Another great Saturday of college football (week 2) at Coach JB's Football Bar and Cigar Lounge (we also watched the fights) for 'Footballpalooza'. Some thoughts on what I witnessed throughout the day...
- Still stunned by Texas's comeback over THE Ohio St. Arch Manning showed some real guts late and certainly Ryan Day is taking heat late for blowing a 23-3 second half lead. But at the same time, the first half INT -- that was incredibly fluky off the body of Cam Coleman -- and the dropped TD of Ryan Wingo really changed that game early on.
To me the comeback began when Julian Sayin missed a wide open layup down the seam to Devin McCuin that would've put the Buckeyes up 27-3. In big games, every point counts no matter how much you're up.
As for Manning, I was seated next to Shaun King who stated that Sark is just better off letting him play a bit of school yard ball. Let him run around first, and not expect him to always play within structure on a consistent basis like a Matt Leinhart-type of quarterback he's guided in the past. To that, I'd play more up-tempo with him.
Great game in Austin, truly memorable. But the reality is in the 12-teeam playoff system it doesn't have quite the same meaning. Both teams could actually play again in December or January.
- The other big story, Oregon was upset by Okie St (who looked terrible vs Tulsa last week). And take away two INT's that were basically pick-6's, and the Cowboys were clearly the better team in Stillwater. Drew Mestaker, 'the Touchdown Maker'(with all due respect to Stehpen Baker) had a rare 300-100 game (passing/rushing). OSU out-gained OU 554 to 281, and had over twice as many first downs (25-12).
As stunning as this was, this was no fluke. What I've seen of the Ducks through two weeks, they look like a three loss team. Oline is shaky and the highly touted Dline looks a bit overrated. The loss of both coordinators looks like it's being felt for Dan Lanning.
- Not sure if Michigan-Oklahoma was a defensive battle or offensive struggle. It was probably a bit of both in 'the Big House' as the Wolverines rebounded to win a 17-10 slog. Bryce Underwood wasn't great, but he was better, as he was utilized more in the plus-one run game. This is formula for Michigan moving forward, I wonder how effective it will be when they need to score more points
As for OU, John Mateer can be an exciting player at times, but he doesn't look like he processes well, and he's inaccurate with his intermediate throws. To be fair, the Sooners didn't run the ball well, and it doesn't look like Billy Sims or Adrian Peterson are walking through that door.
- The most dramatic game was Wake Forests 38-36 double-OT win at Purdue. Gio Lopez looks much better this season back with his old coordinator (Rob Ezell). Now they face Miami on Friday night. I believe they will move the ball on the Canes defense and score a few points. However, I think they give up a lot more in return.
- Texas Tech scuffled with Oregon St in Corvallis. They were actually losing into the 4th quarter. But they simply had too much depth for the Beavers. Transfer Thomas Castellanos threw a late TD to seal the 35-24 victory.
- Tennessee is really going to lean on their run game while they allow true freshman, Faizon "Love'' Brandon to grow into the job. Desean Bishop had another big game ( 18 carries ,147 yards and 2 touchdowns) and the defense created points for the Vols who ran away from Georgia Tech 45-24. This will be a different kind of Josh Huepel offense, at least early on this season.
- Washington just eked by Utah St. Second week in a row that they have underwhelmed. Again, many tabbed them to be a playoff contender. Not seeing it thus far.
- The likes of UGA, Notre Dame, Ol' Miss and Indiana crushed tomato cans this weekend.
- USC continues its pre-season as they moved to 3-0 by cruising past Lousiana, 49-30. Right now, I'd make them a favorite over Oregon on September 26 at the Coliseum.
Some stuff from Friday night....
- There was an old Big East showdown between BC and Rutgers, and it was like a battle between gonorrhea and syphilis -- I mean, which is worse? AJ Surace might be the worst quarterback in the P4. Ive never seen a guy stare down his receivers quite like he does. As for the Eagles, they found a way in the 'Red Bandana Game' to win this, 28-21. If you're Rutgers, I think you have be having some hard conversations about Greg Schiano.
- L'Ville rolled over Villanova 59-13. Lincoln Keinholz put up huge numbers (16 for 21, 331 yards, 2 TDs), if he can ever hit the routine throws consistently, he'll be incredible. He's a real athlete with live arm. There is a lot of speed surrounding him. Former Hurricane, Jaleel Skinner, had a 69 yard TD. The Cards vs SMU will be a real shootout.
- Mizzou was simply too big and strong for KUU. Take away a blocked kick that was taken back for a touchdown and it was clear that the Tigers were the better team. Austin Simmons can really throw that ball and two of his receivers had over 100-yards. Ahmad Hardy still is not back but Jamal Roberts is a big play back in his own right. Simmons threw a laser shot to Brett Norfleet late to ice it.
