- the portal and NIL has hurt Georgia more than anyone. They just don’t have the ability to stockpile talent like they used to.
- In the age of the portal, evaluating teams based on returning production isn’t going to work. Clemson and Penn State were rated highly based solely on that. Penn State could still do something but they obviously could have upgraded in certain spots.
- A good GM is so important. There are so many players that can upgrade a roster that fly under the radar. I’ve never heard of most of the portal guys Miami, Texas Tech and Indiana brought in. Even Florida State was able to upgrade pretty significantly. When you have a few difference makers on both sides of the ball, the key is to eliminate any weaknesses. Bringing in Scott, Thomas and Toure has significantly improved the defense. They’re not stars but they’re not players you can pick on.
- By the end of the year Dante Moore and Beck will be the top 2 quarterbacks. Neither plays a really tough defense the rest of the season- unless you count Iowa and Indiana for Moore. In 9 weeks after playing 9 straight ACC teams where he’s going to have forever to throw and our WRs who can’t separate against elite DBs will suddenly be able to separate Beck will start getting favorable comparisons to Goff.
- Watching Penn State I thought they were built similarly to us. Fortunately we’re so much better at quarterback and we have this years Abdul Carter.
- It’s startling to see the disparity in quarterback play. It’s amazing that there are top tier programs that don’t have serviceable quarterbacks. How on earth do programs like Texas, Auburn, and LSU have quarterbacks who can’t throw accurately 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. Jackson Arnold gives me flashbacks to Kirby Freeman. There’s just no hope when you have that level of qb play.
- For all the flack he takes, not many coaches could have done the job he has building the program up like he has. He’s got Miami in a better position than all the other coaches from that cycle except Oregon. And Lanning inherited a team that had just beaten Ohio State in Columbus. Name me 3 coaches that could have built Miami up like this.
- After week 5, this is the first time in 23 years I can say I wouldn’t fear playing anyone in CFB. We have a weakness with explosive players on offense but so did Georgia and Alabama- early Saban years. Oregon and Ohio State aren’t anywhere close along the lines of scrimmage. Ohio State has the best back 7 I’ve seen in years though. But Sayin just gives me big Cade Klubnik vibes. Moore on the other hand is a difference maker.
