There are bound to be other early rankings out there. So if anybody finds them, feel free to add them.

4. Miami

I thought Miami was a little early this year to the party. This is the year I thought they were going to be really, really good (in 2018). A year too soon to get too excited, but they learned how to win big games and I think they could make a Playoff run next season.

The Hurricanes are a program on the rise under coach Mark Richt. Miami was perhaps a year ahead of schedule by pushing for a CFB Playoff berth in 2017, but this team will be squarely in the mix for the top four in 2018. The Hurricanes open the year with an intriguing matchup against LSU in Arlington and host Florida State in their annual rivalry showdown. A road trip to Virginia Tech is the toughest away matchup, but the rest of the 2018 slate is manageable. Quarterback Malik Rosier threw for 3,120 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushed for 468 yards and five scores, but the senior will be pushed for the starting job by redshirt freshman N’Kosi Perry. With Mark Walton moving onto the NFL, true freshman Lorenzo Lingard and junior Travis Homer are set to anchor the ground game. The receiving corps loses Braxton Berrios and tight end Christopher Herndon, but Ahmmon Richards will return to full strength after a season-ending injury, and the Hurricanes will get bigger contributions from 2017 freshmen Jeff Thomas and Mike Harley. Richt will have a little work to do in the trenches after the departure of left tackle Kc McDermott and guard Trevor Darling. Manny Diaz has built one of the ACC’s top defenses over the last two years, and this unit should be even better than its 2017 version. Ends Chad Thomas and Trent Harris, tackle Anthony Moten and cornerback Dee Delaney are the only seniors departing from the defensive depth chart from the Orange Bowl. The linebacker unit returns all three starters, including Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney. Safety Jaquan Johnson (assuming he doesn’t leave for the NFL) and cornerbacks Michael Jackson, Trajan Bandy and Malek Young round out a strong secondary.

7. MIAMI HURRICANES

Mark Richt and the Hurricanes arrived earlier than expected this year and — despite three losses to end the season — should be back in ACC contention with Malik Rosier and a core that includes running back Travis Homer and cornerback Malek Young. Miami's nonconference schedule features a monster opener against LSU at Jerry World and a road trip to Toledo.

NO. 4 MIAMI

WHY? The Hurricanes seemed poised for a breakout 2018 campaign, then returned to the national stage ahead of projections before crashing and burning in losing its last three games. With 2018 on the horizon, a significant amount of talent returns to a Mark Richt-led squad that played in its first-ever ACC championship game.
WHY NOT? Richt brought with him to South Beach what pushed him out of Athens: a penchant for building good teams, but teams not quite good enough to contend with the best the conference has to offer. A neutral-field game against LSU in the opener should be a good gauge for where The U stands moving forward.

Could Miami be even better in 2018? Malik Rosier is back for a second season as a starter and Travis Homer will return as the No. 1 running back following Mark Walton’s departure to the NFL. The Hurricanes offense should improve, especially after the injuries that plagued the team at the end of the season. DBs Michael Jackson and Jaquan Johnson returning for their senior seasons is big for a defense that had just one senior starter in 2017. The turnover chain will be seen a lot again in 2018.

9. Miami (Fla.)

Never mind a three-game losing streak to finish the season. Mark Richt is just getting started. The core of an entertaining offense returns. Manny Diaz's defense might even be better. The Canes should be ACC and possibly playoff contenders again.

USA Today
9. Miami (Fla.) (2017 record: 10-3)

Miami is still not quite ready to be included among the best of the best, though the program is making obvious progress. It probably will take another recruiting class or two to get this roster’s talent level on par with a Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State or Georgia, but that time is coming. For 2018, look for the Hurricanes to compete for an ACC crown and take another step toward knocking Clemson off the top of the heap.

Rivals (Mike Farrell)
6. Miami:

The Hurricanes flopped down the stretch and I worry about the quarterback play, but the defense is going to be downright nasty and they are adding more offensive playmakers. The ACC isn’t very tough next season and they could take it a step further and approach a playoff berth or at least give Clemson a better title game.

247Sports (Chris Hummer)
No. 6 Miami:

The Hurricanes were ahead of schedule for most of 2017, but their 2018 roster should put them in position to avoid another late-season fade. Most of the offense, led by quarterback Malik Rosier, returns. The same can be said on defense, where Chad Thomas is the only major departure. If the Hurricanes can survive a difficult non-conference slate – vs. LSU and at Toledo – they’re set up for a national title run.

Outlook: In Mark Richt's second season back at his alma mater, the Hurricanes returned to national relevance with their first 10-win season since 2003, introduced us to the Turnover Chain and played in the ACC championship game for the first time. However, their three-game losing streak to close the season showed that the "U" isn't yet all the way back.

If Miami is going to be better in 2018, quarterback Malik Rosier will have to avoid the mistakes and turnovers that plagued him in his first season as a starter. Wide receiver Berrios and two starting offensive linemen will be missed. Sophomore Ahmmon Richards might be Miami's next star if he recovers from a knee injury.

Richt and his staff will have to continue to build depth through recruiting to catch Clemson in the ACC. They're off to a great start in doing so.

5. Miami

Mark Richt won 10 games yet again in 2017. On cue, the Hurricanes closed the season with three consecutive losses. But it marked the first time Miami won 10 football games since 2003. QB Malik Rosier (3,120 passing yards, 468 rushing yards, 31 total TDs) returns. The schedule includes some tough games (LSU, Florida State, Virginia Tech). But much of the confidence in this team stems from the defense built by Manny Diaz — the same group that inspired the hated turnover chain. Defensive back Jaquan Johnson (team-best 96 total tackles, 4 interceptions) announced in December he will be back next season, and the majority of the unit remains intact.

Land Of Ten
5. Miami (10-3)

Miami slumped with three losses to end the season, but the Hurricanes returned to prominence with a 10-0 start and No. 2 ranking with coach Mark Richt. QB Malik Rosier is back, but much of the confidence is thanks to the defense. DB Jaquan Johnson (team-best 96 total tackles, 4 interceptions) announced in December he will be back next season. The linebackers group also returns Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney.

6 Miami Hurricanes (10-3)

Key returners: QB Malik Rosier, RB Travis Homer, LB Shaquille Quarterman, CB Malek Young
Miami's rise to national prominence in 2017 was stunning because of how young the team was. Virtually everyone - with a few exceptions - will be back as the Canes try to improve upon their 10-win campaign in 2017. They'll also be bolstered by a top recruiting class.

8. Miami (10-3)

Miami broke through with a young team this season. The 2018 ’Canes could return 16 starters, including several key defenders — S Jaquan Johnson, LBs Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney — who accounted for 27 of their 31 Turnover Chain moments. RB Travis Homer, WR Ahmmon Richards and three O-line starters return. So does QB Malik Rosier, but he may have to fend off touted freshman N’Kosi Perry.

Sportsday Dallas News
6. Miami

The young Hurricanes managed to be in the CFP conversation for most of 2017 despite being decimated by injuries. Next year's team should considerably healthier and more experienced, and should be the early favorites in the ACC Coastal division.

Looks like we are a unanimous top 10 team. I hope our guys come with that dog in them, cuz they need to play like the favorites and not like a team on the rise. That mentality is the difference in big programs.

It all depends on QB play. We'll sink like a stone if Rosier is the best of a bad bunch again. Here's hoping someone raises their level of play. ****, here's hoping they ALL do.

100%. Next year we need to know how to dominate everyone. We cant play down to people because what we think we are playing down to, wont be the level they give us. We will be taking everyone's best shot and we have to approach all games like that.

Yeah really. That lack of knowledge irks me even more now that there's a playoff committee. They aren't supposed to use outside rankings. But one of the committee members was a sportswriter for USA Today for 30 years. He knows most of the AP voters. Hard to believe he doesn't use the AP poll in his rankings. And like you pointed out, Yahoo is totally unaware of our QB situation. Makes you wonder if voters know anything about the teams outside of their geographical location.

Averages out to a 6th/7th ranking.

Get this to those last 5 or 6 recruits that are at the top of our list.

Without the benefit of knowing other top teams rosters as well as ours, I think somewhere in the 7-10 range is where we should be ranked.

I am going to say the loss of our DTs is mitigated by an assumed QB upgrade, basically making those spots break even. At every other position group, save the OL, we are a top 10 team. But, truth be told, our OL is probably better than any team outside the top 10.

Bama, OSU, Clemson is your top tier. That PSU, Wisc, Wash, Okla, Mich, Miami group is the second tier, and really it doesn't matter where they are ranked at this point. No one would be surprised if the pre-season No. 8 team was at the top of the rankings late in the season.
