My issue is less passive 3rd down D as blitz everybody and leave every WR open on 3rd down.I think the 3 down lineman passive 3rd down defense give people ptsd from dorito defense. (I dont think most even mind a few times just not every dam 3rd down). That and having your best pass rusher covering WR.
Add in 4th and 17 and you can have people dislike you all season..
I don’t care what anybody says, this defense is actually very good. There are certainly some things I’d like them to do a little differently, and it’s not championship caliber like the 2018 defense, but it is a very good defense.

Surprise, surprise, the area where we are struggling the most is in pass defense where we are young and trying to recover from losing 3 franchise guys to the NFL.
Side note: We also need to get off Jarren’s ***. Kid is top 25 in nearly every statistical category, including yards/attempt despite all the *****ing about the deep ball.
The difference between this team being 4-0 and 2-2 is the OL, period. Expect to see Enos use a game plan more similar to the UNC game plan going forward, which was a very well called game.
Edit: Removed S&P+ ranking as that was a 2018 stat. 2019 S&P+ isn’t available yet.
It’s really no different than last year we just had a better secondary and better DTs last year. Kind of important.
Last year Diaz mixed up his 3rd down looks. He used 3 DL and hadbdifferent blitzes with linebackers and safeties. Actually the prior year when we beat Notre Dame he strictly used the 3 DL look in 3rd and long. In 2 of our picks in that game Amari Carter was actually lined up as a 1tech. He also used the 4 DL look last year and had Joe Jackson in a 9tech. That look has been totally removed from out repertoire. We spyed more with linebackers and safeties as opposed to spying with the DL. There was some of it, but not nearly at this level. Would love if @Lance Roffers could break down the differences he is seeing from last year to this year.Just on his performance as a playcaller on 3rd down, Baker sucks dyck. Oh look it's 3rd and long and we're rushing 3 with our best pass rusher dropping into the flat/curl zone. This imbecile has a very deep DE group that excel at rushing the passer and the above is what he routinely calls on 3rd and long. On 3rd down and long we should have Rousseau, Garvin, Hill and Patchan on the field together. Also, Patchan should be inside with Garvin in this look. You could also line Sam Brooks up as a stand up rusher in a 9 tech as Brooks has insane speed and closing burst. Heck you could put Harvey out there as a situational pass rusher. The key is to get our athleticism and speed on the field together and overwhelm the opposing offense in those 3rd and long situations.
Baker has been passive and he has NOT used the talent that he has at his disposal to the best of their abilities. Add to that he is way too unnecessarily cute with the stunts and the delayed corner blitzes from 30 yards out. Baker is a jerk off and don't you think for one second that the players haven't realized that because they have. You can color me reactionary until you're blue in the face but the bottom line here is as follows... Either Baker snaps out of his self inflicted mediocrity and improves significantly or Diaz will have no choice but to can him at the end of the season. Diaz doesn't have the time nor the luxury of sitting back and waiting for Baker to develop as a DC. It's his career on the line and he knows it.
Nice post. I like the way you went into detail and described the different looks and packages we utilized under Diaz. I agree with you that the 3 DL look under Diaz was radically different than what we have seen this year. A great example being that Diaz would supplement the 3 DL look with blitzing Lbs and safeties. This is a huge difference from what Bleak Faker has been showing.Last year Diaz mixed up his 3rd down looks. He used 3 DL and hadbdifferent blitzes with linebackers and safeties. Thanks. Hard to find the time to watch old games to see it all. We seem to be using a lot more zone this year too. We need one of the Xs and Os gurus (@Lance Roffers) to break it down for us. If you have the time, I have not been able to, you can watch our game against LSU and LA Tech's game( Baker DC) against LSU to see how they handled the same team. Something for the serious football junkies lolNice post. I like the way you went into detail and described the different looks and packages we utilized under Diaz.
4th and 17 motha phucka....get off my back!!
4th and 17, lemme call a cb blitz...BRILLIANT
If we’re going to keep bringing this up then we lose the right to ***** about the phantom pass interference call in the Fiesta Bowl.
Bro, Jarren will be gone before we have any decent OL. Welcome to the eternal cycle of canes mediocrity.Give Jarren a veteran oline and he's deadly. It's just going to take time, juco, high school recruiting and the portal. Team lacks quality depth
Like most of our fan base we are still upset about that call. We also forget that we gave up a 4th and I believe 12, which set up they play. Can care less about a phantom call in the fiesta bowl from yesteryear....im all about this staph and right now!
