They both must have had teams cancel games on them and needed to fill the slot. So, the game is not a part of their 8 game ACC issued schedule and therefore would not count towards their records as it would give them an extra game if it did.

It's far fetched but just a hypothetical. If miami was in a position where the only reason virginia gets into the ACCCG over them is because that NC state game didn't count against them, do you think the committee would take that into consideration?

Because of the new ACC scheduling model, this game fell off. So both schools decided a home-and-home non conference rivalry game
