We are not close to elite

UCF whooped Auburn, so what is elite? Great coaching can get you elite results, but in order to get those results without elite talent across the board, you need elite QB play to elevate the team. We certainly don't have that yet. My hope is that one of the new QBs can be that elite talent to help us bridge the gap from good to great.

I'm sick of seeing hot and cold QB play, and a coach that obviously doesn't trust his QB to make changes at the line. Someone mentioned we don't see any pre snap movement. I think it's because of our QB situation. Keep it simple, stupid. That should change when we get a better QB.

Remember, back in 2000-2002, teams we played often said they knew what 2-3 plays we'd run out of a formation, but they couldn't stop us. Why? Because our smart QB always picked the right play, depending on what the D was giving, and our talent more often than not executed the play to perfection. We are behind the 8 ball with a QB that is so limited. It's a miracle we won 10 games. Would have been 11.

I think we will be improved next year, and maybe drastically. IF one of the new QBs can come in and take control, we will roll back into the ACC title game. If it's Rosier, I expect worse results than this year. Teams finally figured out that he wasn't going to beat them for 4 quarters, so they adjusted. That will carry over into next season, and no one we play will fear his deep ball. That will make it impossible to run, again. Losing to Wisconsin might be a blessing in disguise, because beating them would have been like finding a pound of fools gold.

Here's to a good old fashioned QB battle. May the best man win. Please God let it be someone new.

Georgia was 8-5 last year. Miami just needs to keep moving in this direction.

I don't see a talent gap with Georgia. They just have a better QB and a solid identity on offense.

The last two seasons worth of recruiting classes has given Georgia more of an advantage in talent then you can see at this point. Its also going to grow.

Richt is playing with Malik which is a huge obstacle regardless, Diaz on the other hand doesn’t have many liabilities yet allows below average qbs to carve us up

Thing is, our CBs often had great position, but didn't get their heads around, or arms up. Here's hoping those passes that are barely missing our player's shoulders will hit the taller CBs we have coming in on the helmets. Lord knows if the technique doesn't improve we will need it.

Anyone who truly understands football already knew that Miami is a to 15 team. We are not elite and it’s obvious when you watch/compare to other teams. We are heading in the right direction coming off two terrible coaching hires and probation. Anyone who thought we were elite, were lying to themselves. We have glaring weaknesses in some areas, especially depth. Richt is two more classes away from competing with the big boys, so temper yourselves and just enjoy the ride.

The people who think we are elite are the ones that only watch our team play and so overate every player on our team.

We have more talent than Wisconsin and Pitt. Being "elite" is not the problem it's too many periods of inconsistency

We do have more talent than Wisconsin and Pitt......the problem was, those two teams had better offensive lines, which led to very average QBs being able to play easy pitch and catch. Of course, those average QBs were likely better than our QB, too, but that's beside the point. Being stronger up front is an equalizer for teams like that. Our speed isn't going to help us if we can't get to the QB, or stuff the run.

I also agree that we don't have anywhere near enough talent compared to the top teams. We are doing better than we have in many previous years, but it's not there yet. Also, it was obviously a massive problem that we lost our top 3 best, most talented players on offense. Maybe Alabama and Clemson can afford to have that happen to them, but at this point in time, we can't. Speaking of which, it is time for me to eat some crow, because back when Walton got injured, I said that Homer is just as good and that there will be no dropoff. I was clearly wrong on that.

Lol Clemson only wins with 5 players offensively.... their qb Kelly Bryant, their all purpose star Ray Ray McCloud, WE Deon Cain, RB Travis Etienne, and some times wr Hunter Renfrow.

You act like Clemsom has this rolodex of athletes they're beating teams with every weekend?? We have just as much talent if not more the only difference is they have a star QB and we don't. So we are already their just need to find a star QB fill in some wholes, continue to develop and if Coach Richts program is elite we will be able to win those games real soon.

I'm not worried about being far behind physically. We'll get the kids. Richt can recruit.

My concern is will we be able to out-coach anybody once we get the kids?

What I saw this season leads me to believe it's a NO. And that's a major concern. We can't just out-talent everybody on our way to a National Championship. Too many well-coached teams in the way.

That Wisonsin game was a big letdown for me. The Pitt game sucked, but I chalked it up to being a trap. And truthfully, Rosier basically lost us that game. The Clemson game I anticipated. But the Wisky game? I thought maybe they would push us around a bit, but I did not anticipate them carving us up in the air and completely out-coaching us.
There really is no reason for that to happen. They do not have the players we do. They have SIX 4/5 star players on their squad. We have 25.
Re-watching the game made it even worse. I replayed and dissected almost every play from our defense. I looked at our alignments, techniques, etc. Then I compared it to what Wisconsin was doing on defense with inferior players. It was night and day. Everything they did just made more sense and was more sound, hence the reason their defense forced more contested throws. It was very disheartening.

Watching the inside/middle/intermediate section of our defense gets chewed up by a mediocre QB and a bunch of low rated WR's was extremely frustrating, especially when a lot of it stemmed from alignment and/or technique. (i.e. why is a DB lined-up outside of a WR and giving away the inside?)

Wisconsin wasn't doing anything special either, yet we still couldn't stop it. When they needed a 1st down they simply ran a WR bender right behind our LB's for an easy completion. LB starring at the QB and not getting depth + the Safety 15 yards off the WR = stealing for a garbage *** QB

When I see us constantly make inferior players look good, why would I believe that we could EVER stop superior players at programs like Clemson?
^^^^^All of this. Elite coaches hide their weaknesses and put their playmakers in position to make plays. Who would have thought that Mike Harley and Jeff Thomas’ best trait this year would be their blocking talent? Harley not one TD for the year? Turnover to points ratio that might be near last in D1? Miami hasn’t been able to get off the field on third down and allowed multiple teams to go on career completion streaks...yet that’s all on the DBs? That’s just Malik?

UCF proved that the game is chess - you gotta have your players in the right place. That’s coaching. Miami didn’t need any more talent or depth to be 12-1.

Miami should have still beaten Pitt and Wisconsin had a better Malik showed up and nothing else changed. But with a better Richt and Diaz Miami might still be playing.

I said the SAME EXACT THING in another thread. When Richt got the job I thought we were getting those SEC coaches. Nope. We hired a lot of rejects journey men. I also said we're getting championship level coaching from only 3 areas: DL, RB, and WR. Everyone else has been mediocre.. from the S&C program to the play calling on offense and defense. I don't understand why we never seem to get coaches who make simple things simple. There is always a weird quirk.. They make simple things seem difficult. While other coaches make simple thing simple. It ALWAYS something with this team through the years... either the scheme is trash, the techniques are trash, development trash, S&C program trash, or if the coaches can really coach then they can't recruit.

This is why I was big on bringing back Davis. Dude has a knack for finding quality coaches (for cheap) who can recruit and has an eye for talent that no one else sees.

Maybe not when our best 3 guys on O are healthy.. but depth wise it's not even close. We need several more elite classes. Coaching staff isn't good enough to win with less IMO. Let's all hope Perry is for real.

Wtf are you talking about? We won 10 games with Malik Rosier at QB, no mark Walton, no Ahmon Richards, no back up running back, no back up TE, a corner playing safety and Robert Knowles as a primary back up. That is called winning with less.

Good QB play would do wonders for us. If Perry is the goods like some say we will make major leaps next year.

Not unless there's a MAJOR DRASTIC improvement in the offensive line! Wisconsin's front seven molested Miami's O-line on Saturday night!

For example, Miami has 3rd and 2 in Wisconsin territory, and Richt PASSES for the third-down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm beginning to believe Diaz is OVERRATED as a defensive coordinator! hUh. Because with the exception of the turnovers and TFL. The defense REGRESSED from the 2016 season. Just check out the final defensive statistics of the 2017 campaign and what not.

I call it poor roster management.. with a little bad luck mixed in. Richt has nobody to blame but himself for Malik starting. Same with whiffing at RB last year. We still out talent everyone on our schedule (minus FSU).

We won 10 games bc we played a cake schedule.

You do realize that this is year two, right? We beat FSU, VTech, Notre Dame when they were ranked third in the country. We should have beat Wisconsin and Pitt, but this staff worked miracles with what we had coming back in the secondary and at QB.

We should have beat Wisconsin and Pitt

In what world should we have beat those two teams? Both beat us by double digits. If anything we should have lost to GT & FSU for another 8-5 season. I am fine with the end result but I stand by my comments on this staff. We get out coached week in and week out. They do tend to make good halftime adjustments but it shouldn't come to that.

Our coordinators and game plans are sub par IMO.

Please read. We need more elite players. We don’t have enough to compete with the top teams. Also, coaching does have a part in all of this but at the end of the days it’s still about who has the most horses in the stable. The champ will be one of these 10 teams | The 2017 college football season preview

Good info Beast.

It didn't take 7 hours of CFB to realize we are not elite.

UGA's been averaging a top 6 class over the past 4 years.
Bama is #1 .

We're 18+.
Only 33% of our recruits have been 4-star or better.

For '18, 70% of our players will be 4 star, or better.
That will increase in a few weeks.

Consistent recruiting like that puts us up there with the big boys.

So, the fabled Turnover Chain actually hurt us. Trash that thing!
