Utah for-profit equity deal: the endgame for CFP

This is a terrible thing for the sport.

They don't bring anything to the table except expectation for profitability. Any cash they provide will be expected back with interest. They might carry you through a start-up but the expectation is ROI.

Say what you want about the big NIL donors skewing the sport. At least they are motivated to elevate their teams. They aren't asking for anything in return beyond a good product on the field and the vanity of knowing they made it happen.

That giant sucking sound is the vacuum hose sliding into your pocket.

I don't even see why this sounds like a good idea to the University. What exactly are you getting besides mortgaging your future for an influx of cash. It reeks of desperation to me. In an effort to keep up, they jeopardizing future revenue for the quick buck.

This is ******* massive and something I thought would happen eventually. It makes total sense and will be the model. There’s just too much money needed and too much money to make.

My unsolicited advice to whoever has any pull at the program whatsoever: start planning this seriously. Start the conversations. Start pushing it. And line up Bezos and or Ken Griffin to be major backers. This is the next best thing to owning a NFL team as far as prestige, with a lot of real value potential.

Do it now. Be early to this like we were the transfer portal. Profit.

You’re confusing pe from a donor. We don’t need bezos private equity firm giving us money. We need a donation from bezos. Private equity would have us playing w 30 guys and 1 meal a day to save money

That's all fair and valid. Maybe it's besides the point, but I don't think it has to be a PE firm necessarily. That's why I bring up Bezos. A major sponsor and de facto partial owner could be a better fit. They still care about the bottom line of course, but it might be less pure cash generation focus and also clout, like sport team ownership usually is. So I'm not trying to focus on the PE aspect nor would I want that for the Hurricanes as the partner.

That being said regardless of who it is, yes, the general trend is in the direction you are describing. Ultimately, I think some of it is unavoidable, and some of it would be crossing the line and back fire in terms of brand damage and fan good will. You have to manage both things as a business which is not simple. Again, I think PE is almost always going to take it to far vs someone who has more money than god already and is more worried about legacy, prestige, community standing, etc. The operation needs to still be in the black and have healthy growth, but they don't have an incentive to bleed it dry.
I'm on board with that. Well stated.

No I’m not. Bezos isn’t a PE firm, there’s more ways to distribute and structure capital than donation, or PE lmao. The NFL only recently started allowing minority PE stakes in team. Something can be for profit, and not owned or driven by PE firms.

The Utah deal is 500 million. Miami should command well over a billion imo. If Bezos wanted to, which is doing a lot of work here, he could drop a billion on his own easy and bring in some more partners. Jeff Bezos is a multi multi billionaire, not a Private Equity group.

Nobody wants to play in Utah....so doesn't matter.

The problem is if a guy like Bezos gets involved with some other partners, it’s going to be profit driven. Bezos has no affiliation or loyalty to the program. I would rather not have PE or outside money involved, however, if you’re going to go that route you may as give an opportunity to the Mas brothers first, who have deep ties to the community and to the program. Plus to an earlier point mentioned, not for profit is a tax classification governed by the IRS, NCAA has no bearing on this status.

Walk me through this...

How does owning a college franchise have upside for a billionaire w/o divorcing themselves totally from said college?

I can see the severing part and keeping the name only I guess (at that point we have XFL 3.0 amd He Hate Me Jr.). But remaining apart of the academic institution only ends with pitch forks and torches in tbe streets.

And we haven't even touched on public vs private institutions.

Piggybacking off of this, from the article:

"Utah received clearance from the NCAA to enter the partnership, according to Yahoo Sports. It must abide by certain stipulations to remain an NCAA member, though. For instance, university president Taylor Randall and athletic director Mark Harlan must retain majority decision-making control."
It's done. Expect a dozen more of these 1 year from now and the rest to follow. $500 million, and that's for ******* Utah.
