Hiring Butch Davis would really lazy. In everyone's fantasy world Butch is hired as head coach and someone like Dorsey comes along under him as OC to be groomed to take over in 3-5 years. Then Ed Reed and Ray Lewis coach the defense while Devin Hester coaches special teams. Put your nostalgic thoughts aside for a minute and think.
Butch was a great coach, great recruiter and built the best college football team of all time. Chances of that happening again under Butch are very slim. Butch is a safer pick in some people's minds. But hiring him as our next coach would be a step backwards IMO. Butch wants to get another shot to rewrite the ending to his Miami story. Selfish reasons aside he shouldn't be given the job. He had his shot and left on his own accord. If that had worked out he wouldn't be in the conversation. Do not take what I say as a sign of disrespect because I mean none.
Many fans and players have cited we need to get back to playing Miami football. All that really means is we need to get back to winning games. I don’t care if you run the option. I don’t care if you run out of the pistol or if you run out of the shotgun. I don’t care if you run a triple threat. Just win. There is no guarantee that Butch would win. In fact you’d be hard pressed to find a situation where a coach returns to a former school in the same coaching capacity and does better. It just doesn’t happen.
The same thing that doomed Al Golden can easily doom the next regime that takes over if not thought through objectively and thoroughly. The dumbest thing you can ever do as an organization is think you can do it the old way forever. Or that the old way is the only way. That mentality just won’t work. That mentality is what got us into this mess to begin with. It’s the reason we hired Coker and Shannon instead of a respectable coach.
So instead of being lazy this time let’s not be lazy; as a fan base let’s not be lazy. The school has already given indications that they aren’t going to be lazy this time around. There are much better options than there were in 2010 when we were down to the three stooges.
The football landscape pre-BCS and now post-BCS have changed dramatically thanks to Utah, Boise State and UCF. ESPN changed it by airing **** near 90% of the games each weekend in FBS. But going back to the glory days and trying to recreate success the same way just won’t work. It’s the lazy way…..
