What in the sam heck happened to this dude's career?

Consensus 5 star/Top 10 player national/McDonald's All American not even 6 years ago and by far the most heralded local recruit of the modern era (if not ever). Goes to Duke, averages 18 and 9 his freshman year and is a second team All-American.

Gets drafted early in the second round by the Hornets and is out of the NBA in 3 seasons. Goes to Turkey, plays a year there and is now out of basketball completely? What am I missing here?

He put up good numbers last year in Turkey so I was confused too, and honestly couldn’t find much either. If this tweet is true seems he got hurt last year.

Looks like a knee maybe, google translate isn’t exactly crushing it.

Did what’s best for his family, misguided by encourage family and friends got there money and moved on.

Vernon, Jr. tore his knee up pretty bad last year playing for Karsiyaka over in Turkey. They initially thought he'd be out for about 9-10 months but it's been over a year now. Hopefully will be back on the court soon. Nice kid. It's a shame his game didn't translate to the NBA.

His younger brother, Jaylen is currently in the portal.

I mean he was a second team All American and played at a high level at Duke. He had every right to pursue playing at the next level.
Yes yes , your right NBA is more of a shocker for kids to crack way harder than NFL .
I remember him he should’ve come Miami we always have the best interest of our kids and there families.

Too slow footed to switch onto wings and guards. Arms weren’t long enough and couldn’t jump high enough to be a rim protector / weakside shot blocker or a rim running lob threat. Not a good ball handler and has limited upside as a playmaker

Has a decent set shot but a slow release. Scores a lot of his points as a back to the basket post. He isn’t a legit 7 footer like Zubac where scoring thru the post is still a strong option.

basically ran into every problem jahlil okafor ran into. Because of okafor, he was more prepared for the changing NBA but wasn’t good enough to last.

Definitely should of returned to college, unless you’re a lock to be a lottery pick, it’s a massive gamble

Maybe you don't remember the 2020 NBA Draft. That was a weird year...

You'll notice in the video that there was no green room and no fans in attendance, because the draft was not a public event. Thanks to COVID, it was delayed until November and was basically a glorified teleconference.

Vernon Carey Jr, and everyone else in college basketball, saw the 2019-2020 season get cut short in March, with cancellations to most postseason tournaments. The NBA tried to keep the early entry process business as usual, but ultimately they had to delay everything by a few months -- their playoffs, the draft lottery, the declaration and withdrawal schedule.

Carey ended up being selected #32 in the draft. Even if he knew that his stock was going to drop him out of the first round, withdrawing from the draft before the August deadline may not have worked because Duke's roster was already set for the following season. At that time, transferring to another school would have required sitting out a year; the NCAA later amended that rule in April 2021.

Finally, NIL was still a couple of years away, and I'm sure it was tempting for a lot of borderline picks to just go pro and try to get some financial security, as opposed to returning to college and its many uncertainties during a pandemic.

I remember very well, and to claim his “draft stock fell”’is preposterous when he was going 35th pick in mock drafts on April 29th, ESPN had him going 28th before he declared for the NBA draft
