Some stats to help us ID just how close or how far we are from the championship game:

Red Zone Defense
Alabama: 13th (.733)
Georgia: 34th (.800)
Miami: 105th (.881)
The skinny: The disparity between Miami and the title game teams in keeping teams off the scoreboard in this red zone is stunning. It also tells much of the story of why those teams are playing in Atlanta.

Rushing Defense
Alabama: 1st (91.8 yards per game)
Georgia: 20th (121.9)
Miami: 43rd (145.8)
The skinny: The front seven was the heart of the Miami defense and it should be even better next season.

Rushing Offense
Alabama: 10th (255.8 yards)
Georgia: 8th (267.4)
Miami: 71st (160.8)
The skinny: The injury to Mark Walton definitely hurt the Canes in this area.

Scoring Defense
Alabama: 1st (11.1 points per game)
Georgia: 5th (15.7)
Miami: 28th (21.0)
The skinny: Miami's numbers were not bad. But you are seeing here what it takes to be elite.

3rd Down Conversion Pct Offense
Alabama: 45th, .421
Georgia: 9th, .460
Miami: 125th .288
The skinny: It's amazing Miami won 10 games performing this poorly on third down. It's also probably a glaring statement as to why the quarterback competition will be open in spring and fall practice. Malik Rosier, while hardly worthy of taking sole blame, simply didn't come through enough in these critical situations.

Miami: 59th (29.1)
The skinny: As you can see, Georgia and Alabama could score points while keeping opponent averages considerably lower. It's no secret why they are still standing.

Georgia: 54th (2.21)
Miami: 1st (3.38)
The skinny: Miami got after the quarterback at a championship level.

Alabama: 67th
Georgia: 19th
Miami: 123rd (26 minutes per game)
The skinny: Miami repeatedly lost this battle and it's tough to win when the other team has the ball the majority of the time. The Canes did a good job overcoming this deficiency.

Total Defense
Alabama: 1st (252.4 yards per game)
Georgia: 6th (289.5)
Miami: 38th (362.8)
The skinny: Defense wins championships and Alabama and Georgia were two of the best statistically.

Some would argue the significance of some of these statistics but when we were winning championships we were always near the top in these categories.
 
can we get a break down of how much eSECpn sucking off Saben and the SEC factor into the equation? How about how much non calls have an outcome on who plays/wins in bowls
 
Miami / UGA vs ND
Miami / Bama vs FSU

Can't make a comparison when we play totally different schedules. One could be inflated in comparison to the others.

Great post OP. Love seeing someone put the stats out there. We have to get much better to contend.
3rd Down Conversion Pct., Time of Possession, and Total Defense stick out to me. The first two, my gawd, how did we win 10 games? The third, we have a ways to go, but considering TOP, I would say that is pretty decent.
Overall, a better year than expected, but after ND game, I thought we would run the table. I think the Canes played very respectable.
Come on 2018 Season!!!

You think the Miami team that played those last 3 games has any chance against UGA or Bama in a head to head? GTFOH

3rd down conversion rate is all you need to know. It directly leads to worse TOP, and more possessions for the other team, which obviously means more yards, points, etc. We desperately need a good, consistent QB. We get that and ALL of those stats improve.
 
3rd down offense and TOP has been awful for a while, part of it is obviously the inaccuracy of rosier, but due to the continuous trend it also must have to do with how weak our o line has been.
 
So, we are close. With all these horrible stats we still only lost one game - just like Bama, uga,Clemson and ou. Couple more big time players and quality depth and we are much closer than it looks.
 
Our biggest weakness was QB, then back 7 play. The elite teams had better QBs and better back 7 play.
Unlike the doom and gloomers, I think our D gets better this year, despite the uncertainty and quality/experience depth at DT.
Mainly because I expect better QB play to have the defense on field less...and the back 7 to be improved via experience and young talent infusion, even if we stagnate up front.
 
Keep reminding yourselves UM was without Walton, Herndon, and Richards. Not even Bama or Clemson could overcome that. UM isn’t all the way back and we knew that. This was a dream season that came a year early. Relax people.

And just to help me understand....where exactly did I say this? Reading comprehension is seriousley lacking for many on this board
