The key to being a great coach at Miami IMHO is different than almost every other program in the nation. South Florida is the most talent rich recruiting area in the nation. Our prior HC's who have had success here have been great recruiters but not necessarily great X's and O's guys. Butch Davis sucked on gameday. but built the best temas in CFB history, JJ was a very good game day coach but was perhaps the best evaluator of talent. Larry Coker wasn't much of a HC or recruiter but should have won 2 NC's in a row because of Butch's player......same with Dennis Erickson....although I thing he was better than Coker......it's be great if we had a recruiter and X's and O's guy, but history has proven that a great recruiter will win at Miami.

History has also shown that some of the greatest HC's started out with bad or medicore records and needed time to stockpile talent. You can certainly argue with Mario's decisions, but his recruiting and portal moves have been great so far.

I do believe this program is heading in the right direction, This team will get better just based on talent alone and even better with the financial commitment. IIRC we had a losing record in 1996 due to scholarship restrictions......in 4 years we should have been playing for the Natty and in 5 years we won it and in 6 years should hae won it back to back,

This program will be back. I understand the frustration, but I hope you all will still be fans to enjoy it when we finally get back.

Schnelly handed JJ a loaded team. JJ handed Erickson the same and he won 2 nattys. Then sh&y hit the fan till butch built the best team ever. Coker was the OC and inherited a phenomenal roster. It’s recruiting those players who want to win as a team. Team not individual accomplishments. Easier said than done with the new age paid athlete In a generation of entitlement.

Counterpoint:

The portal has altered the pro/con discussion away from the Great Recruiters/Poor Schematic Coaches towards the Great Schematic Coaches/Poor Recruiters.

Guys who may not be able to recruit all that well but are really good coaches can now achieve talent parity or near parity via the portal. Whereas there's no magic wand for guys who aren't very good coaches that will turn them into good coaches.

See Lane Kiffin vs Jimbo Fisher

with all due respect, you are standing in a long line of Miami fans who have been saying that same thing for the last 20 years
and it hasn't happened obviously.

Miami changed the paradigm for college football and won NCs by having more talented players, but that was 40 years ago
and those days are long gone. winning a NC today cannot be done with just talent alone.

And jj handed Miami an 8-5 first year record

Stop it. It isn’t 1990 anymore. The internet is a real thing. Recruiting services are a real thing. Social media is massive thing. There are about 2% of the diamond in the rough kids that there were 20-30 years ago.

You will never get all the elite talent in SFL and you won’t ever be able to line up and out talent UGA, Bama, or OSU. You have to outscheme them.

"The Revenge Tour" list grows longer by the season.

This old story again? With 30-40 year old historical data to prove it…Miami is different, blah blah blah. this talent hotbed, but then they get here and fans say they suck.

We're not that special.

We're a program with a nostalgic brand that's now consistently failed for about two decades.

I think it may be time to solve today or tomorrow's problems with something other than references to our past successes.
