Watching early commitments is fun... but only commitments from around now forward will become more predictive of those will will sign for 2021.
If you look at the players we signed in 2020, there were only 2 commitments* (that never decommitted) who were committed before this time last year: Dominick Mammarelli (3/31/18) and Don Chaney, Jr. (2/3/19)
It took until 4/29/19 to start getting unwavering commitments who turned into signers, beginning with Tyler Van Dyke.
I still watch the "too early" commitments. It's enjoyable. But it isn't very prognosticative.
That said, I personally think taking early commitments is not an awful strategy. It helped lead to Mammarelli having some theoretical momentum to join, and eventually led to the eventual return of Avantae Williams (originally 2/2/17) and Elijah Roberts (6/9/18).
*Note: Willie Moise (3/1/18) would/will be a third "unwavering" success story, but, as of yet, he is not signed.
