of offense Saturday. 5.35 YPP. They just had short fields all day and the defense couldn't stop them for **** in the redzone, hence the 42 points.

Prior to that, in their 2 games against non-high school teams, they put up 4.97 YPP against BC and 4.11 against Duke. So yes, the defense was terrible Saturday, but 5.35 YPP isn't catastrophic.

Pitt has been held under 5 YPP 3 times already this year (UVA, UCF, Duke) and got 5.21 against Penn State.

Again, yeah, I agree the defense is bad. But 600 yards is insane. Miami hasn't even given up 500 yards in a game since 2016. Haven't given up 600 since 2012.

I'm sure we'll find some way to make Perkins and Pickett and Hornibrook look good though, even though they're all average at best.

Manny’s defense has always been predicated on turnovers and we haven’t been getting them this year.

You don't need explosive YPP if the offense is out on the field all the time. Which is something I expect against UVA and Pitt considering their defenses and our all-time pathetic OL. We may not give up the yards but we'll certainly give up the points.

Actually one of the only stats Miami isn't horrible on is TOP. They've been possessing the ball plenty.

The red zone defense and penalties have been the main issues with the defense. Teams aren't gaining a ton of yards, but they're capitalizing when they do get their chances and Miami can't stop beating themselves.

Oh, and then when you turn the ball over on 4 straight possessions to start a football game, it's kind of hard to win. Especially so when your defense allows the opposition to score a TD every time you turn it over to them.

We're exceptionally bad at situational football on both sides of the ball. Just one things goes off script and we cannot stop from pouring salt into our own wounds. Those first 8 drives to start the game was surreal to watch. Only at Miami, baby!

As always, only games vs FBS competition are factored. I hope anyone wasn't planning on keeping down their breakfast this morning.

Takeaways:

As we all know, this is an average to bad football team in pretty much every aspect. The offensive metrics got a little better last week, but we know that's a bit of fool's gold as Miami was in catch-up mode all day and VT was content to play soft for most of the afternoon. Headed into the week, the biggest concerns were sacks, penalties, and 3rd downs. Well, Miami was awful again in all 3 components. This is a very poorly coached football team right now. Undisciplined, dumb, lack of leadership, lack of emotion...you name it. But to be 2nd to last in penalties, 126th in penalty yards, 124th in 3rd down conversions, and dead last in sacks allowed is simply inexcusable and should be fireable offenses should this continue through the year. Really not much more to say other than it's an average offense with an average defense and the entire team is poorly coached. Other than that, things are great. Oh, and Miami has the worst kicker in the country. Baxa is broken and needs to take the Feagles route immediately. Are there any field goal kickers in Australia?

I believe Manny's decision to get more involved with the defense is the direct result of the red zone performance, specifically. VT had 6 TDs in 6 trips. Last year Miami only allowed 19 red zone TDs all season. This year they've allowed 11 already. And in all 3 losses, Miami has scored in the 4th quarter to either take the lead or tie the game, and in all 3 games the defense gave up an immediate TD on the next possession. That's not what we've seen here over the past 3 years.

I count 12 stats that Miami is 100th in the country or worse. And they're not all in 1 area. 3rd down %, rushing offense, penalties, sacks, red zone defense....it's just awful across the board. Again, inexcusable.

Miami has a game against a good team in 4 days. In my opinion, a loss against UVA will cause Miami to miss a bowl game this year. They'd have to go 4-2 the rest of the way just to reach 6 wins, and the only games I'd be confident to win would be GT and FIU. Losses at Pitt, at FSU, at Duke and to Louisville would not surprise me in the least bit. So yes, the season is over in terms of the big goals. But a 5-7 year would be catastrophic, and IMO a loss on Friday would have the team headed to 4 or 5 wins at best. Hold your breath Friday.....

Baxa does need to hit his chip shots but I wonder if it might be a holder issue. How do you not have laces out on an XP?
