As always, only games vs FBS competition are factored. I hope anyone wasn't planning on keeping down their breakfast this morning.

Offense:

Yards per play: 50th (5.95 YPP)
Points per game: 87th (24.3 PPG)

TFLs allowed per game: 129th (10.5 per game) -- Only FAU is worse at 11.5 per game
Red Zone TD %: 96th (50% TD rate, 8 TDs in 16 chances)
Red Zone Scoring %: 112th (11 scores in 16 chances)

Sacks per game: 32nd (2.75 sacks per game)
3rd down % allowed: 46th (35.19% allowed)
4th down % allowed: 119th (100% allowed) -- This is tied for dead last in the country....we haven't stopped a 4th down conversion yet
TFLs per game: 26th (7.5 per game)
Red Zone td % allowed: 111th (73.3% allowed -- 11 TDs in 15 chances) NOTE: This is the stat that Miami had the biggest drop from last week to this week, due to VT having 6 red zone trips and scoring 6 TDs. Last year Miami allowed 50% TDs on red zone trips (19 out of 38). Already allowed 11 in only 15 trips this year.
Red Zone Scoring % allowed: 118th (93.3% allowed -- 14 scores in 15 chances)

Advanced metrics:

Overall SP+: 32nd
Offensive SP+: 47th
Defensive SP+: 31st
Special Teams SP+: 109th
Sagarin Ranking: 55th
Massey Rankings: 74th

Takeaways:

As we all know, this is an average to bad football team in pretty much every aspect. The offensive metrics got a little better last week, but we know that's a bit of fool's gold as Miami was in catch-up mode all day and VT was content to play soft for most of the afternoon. Headed into the week, the biggest concerns were sacks, penalties, and 3rd downs. Well, Miami was awful again in all 3 components. This is a very poorly coached football team right now. Undisciplined, dumb, lack of leadership, lack of emotion...you name it. But to be 2nd to last in penalties, 126th in penalty yards, 124th in 3rd down conversions, and dead last in sacks allowed is simply inexcusable and should be fireable offenses should this continue through the year. Really not much more to say other than it's an average offense with an average defense and the entire team is poorly coached. Other than that, things are great. Oh, and Miami has the worst kicker in the country. Baxa is broken and needs to take the Feagles route immediately. Are there any field goal kickers in Australia?

I believe Manny's decision to get more involved with the defense is the direct result of the red zone performance, specifically. VT had 6 TDs in 6 trips. Last year Miami only allowed 19 red zone TDs all season. This year they've allowed 11 already. And in all 3 losses, Miami has scored in the 4th quarter to either take the lead or tie the game, and in all 3 games the defense gave up an immediate TD on the next possession. That's not what we've seen here over the past 3 years.

I count 12 stats that Miami is 100th in the country or worse. And they're not all in 1 area. 3rd down %, rushing offense, penalties, sacks, red zone defense....it's just awful across the board. Again, inexcusable.

Miami has a game against a good team in 4 days. In my opinion, a loss against UVA will cause Miami to miss a bowl game this year. They'd have to go 4-2 the rest of the way just to reach 6 wins, and the only games I'd be confident to win would be GT and FIU. Losses at Pitt, at FSU, at Duke and to Louisville would not surprise me in the least bit. So yes, the season is over in terms of the big goals. But a 5-7 year would be catastrophic, and IMO a loss on Friday would have the team headed to 4 or 5 wins at best. Hold your breath Friday.....

Red Zone Defense stands out. How did we go from last years defense to letting up 42 to a VT team that scored 24 on Furman.

Boy, that redzone defense is terrible. Teams getting whatever they want when they get there

Yup, only gave up 19 red zone TDs last year in 12 games (against FBS teams)

Already given up 11 this year in just 4 games.
I was Going to make a thread about the redzone defense but didn’t know all the stats in the other game. Did know that va tech was 6 for 6 with all tds though and that’s completely unacceptable and fcs level sh*t. It shows your dc doesn’t know what he’s doing

Redzone TD % allowed against FBS teams with Manny here:

2016 -- 22nd (52.6%)
2017 -- 46th (56.4%)
2018 -- 15th (50%)

2019 -- 111th (73.3%)

****.... Well what's the good news Sam?

Those defensive stats are only going to plummet. UVA, PITT, FSU all going to put up 600 yards 35+ points

UVA is 101st in YPP
Pitt is 107th
FSU is 57th

If any of those teams put up anywhere close to 600 yards of offense, Baker needs to be fired the Sunday morning after.

I get what you're saying, but let's not go berserk.

What was VT before this week? Pitt's QB is playing well this year -- think he put up 400 yards against PSU and then scored however many against UCF. UVA has a coherent plan on offense which sure will beat up whatever plan we fart out, and FSU is going to pick apart our pathetic secondary.

This defense is BAD, OBM.

Elite post...thanks for your work...

All of the metrics we are horrible in translate to atrocious coaching, attention to detail, and preparation.
