Was exodus of Hurricanes’ underclassmen a gaffe?

Rosenhaus said; "It is too early to judge if exodus of Hurricanes’ underclassmen was a gaffe."

Agent Drew Rosenhaus may be gaining on Ozzie Guillen, Jeff Ireland and Nevin Shapiro as the most hated man in South Florida sports — at least when it comes to UM fans.

Rosenhaus appeared on WQAM this morning to explain why UM’s underclassmen – with the exception of third-round pick Olivier Vernon – were selected lower than anyone expected. Defensive tackle Marcus Forston, one of five Hurricanes who declared early for the NFL Draft, wasn’t even chosen and ended up signing as a free agent with the New England Patriots.

Rosenhaus’ explanation? Ain’t my fault! (tell McIntosh and Norton to practice their response for when their agent makes that claim)

”I’m not going to second guess my clients and we’re not going to look back,” Rosenhaus said. “You can’t look back. You can only look forward. When a team drafts a player, you have dozens of people involved…..Ask the teams… how much of a factor an agent has to do with them getting drafted? People can say what they want.”

What people have been saying on Twitter and message boards has not been kind to Rosenhaus. The feeling among UM fans is that Rosenhaus sold UM’s underclassmen a bill of goods that cost the players big money and the Hurricanes a chance to have a good season in 2012.

Tailback Lamar Miller, who ran for 1,272 yards last season and was projected as a first-round pick, fell to the fourth round. Receiver Tommy Streeter, who some analysts saw as a second rounder, was drafted in the sixth round as was guard Brandon Washington. As noted before, Forston wasn’t even selected (I believe he’s the first UM underclassmen to leave school early and not be drafted by an NFL team since fullback Carlo Joseph in 1998.)

“You really can’t judge whether a guy made a good decision or bad decision until you see what kind of career they had,” Rosenhaus said.

“Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers last year went to the Pro Bowl, a 1,000-yard receiver and 1,000-yard return man. What round do you think he was drafted? Sixth round and he came out as an underclassman. Do you think he has any regrets?

“What I said to Tommy Streeter and Brandon Washington is remember what Antonio Brown did (Remember the Alamo!). Go into the league and become a dominant player and no one is going to care where you got drafted (such profound advice).”

What Rosenhaus didn’t address is how much money those underclassmen potentially left on the table by not returning to UM and increasing their value. (Hello McIntosh & Norton are you seeing this?)

Rosenhaus said he “absolutely” advises underclassmen to petition the NFL Draft Advisory Board to get information on their draft status, Except that, according to UM coach Al Golden, none of the departing underclassmen did that.

“You always recommend to your clients that they talk to their college coaches, the advisory committee…and of course their family,” said Rosenhaus, who was not challenged during the interview about why UM’s players didn’t seek the NFL committee’s advice.

“I’m not going to judge whether a guy made a good decision or bad decision until we see if they can become the next Antonio Brown. It’s that simple.” (isn't that special!)

“Whether you’re a first-round pick or undrafted, the draft doesn’t define you (the draft doesn't define you...simply incredible!). Really it’s an indication of what your signing bonus is. But what defines a player is what they do after they’re drafted. When they have an opportunity to get into the NFL, the draft doesn’t matter anymore….”

Despite their public proclamations, most of UM’s underclassmen had to be very disappointed with the result of the draft. Rosenhaus’ advice? Don’t worry, be happy.(After the upcoming draft be sure to tell McIntosh and Norton..."Don't worry, be happy!)

“One thing I tell my clients, whether they’re a first-round pick or not drafted is, ‘Hey, keep your chin up because it’s going to be you’re play on the field that determines you’re success, not where you are drafted,’” Rosenhaus said (this is the type of sage advice being offered McIntosh and Norton...if these players don't pan out their agent won't even remember their names, although the commissions they made off those kids will help fatten their already obese wallets).

History has an ugly way of repeating itself! Learn from your mistakes...or the mistakes of others...or be prepared to suffer the same fate.

Seems like we're always getting hit harder then other schools with underclassmen leaving early, especially ones with shaky prospects. If you are guaranteed to be drafted round 1-2(Njoku last year) then by all means, bounce but when you can legitimately help yourself and your team by returning, then you need to do that.

This is a trend that needs to stop for us to get back to where we need to be but what do you do? You know Coach Richt and co. have done their best to educate these players. I really think they just have their mind made up that they are leaving after year 3 to chase that paper regardless of where they may or may not be drafted. Just seems shortsighted.

Even the highe projected guys we need to keep. The great teams keep their guys and it wins them championships. Without chub and Michel UGA is not playing and both would have been high draft pics.

Any kid who thinks an agent is looking out for them is crazy. Draft is crap shoot. Agent is allowed to represent as many players as he can. If teams hand unlimited draft picks they would draft everyone because it is a crap shoot. Agent just wants to throw crap against the wall and see what sticks. What Drew is saying is, “I don’t care what happens to the losers, I only want to make sure I end up with a couple of the winners.”

Well they paid a lot to get them and probable paid a bunch to keep them. That is the Bama/sec way.

Truly a perplexing problem. The most disturbing part of this trend is the kids are making decisions that are easily proven to be counter productive based on other examples, one as recently as last year.

McIntosh and Norton having another year with Coach Kul, the strength and conditioning program, playing against top-flight competition and the natural maturation process would most likely see both of them selected within the 2019 first or second round.

I honestly don't think it's that perplexing. Playing and going to school in Miami is both a blessing and a curse. Miami has one of the highest wealth gaps in the nation. It is also a very visual city - people like to show off their wealth and seeing it makes you want it. These kids are surrounded by wealth - yachts on the bay, multi-million dollar mansion within walking distance of campus, lots of fellow students driving Mazarati's/Mercedes, 5-star /restaurants/hotels all around.

I went to UM as a middle-class kid from central Florida. I was blown away at the wealth in the area and it's human nature to want to be a part of that. Now imagine some of these kids come from nothing, go to Miami and see the wealth on/around campus, and then have even the SLIGHTEST chance of getting a piece of the pie. Are they thinking about a long term plan? No, but who is at 20-21 years of age?

Every adult on this board knows Mc and Norton should return. The problem is kids make dumb decisions. If they both got a 1st or 2nd round estimate, I could see leaving. Otherwise, stay, get better, and enjoy college. You only get to do college once in your life.

LOL...look, as a College coach at a big time program, you have 3 years to get the most out of these kids and rack up wins and then reload again.

$h!t or get off the pot!

Your point is well taken. Yet, the University of Miami has some very smart and experienced people from both the financial and psychological worlds who should be able to paint a picture that would resonate with kids blinded by their surroundings. I think it is more than the wealth they are seeing. Whatever the problem, a solution must be implemented for the benefit of the kids and the team.

UM is basically Rosenhaus' farm system. Not smart to bite the hand that feeds you. Im all in for leaving early if you are a lock to be a 1st or second round pick, but Rosenhaus convincing marginal NFL players to leave early is foolish and will ultimately come back to hurt him.

I'm james Jackson brother because some of us don't feel like wading through all of the comments in the other thread to get to this comment, which contains new information. This thread specifically addresses Drew Rosenhaus' handling of some of our previous players who left early.

I strongly agree with what Gatorhater said at 8:00 AM.

Wish I could upvote this 100 times. Perception is reality.

Mark Walton will be the next to jump ship and get drafted later than he thinks he should, and later than he would if he waited another year. Our two DT's should wait another year as well, but no one wants to wait for something another year away.

Best position to get drafted for your career is late 1st round and the worst is early 1st round or early second round because you are being drafted by a notoriously bad franchise

I endorse any thread that exposes Rosenhaus and his history of obvious outright lies to Miami underclassmen. Thank you, OP.

(And this doesn't even touch on his scumbaggery with some Canes AFTER a kid actually makes it to the NFL too.)

Knowing Nick Chubb’s family that is about a dumb a post you could make.

Yeah, Chubbs got bread, they literally have their own town.

What if they come back & get seriously injured, then what?
