Some stats to help us ID just how close or how far we are from the championship game:
Red Zone Defense
Alabama: 13th (.733)
Georgia: 34th (.800)
Miami: 105th (.881)
'16 Miami: .789
The skinny: The disparity between Miami and the title game teams in keeping teams off the scoreboard in this red zone is stunning. It also tells much of the story of why those teams are playing in Atlanta.
**************
Rushing Defense
Alabama: 1st (91.8 yards per game)
Georgia: 20th (121.9)
Miami: 43rd (145.8)
'16 Miami: 142.3
The skinny: The front seven was the heart of the Miami defense and it should be even better next season.
****************
Rushing Offense
Alabama: 10th (255.8 yards)
Georgia: 8th (267.4)
Miami: 71st (160.8)
The skinny: The injury to Mark Walton definitely hurt the Canes in this area.
****************
Scoring Defense
Alabama: 1st (11.1 points per game)
Georgia: 5th (15.7)
Miami: 28th (21.0)
'16 Miami: 19.8
The skinny: Miami's numbers were not bad. But you are seeing here what it takes to be elite.
*******************
3rd Down Conversion Pct Offense
Alabama: 45th, .421
Georgia: 9th, .460
Miami: 125th .288
The skinny: It's amazing Miami won 10 games performing this poorly on third down. It's also probably a glaring statement as to why the quarterback competition will be open in spring and fall practice. Malik Rosier, while hardly worthy of taking sole blame, simply didn't come through enough in these critical situations.
*******************
Scoring Offense
Alabama: 12th (37.9 points)
Georgia: 17th (36.3)
Miami: 59th (29.1)
The skinny: As you can see, Georgia and Alabama could score points while keeping opponent averages considerably lower. It's no secret why they are still standing.
******************
Team Sacks
Alabama: 22nd (2.77)
Georgia: 54th (2.21)
Miami: 1st (3.38)
'16 Miami: 2.8
The skinny: Miami got after the quarterback at a championship level.
***************
Time of Possession
Alabama: 67th
Georgia: 19th
Miami: 123rd (26 minutes per game)
The skinny: Miami repeatedly lost this battle and it's tough to win when the other team has the ball the majority of the time. The Canes did a good job overcoming this deficiency.
*******************
Total Defense
Alabama: 1st (252.4 yards per game)
Georgia: 6th (289.5)
Miami: 38th (362.8)
'16 Miami 359.2
The skinny: Defense wins championships and Alabama and Georgia were two of the best statistically.
*****************
Passing Defense
Alabama: 5th (169.5)
Georgia: 2nd (163.1)
Miami: 50th (216.1)
'16 Miami (217.0)
I added our 2016 defensive stats to show my disappointment in our defense this year. How did we take a step backwards defensively playing less competition?
I'm sure your thinking what why does being worse by 3 yards make a difference? It because we played far, FAR more superior offenses last year then we did this year and we performed worse this year.
QB leading their offense '16 vs '17.
----------------------------
Trubisky - #1 Draft Pick
Francois - FSU Starter
Evans - VT - 29/8 TD-Int 63%
Kizer - 2nd Round Pick
Peterman - Drafted
Benkurt
Finley - Who will be drafted this year.
Jones
Howard
vs
Blackman - true freshman
Jones
Dungy - overrated as ****
Benkurt
Wimbush
Woodside
Some true freshman for Pitt
Kelly
Hornibrooke
Then you add in the fact that:
- FSU had Cook and Francois.
- UNC was loaded offensively. Hood, Logan, Switzer, Howard, and Proehl who did not play vs us this year because of injury.
- UVa had Manziel who I think set the receiving record for UVa vs us last year.
- VT was also loaded offensively with Ford, Hodges, Phillips, and Rogers.
- ND also had Tory Hunter who had more catches then ND's leading WR this year.
- WVU and Pitt had top 10 offenses if I'm not mistaken.
- It was the FIRST year in the system.
- Our entire front 7 was back and we had 3 DBs who played a good bit in '16 (Johnson, Redwine, and Young)
This is why I'm bugging about the defense this year. We took a step back playing lesser talent as a whole. Other then FSU and Clemson no one else had equal talent to us IMO.
