I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I understand he wanted to avoid injury to protect his NFL status. But on the other hand, you join the team to play and compete. It’s a team sport, and you put the team ahead of yourself.

I’m sure some of you are thinking, especially after reading the article, that he needs to provide for his child and younger sibling. I agree; but the NFL is no guarantee. He can also finish his degree and find a career that would also provide for his family, with more certainty than the NFL.

Again, I am truly torn as to whether I agree with his desire for self-preservation or see that move as self-centered. I’m curious to see where others fall on this issue.

Don’t see an issue. Not sure how he would have been placed in the rotation. Wouldn’t have been smart to just make room for him at the expense of your other players. He played his part as emotional support for the team. Great Cane. Even better person, let’s move on.
 
He’s not even 100% now, I have no problem with it.

When golden boy Christian McAffrey sat out the Stanford bowl game when he was perfectly healthy and a much more integral part of his offense, there should have been a lot more outrage than what I saw.

Walton left it all on the field in 2017, his absence didn’t affect the game and his contributions so soon after injury/surgery would not have been significant.

I’ll fight anybody that doesn’t agree with this.

Kid was a fūcking warrior his whole time as a cane.

For one game that was not even a championship game?

Would you support his family if he got seriously injured in that one game? No the NFL is no guarantee but one thing is guaranteed this year and that is that he will be making at least a six figure salary minimum.

He’s gotta do what he’s gotta do and his family comes first.
 
This whole sitting out thing originated around Clowney after his sophomore year. Im not a fan. You could get hurt slipping off a sidewalk curb. Also the school could take out insurance policies.

At the end of the day some kids are just here for the money and they are going to do whatever they think is best.

It will be interesting to see where guys like walton, norton, and mac land and what rounds. We have an endless list of guys that leave early that could of benefited by staying another year.
 
There’s a big difference between someone like Mcaffrey and Walton. Walton’s not at 100% yet, maybe close...and he sure wasn’t a couple of months ago. He also played hurt all year and was a special teams monsters.

Only porsting punks would criticize a warrior like Walton for this.

I have no problem with him sitting his life his choice. The kid was smart not to play IMO. Me personally I couldn't sit, just not in my nature. I'm an old **** now, been injure with a knee since I was 17, just couldn't stop competing. Just had a second shoulder surgery in Jan, the day I'm cleared I'll be at the Gym. I'll be lifting again even though the doctor said stop. I told him that's not going to happen, I'll be back. LMAO
 
Unless he could have played QB or CB his playing in that game made no difference.

Now if he could play CB and look for the ball then he should have had his *** out there😂

Its an easy choice. Do what's best for YOU and your family... just like everyone else should do.

Never understood why some people would get upset when a player decide to leave college early or a Coach to leave. Its the players choice to make, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't... but its their life and their choice to make. The only self centeredness or selfishness I see is anyone asking a player to place themselves and their family future at additional risk just so that they can be further entertained.

As for owing your teammates, coaches, the University, or its fans anything further, I feel this way. He just owed them his best efforts up to the point that an opportunity for $$$ arose. He gave that.

You must be joking, right? Young man's mother passes away...guy has a new born baby girl to support...and you really think playing in a bowl game that isn't a championship was in the young man's best interest? Especially coming off of a significant injury? C'mon man, be better...
 
Stupid take. He was just coming back from injury that kept him out over half the season. It would have been stupid to return for the Bowl game after already declaring.

Coming back when he should have rested was the whole reason he was out for the season in the first place. Him not playing doesn’t mean it wasn’t the best move for both parties.

If I remember correctly, he declared he was going Pro and signed with an agent before the OB, which made him ineligible to play?

Self preservation and self centeredness are kind of linked.
