Butch has two special gifts:1) he is the greatest recruiter of college talent ever. 2) he is almost if not better at building a coaching staff. Add that up and you have the X's and the O's pus the Jimmies and the Joes. I don't see alot of detailed substance as to WHY Butch would be a bad hire, outside of playing the odds that he can't do it again. But your are entitled to your opinion. Out of curiosity, who is your choice of the names being bandied about and what are your detailed reasons why they would do better than Butch?

I think Butch would do well here and would have an immediately impact in terms of ticket sales and in going a long ways toward salvaging the current recruiting class. But it looks like a moot point. From what i've read the administration views him as toxic due to what happened at NC and especially with Miami still on probation. Any infraction under Davis' watch, whether directly tied to him or not, and you can forget about the NCAA showing any leniency.

The more i look at the situation, the more i like the thought of getting someone like Fuente. Someone who would be great for Kaaya and the young guns like Shirreffs and Allison. I'm not sure Herman would be a good fit for those guys.

A good amount of the fanbase lives in the past. From their pro style offense fascination , 4-3 defense and hiring former Canes. Nostalgia can be a ***** sometimes.

That being said, I'd be ok with Butch for 4-5 years. He's not my first choice and he's a suspect gameday coach .Who needs elite coaches . But I do know we'll load up with talent, he'll coach kids up, they'll be tougher and probably leave the program in pretty good shape.

In the 90's, when schollys were limited, I suspect that the admin/admissions staff worked with Butch to make sure he got the players he wanted. Low quantity, high quality tradeoff. At UNC, it appears that he had similar support, particularly when it came to keeping his players enrolled. How sure are we that the current administration is going to provide that same sort of support now? If we're confident in this, then Butch is a good hire. If not, then UM may want to look elsewhere (to an offensive-minded coach who can make up for the pansies on the OL through strategery). Butch isn't going to outcoach anyone.
