Moon got paid to unretire #1.
I feel like numbers should be "retired" for no more than 25-30 years. At that point it's been a generation or two after the original player is gone and it's time to allow another player to craft their legacy
I think retiring numbers is short sighted and unnecessary.
I believe a ring of honor around every NFL stadium for their HOF’ers is enough.
I guess I’m old fashioned but I liked it when star QB’s were all #11, 12 or 13 , great RB’s were generally 32-39 and WR’s were 80-89.
Money well spent. Happy QB & that #1 jersey will more than pay for itself before the season even kicks off.Moon got paid to unretire #1.
Pretty much all retired jerseys have a time limit. I don't see anything staying on forever.
Maybe they should just standardize a decade or a couple of years or something. It doesn't shrink the honor it's just there's many years and generations to go.
I agree with you.Well you’re quite as old school as you think my guy. Flaherty who I mentioned earlier was a TE and he wore #1. He stopped playing in the 1930’s. Frank Gifford who was a Safety and RB played in the 1950’s and he wore #16. Numbers were all over the place back in the day.
I knew what you meant but but I just want to point out that the NFL hadn’t always been stringent about the whole jersey numbers thing like many believe.
Cane and Raiders C Jim Otto wore '00'?II remember Ken Burrough with the Oilers wearing 00 until 1981. I think he was the only player in the 70’s with that number. I always thought that was a cool number and since he was drafted in 1970, he was probably the last player to wear it.
Good point. I wonder if the Ravens are beholden to the retired former Browns retired numbers? He never wore a Titans jersey so shouldn’t have been that hard.
Yes, he would have been grandfathered, so that makes 2 players that played in the 70’s with double 00.Cane and Raiders C Jim Otto wore '00'?I
I think he retired after the 1974 or 1975 season though.
