Hiring Butch Davis would really lazy. In everyone's fantasy world Butch is hired as head coach and someone like Dorsey comes along under him as OC to be groomed to take over in 3-5 years. Then Ed Reed and Ray Lewis coach the defense while Devin Hester coaches special teams. Put your nostalgic thoughts aside for a minute and think.

Butch was a great coach, great recruiter and built the best college football team of all time. Chances of that happening again under Butch are very slim. Butch is a safer pick in some people's minds. But hiring him as our next coach would be a step backwards IMO. Butch wants to get another shot to rewrite the ending to his Miami story. Selfish reasons aside he shouldn't be given the job. He had his shot and left on his own accord. If that had worked out he wouldn't be in the conversation. Do not take what I say as a sign of disrespect because I mean none.

Many fans and players have cited we need to get back to playing Miami football. All that really means is we need to get back to winning games. I don’t care if you run the option. I don’t care if you run out of the pistol or if you run out of the shotgun. I don’t care if you run a triple threat. Just win. There is no guarantee that Butch would win. In fact you’d be hard pressed to find a situation where a coach returns to a former school in the same coaching capacity and does better. It just doesn’t happen.

The same thing that doomed Al Golden can easily doom the next regime that takes over if not thought through objectively and thoroughly. The dumbest thing you can ever do as an organization is think you can do it the old way forever. Or that the old way is the only way. That mentality just won’t work. That mentality is what got us into this mess to begin with. It’s the reason we hired Coker and Shannon instead of a respectable coach.

So instead of being lazy this time let’s not be lazy; as a fan base let’s not be lazy. The school has already given indications that they aren’t going to be lazy this time around. There are much better options than there were in 2010 when we were down to the three stooges.

The football landscape pre-BCS and now post-BCS have changed dramatically thanks to Utah, Boise State and UCF. ESPN changed it by airing **** near 90% of the games each weekend in FBS. But going back to the glory days and trying to recreate success the same way just won’t work. It’s the lazy way…..

Butch Davis is not a lazy hire. The facts that he was very successful here long time ago, available, and wants the job shouldn't negate his great attributes.
He traveled around the country as TV analyst, watched how the game of football has changed and is very knowledgeable regarding whats' work and what doesn't at this time.
I think he is adaptive and his assistants (as he recently said) will be aggressive young innovative coaches.

POTATO.

Butch will turn this dumpster fire into a Championship machine......and fast.

Butch or Herman! I want Butch more out of nostalgia, but my mind tells me Herman is a better choice for the new era of CFB! If we were another P5 team, who would we want? It's hard to know and I would interview both. Both are good choices.

He will bring great staff with him. That's what we need, the only ones talking about 2001 ate the ones criticising us. You're not a Butch Davis fan. It wasn't TV that made Butch recruit kids to Miami. Its his vision, talent development. Bringing in players that weren't complete and making them better. Coaching them hard, u just don't change that. Regardless of results, these kids will be coach properly. We are crying out for that. Not no nostalgia. BTW you could simply have written this in one of the other threads bashing Butch

Butch is a no brainer!!!! Would we win a National championship? maybe ... maybe not. He would at least make us relevant again... like top 10 relevant

Anyone upset with Butch for leaving the first time needs to get over it. Going to the NFL is the dream of most every coach ,just like a player going . He put the best team in the history of football together when he was here and can do it again. He has all the conections to put a great staff together once again. Hire him and get a young OC to take his place when he is ready.

It has more to do with the 4 rings in the prior years and him being a part of it.

There's some truth to this post. Even though you'll be going to Bolivia, and I'll be joining you for my post. In which I don't care .

A good amount of the fanbase lives in the past. From their pro style offense fascination , 4-3 defense and hiring former Canes. Nostalgia can be a ***** sometimes.

That being said, I'd be ok with Butch for 4-5 years. He's not my first choice and he's a suspect gameday coach .Who needs elite coaches . But I do know we'll load up with talent, he'll coach kids up, they'll be tougher and probably leave the program in pretty good shape.

This is a huge hire for the programs future, and I think he's a lazy hire, but the safest.

the man wants to build a dynasty and crush bama. he basically says if he stayed at UM, saban's run wouldnt have happened.

Why are they slim? Prove it. I mean, he was building a monster team at NC before the scandal that had been going on for 12 years before he arrived hit.
He took the Cleveland Browns to their first playoff game in 25 years. The owner died that year and the new owner wanted to take the team in a new direction. They haven't won **** since he left.

What if Davis has improved as a gameday coach while retaining his eye for talent and player development? Could that not be the case?

Congratulations. Now go ask for your money back because your learned NOTHING. Butch has two special gifts:1) he is the greatest recruiter of college talent ever. 2) he is almost if not better at building a coaching staff. Add that up and you have the X's and the O's pus the Jimmies and the Joes. Put that together in the sand pits he will rebuild at his Miami speed camp and you have one **** of a football team in 3 years. Butch is lazy in the sense that if Urban or Saban called and said I'll take the job for free, you probably should be shot if you do not say yes. If that is lazy then hiring Butch is lazy.
