Video proof that the ball was not secure

This is an example where forcing making a call and then requiring enough evidence to overturn it doesn’t work. They should have the option to say “we don’t have a clue what happened and need to review it to get it right based on all the looks we have.
Then every play would be reviewed in the ACC.

Still haven’t heard a clear explanation, but not sure control of ball was deciding issue. Somebody said play was already dead once player who was out of bounds touched the ball. Any rules experts?

Control of the ball is part of it.

If the receiver had control of the ball after making the catch, then it doesn't matter if a Miami defender or cheerleader or fan ran out to touch the ball.

But if the receiver does NOT have control of the ball and an out-of-bounds player touches the ball, then the play is incomplete and dead.

Period.

End of story.

Now then, think about it another way. If an OFFENSIVE player who is out of bounds touches the ball, would anyone have a problem understanding why THAT would be an incomplete pass ruling?

Well guess what, the rule is IDENTICAL if a DEFENSIVE player who is out of bounds touches the ball.

Incomplete pass.

Game over.

Shut the **** up, Hokies.

It was clear that no ref had a clue what happened as no one got a good view of it. That happens at times.

They had to make a call in order to review it. I don’t know the rationale/protocol of saying TD or incomplete, but it was clear they just picked one (because they had to) with the intent of reviewing it to get the actual call correct.

I wondered something similar. If the refs have no clue, why make a call? Go straight to review. Then the on-the-field call doesn't have the advantage of requiring conclusive proof for an overturn. And, what if the replay is inconclusive. Would "no play" be reasonable and replay the down be a better alternative than guessing?

ACC made a statement this AM -

The ACC early Saturday morning released a statement after the controversial ending of Friday night's game between the Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies, a drama-filled, 38-34 victory for the Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium.

"During the review process of the last play of the Virginia Tech at Miami game, it was determined that the loose ball was touched by a Miami player while he was out of bounds which makes it an incomplete pass and immediately ends the play," the ACC told multiple outlets hours after the game.

All good things to ponder, but I think you make the best call you can with all available looks and move on.
