So the final week of the college football regular season is in the books. Yeah, it was a blur. Another great 'Footballpalooza' at Coach JB's Touchdown Bar and Cigar Lounge. No matter the changes in this sport (most of which I don't like) it's still by far my favorite season of the year -- by far.

Some thoughts on what took place:

- UGA grinds out a tough victory over Gatech at the Benz, 16-9 in a defensive battle. I'll say this again, this is not Kirby Smart's best team, but this is the best job of coaching he's ever done. He has found ways to lead his 'Dawgs to victories in various ways and now they face Bama in rematch for the SEC title.

- On Thursday on 'the Coach JB Show' I thought Texas would beat the Aggies at home. And they took over in the second half on Friday night. I give Sark credit, this team has come a long ways not just from the squad that got beat by Florida at 'the Swamp' but their escapes vs Kentucky and Miss St

- Ryan Day got King Kong off his back as Ohio St finally beat the Wolverines again. Michigan started hot, but once they settled for two FG's early on, you got the sense that their window to really pull the upset was closed. Julian Sayin has really had a strong season, while the highly touted Bryce Underwood has been... just OK, I guess. But to be fair, he doesn't have Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate outside.

- This Lane Kiffin dominated this weekend. My view is that if he's not going to be the coach at Ole Miss next season, he should start at his next job and the Rebels go into the playoffs with an interim coach. Yeah, it's not convenient or fair, but then, life isn't convenient or fair. Adult decisions come with adult consequences.

I don't think there's any doubt that his own professional history is being held against him, here. But to paraphrase Bo Schembechler, 'Ole Miss wants an Ole Miss Man to lead Ole Miss in the playoffs."

Can anyone with an agenda disagree with that. BTW, what was that song that 'Whodini' had that describes Lane?

- Oklahoma has an elite defense, but John Mateer struggled for large stretches vs LSU, but they found a way to win (17-13) to seal their playoff bid. Brent Venables had exactly the season he needed to secure his place at OU long term against a real gauntlet of a schedule

- Diego Pavia deserves Heisman consideration. He had 268 yards passing and 165 rushing as the 'Dores just ran away from the Vols in their 'Senior Day' at Neyland Stadium. After being down 21-14, it seemed that every time I glanced towards this game Vandy was busting out a big play. Regardless, Pavia has been the most transformative player in this programs history. They should being naming stuff in his honor or retiring his jersey in years to come

- So the ACC title game is Virginia vs Duke. This is what happens when you have these conferences that are so large that teams don't play one another and/or you get rid of the league format.

- The best true freshman QB I saw this season was JK Sagapolutele of Cal. This gunslinging southpaw has real arm talent. And after the Golden Bears blew a big second half lead, he then put together a late go-ahead drive vs SMU. Cal eventually came out victorious 38-35. JKS had 330 yards and 4 touchdowns. Costly loss for SMU that lost their spot in the ACC title game

- 'the Iron Bowl' was memorable. Bama just out big early on (17-0) and then Auburn clawed back to tie it. And then Kalen Deboer gambled late on the Tide's late go-ahead TD. I would've just kicked the FG on 4th and goal from the 2. As for the Tigers, I've never seen a team be so sloppy with ball security throughout the game. They have some real talent on both sides of the ball but this is why they ended up with losing record.

To be fair, SEC officials did their part to in aiding Bama.

- Colorado lost to K-State 24-14 in Manhattan, to finish 3-9 in Coach Prime's third season in Boulder. I don't think anyone believes any more.

It’s in Lane’s contract that he has to leave if he takes another job. Ole Miss obviously saw this coming. Lane is threatening that he will poach the roster if they don’t let him coach. Supposedly.
