Miami is the 3rd best team in the conference right now. Good thing for them is they don’t play the top 2 teams.

ND is going to get ugly. Miami can hopefully finish 10-2 and win the conference to make the playoffs.

1-0 each week
I dont see us beating ND, Clemson and Pitt will be tough, FSU won't be a gimme either. This defense and OL, 9-3 win team

Have you watched Clemson play?
I think I agree with you about that **** school in tally, but ND is end of the year. We should be a different team by then

- Those two drives hit on all our biggest issues. The interior struggled all night. SJ Alofaituli is getting some deserved heat, but Max Buchanan and Ryan Rodriguez had rough moments as well. Some of that is poor communication that can improve. But my real concern is how all three look on the field at the same time. None of them are Anez Cooper or Matt McCoy in terms of size and power. We just aren't firm enough there. Jackson Cantwell and Ben Congdon got a ton of first-team reps in camp, and Mirabal needs to keep pushing buttons to get them ready.

If this is SJ's best level…It's alarming that at guard he is ahead of Cantwell, Congdon, Merrieweather, Wilkerson, Hawkes as tackles so that McCoy move back inside. Even if some of the above are frosh, I understand the experience issues but if all 5 can't come up with something better than that to slide McCoy back to guard ouch.

.

Another thing that came up in that sequence was lack of discipline. We had 75 penalty yards overall on the night. That would've put us 135th in the country last year as an average. Several of those penalties were critical in shifting momentum. We can't let that become a trend.

We still got the better of the whistle overall…. Wake had a **** ton.

The last thing is injuries. Mensah's injury seemed minor, but those minor injuries added up. It makes a difference when you lose 2/3 of the best trio in America. Marty Brown's injury is a heartbreaker and puts a damper on everything.

Marty Brown's a tough loss, looked like he added some burst this year too.

- Quiet day for the receivers aside from Mali. It's alarming how much the offense stalled when he went out. We need multiple guys who can punish man coverage.

Well I'm not sure they were given a chance. We decided to throw wide receiver screens umpteen plays in a row.

en Wake Forest got down big and had to pass. Wilson made some mental mistakes, but was hugely impactful in getting a sack, forcing a safety and causing a turnover on downs. Marquise Lightfoot also had a good day. Ahmad Moten (dealing with injury) and Justin Scott haven't broken through yet, but they helped limit Wake to 22 yards rushing. I want to see more from Keona Davis and Jarquez Carter after the flashes they showed in camp. But we should also remember how Moten and Scott progressed throughout last season. Still early.

Scott and Moten are fine. Moten just gets nicked up ALOT. In general I don't understand how a team with some our physical beasts gets so beat up vs. bad teams. Bad luck I guess. Lightfoot is a stud out there.

- We know the deal at linebacker. We're big and old, and teams are going to target Toure and Chase Smith in coverage. I liked seeing Ezekiel Marcelin early, and Kamal Bonner got some high-leverage snaps at the end of the game.

Toure and Smith shouldn't be on the field together, arguably at all against anything other a power running team, and definitely not when the other team is in pass happy mode.

- There were a few bright spots in the secondary. Bryce Fitzgerald showed his ability to diagnose and was very physical. He's still learning at corner, but I expect his ball skills to show up as he gets more comfortable. Ethan O'Connor made a huge play which should boost his confidence. JJ Dunnigan played every defensive snap and did so at 100 MPH. He's going to be amazing.

I thought there was good and bad in the secondary. O'Connor is solid in my book… Always has very good coverage and technically sound. Charlie Beckers don't grow on trees and the 1st rounder to 1st rounder connections vs. Indy give him a bit of bad rep, but he had coverage there, he can play. Glad to see him finally hold to a pick.

However, it's clear Hetherman is still trying to protect the DBs. If we're going to play with so much cushion, the defensive backs need to do a better job communicating. There were several costly breakdowns, including the touchdown described above. Damari Brown still looks a little injured to me, and he's not playing with a ton of confidence. He's already a bigger guy at 200+ pounds, so playing slower hurts him even more. He did make a nice TFL, though. Thornton is a menace going downhill, but teams are going to keep challenging him like Wake did with Hernandez. I've seen Thornton cover Mali in practice, and while he's never going to be lockdown, I think there's more there than he showed on that play.

Brown has taken a step back and was a mixed bag to begin with. You talked about him being a bigger guy, well wasn't who shut down the move to safety or nickle right? Well hopefully we get healthy by November and this kid can get shifted to CB5 since he insisted on corner. Because he ain't it right now.

Yes Hampton is a good blitzer and has some pop, but we are trying to force him into that K.Scott role, and he's just not that versatile. Would like to see him and Dunnigan switch, but that may be a lot for a frosh.

- One cool lineup that we used late in the fourth- Lightfoot, Wilson and Booker Pickett on the defensive line, Bobby Pruitt and Dunnigan at linebacker, Brown, O'Connor, Zechariah Poyser, Thornton and Dylan Day in the defensive backfield. Tons of speed on the field.

There needs to be more Pruitt, point blank period, I don't understand this at all.

- While I can at least understand the rationale for playing conservative on offense, the decision to kick a 54-yard field goal makes no sense to me. Jake Weinberg is still an unproven young player, Mensah is more than capable of converting 4th and 4.

Apparently the only option would have been a WR screen

That sequence of WR screens was pure stupidity…If you are going to shut it down, run the ball, you are risking more clock stoppage or a play get blown up/fumble with WR screens and Wake ate it up.

Best case scenario if he hits the kick, it's still a two-score game. Someone needs to explain that one.

- I'm also disappointed we couldn't do more on kickoff return. The ACC is the top touchback conference in America, and we couldn't do anything despite finally getting opportunities to return.

There is a burst from Pringle on the KO returns, I think he breaks a couple big gains at some point if he keeps getting chances.

There was good and bad here, glad to see the defense shut it down in the 4th.

1-0 each week

Definitely an overreaction.

We lost Bain, Messidor and Mauigua
At receivers CJ Daniel’s and Marian
Too many defensive backs to mention
And now Brown and Lyle are out
We are definitely down a couple of notches
Keep Mensah healthy.
Fletcher always gets injured..

Who is actually in charge of special teams? Having lost the championship because of special teams you would think we would look into fixing that side of the ball. Kick off return looked awful, punt and punt coverage was really rough Joyce needs more air time giving returners way too much time. Don't need to bring up the field goal unit we will most likely lose a game this year strictly from that unit.
It is really a head scratcher that Mario, who is so detail oriented about every aspect of the game, continues to short change special teams. Poor play and/or mistakes have come back to bite this team more than once.

I hold my breath every time we punt. it seems to take so long to get the ball in the air.....

He’s running longer developing routes and Mali is thrown too before he can come open.
That said, the first couple games you could tell when they schemed a pass for Barkate to get something, but it wasn’t often. But that was missing against Wake. You’d think if Dawson was going to give Mensah the ball when Toney got hurt, that would be the time to dial up plays for those two, but thats not what Dawson called.

It’s not like they haven’t had a lot of success against the same caliber (or better) competition last year. To me, that is an indictment of Dawson not always being able to adjust in moments of adversity as quickly as he needs to.
there is no excuse not to have a bunch of plays for Barkate in your pocket. And after the speech this week about Mali not being the center of the offense, I really don't understand what happened on Friday. It seemed like the plan was to get Lofton more targets all night. IDK if that was intentional or if he was the only one open...

Lofton to FB..think about it

#1 - Shouts to CharMar Brown. Thank you for your service, brother. I hope we see you next year ready to ******* go. Devastating injury. You don't replace him. He is an important piece to winning a championship. He does everything and makes plays when they matter. Gave his season for this win. Hope this is the sacrifice the football gods want, and nothing more.

#2 - Wake is a pretty good team. And they played their asses off and they put a lil extra on those hits all game long. We're hurting today after playing them. Defensive line made the interior look rough at times. Slants on slants. The game is the game though. Friday night ACC game. Got that second half work from Gio Lopez and Carlos Hernandez. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month. This game goes very south for us under many other coaches, including the one we have now in another life. He's a better coach now and knows not to lose this game.

#3 - I think the story for the game for Miami was simple...once Mensah got rocked on that first incompletion, we went in a bit of a shell and got tighter once Fletcher and Toney were out. You really want to see the other guys step up, but Dawson got tight. That was the game plan though...attack the edges. It was a weakness of Wake's coming into the game...they just really had a great week of practice, I guess. They made us pay for trying them so much out in space. They were leaving the middle open most of the game...we should have had more of that Josh Moore TD all game long.

#4 - Alofaituli is small and he's not Mark Stepnoski, brother. Should be our utility guy that plays in jumbo packages as an extra lineman. He's got a skillset, but he's small. Usable, but not at LG. The interior needs to clean up the comms and clean up their understanding of the playcall. Silly mistakes. I don't think you wanted Cantwell out there for this one, but he should have been out there. They would have ****ed with his head all night with the slants, I'm sure. But the boy has to learn. We're tiny on the interior right now and could use him badly right now. Its a shame he's not ready for right tackle, McCoy at LG is missed and is probably the missing piece. I'm trying to be patient...offensive line needs reps together and this unit is just starting to work together, but the lack of size on the interior is tough with our run style.

#5 - Damon Wilson took away a turnover and cost us a drive that lead to Wake getting back into the game. Three games against our lightest work...Reuben Bain he is not.
#5- I thought it was Wilsons best game by far.

The defense is more than fine if you factor in injuries.

You guys are scared all of a sudden of FSU because they scored points on a Big 12 defense last night? SEC is back to their crappy defenses of 2020.

Not only hold your breath getting the punt in the air but also hold your breath for the return bc Hernandez caught a couple punts with nobody within 10 yards of him. It’s not the first time that’s happened this year and won’t be the last.

What he miss 2-3 games in a 4 year career?
He was dinged up and we had Martinez and then Brown in the lineup. During the playoffs, he was great. Move Lofton to FB to help. He’s big, blocks well and can be a good outlet pass receiver like Brown.
Now that Fletch has to go through the whole season with that many reps, he will get hurt.
Now our backups are a downgrade..jmo
