Some thoughts on Week 1 of college football...

- In the immortal words of Bill Parcell : ''Can we put away the anointing oil?" This is in regards to Arch Manning. Yeah, there was 'Arch Madness' alright. Pundits who had placed him on All-America teams and put him on various lists among other elite players like Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs despite having very little production. It was like having a boxer on pound-for-pound lists after having two 4 round fights.

He looked like a Qb with very little experience at the Horseshoe vs an Ohio St defense that had to replace a ton of NFL guys but still looked formidable. This isn't to write off Manning, he may still be very good down the line and he showed some signs of life in the 4th quarter. But I have never seen a more overhyped player coming into a season based on his production

- What a difference a year makes for Thomas 'Bambino' Castellanos. One year ago he had FSU fans reneging on bets to dog crap out of red cuts and disappearing like Keyser Soze, now he has le the Noles to a big win over Bama -- and like Babe Ruth he called his shot. TC is a much better fight with the Malzahn offense than Bill O'Briens. There was nothing fluky about this victory, after being down 7-0, FSU was the superior team in every way

As for Bama, I think DeBoer might have gone home and found a 'For Sale' sound planted on his front lawn. Another loss to an unranked team -- something that rarely happened to his predecessor.

- This is something I'll be monitoring the whole season, the 'Trading Places' of college football between Nico Iameleava and Joey Aguilar at UCLA and Tennessee. After week 1, advantage Aguilar, who played a solid game (and hit some deep shots that were constant overthrows last season for the Vols) while UCLA got run over by a very good looking Utah squad. Again, was the grass greener for Nico?

So which guy will be the Eddie Murphy character, which one will be Dan Ackroyd

- Speaking of the Utes, I really like this team. Dont count on Kyle Willingham, just yet. Devin Dampier stays healthy, they will control the clock and tempo, and they have a stout defense lead by John Henry Daley and Logan Fanu.

- Hard nosed game between LSU and Clemon that I watched with Geo Millian at the world famous Duffy's Tavern in Miami. Geo pointed out that for as good a numbers as Cade Klubnik, he struggled last year vs the good teams. Well, Geo's point was buttressed again, as the Tiger unit was throttled after halftime. LSU is going to be a really good offensively eventually, I like their WR unit (Anderson, Brown, Green) that Nuss has to throw to

- Watching Jackson Arnold on Thursday, good start to this Auburn career, but you wonder if they will throw enough to take advantage of their talented WR crew outside. But make no doubt about it, Hugh Freeze needed that victory in Waco.

- Tough start for Coach Prime in the post-Shadeur/Hunter era. The way the Buffs handled that last drive will be scrutinized for a while. I believe that getting that initial first down is so key in those situations, so you want to try and throw beyond the sticks as soon as possible. But I see too many drives where short passes and completed and teams try and save timeouts, but then end up wasting 35-40 seconds after gaining just a few yards. I think strongly now you're just better off taking the timeout and re-setting your offense.

- OK, so the #Canes season starts tonight. Based on week 1, South Florida and FSU look like they will be tougher outs than expected. Byrum Brown has a game similar to Castellanos in terms of his athleticism in an offense that can go fast tempo. But before all that, they have a game tonight. See you at the Hard Rock....

- Ron Powlus

- We'll see

- DeBoer has been Bama's Head Corch for 4/14 Ls to unranked opponents in modern history...good job...he really trying to be a ded man walk'n

- Show me the MONEY!!!! Does UCLA have a clawback clause?

- It's a dry heat in Utah

- Didn't you think both Nuss + Cade were kinda meh? Or maybe just Os were meh all together?

- Hugh better win on The Plains or he's gonna be on receiving end of hooker calls to make ends meet next season...he gonna get hit with a YellaWood 2x4

- Media actually focused on Prime's Depends branded sideline portapotty as a result of his new bladder post-cancer surg...goodness let the asteroid strike us

- If Miami is ever to take the next step, while USF and FSU might be "respectable", in no way, shape, or form should they be tough outs for a high performance Canes squad

Clemson as a whole struggled last year against all good teams they played.. they backed into acc championship game and then got in playoff because of that
Yep. Only beat two above .500 teams last year. 7-5 Pitt and SMU. Klubnick is not an elite QB. Good, but can’t count in him in the big games

The #1 reason I’m not sold on Cade Klubnick at all is that whenever Clemson has a big game, Garret Riley puts handcuffs on him. Their own coaches don’t trust him to win games for them. They stick to a bunch of screen passes and roll out dump off passes. Almost nothing downfield. They play it way too close to the vest. He’s the literal definition of game manager. He won’t turn it over and make stupid decisions but he won’t make plays either. They hope to break long plays on tunnel screens and with the run game.

Most impressive team I saw yesterday was FSU

Much to the delight of many of our fans

Their defense was actually pretty good last year and they looked very athletic yesterday

I don’t know if the offense was that good or Bama was just caught on their heels, but the defense should keep them in games

I saw a lot of really poor QB play in the games I watched which I think helps push my optimism about Miami up a few notches. Experience definitely matters

I have no idea if the wheels will fall of Castellanos later on, but Ive said the whole off-season he is a good fit for what Malzahn likes to do. And guys like Danzy and the freshman RB(Kromah?) are good looking young players
