Sacrificing athletics for what academics?
"In 2011, The U.S. News and World Report rated the University of Miami as the 38th best university in America, placing it higher than ever before. UM’s ranking has fallen 15 spots since then (2018)." - The Miami Hurricane.
Now we are 52nd. Not exactly a trade off.
What is more upsetting is the true reality of what is ruining our school. Management at the top and the mission. We spend a quarter billion a year on research. This is 60 million more than auxiliary expenses which include residence halls, food services, retail stores and athletics. To put it in perspective it doesn't cost the school a dime to run the football program. NOT ONE DIME.
Currently, UM has net assets of 2.34 billion and they are sitting on unrestricted net cash of 270 million. This does not include any restricted funds from donors marked for football or athletics. Not to mention they have now decided to bury research and auxiliary expenses in the Financial Statements as of 2019. The reason...one can only wonder.
In 2006 UM generated 507 million in revenue from patient care and the hospital facility with expenses of 436 million. As of 2019 the revenue is now 2.105 billion and expenses are 1.887 billion. So what have we become? You tell me where the interests lie.
Let me be clear. We have the money to put the program back on the map. To put the right people in place. Yet we chose not to. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Or maybe the fans mission is not the same as those who actually run Miami. Stop feeding the problem and start putting the pressure on them. A comfortable nature is one which never moves.
