we had down time, so here's something we can all learn today lol

This phenomenon is a significant fire hazard, particularly in dry, fuel-rich areas like the western U.S. during summer months, as the lightning can ignite wildfires.

    Here is why lightning can strike so far from its parent storm:
    • Horizontal travel: A bolt from the blue originates from the very top of a thunderstorm cloud, known as the anvil. The lightning flash travels horizontally for a great distance in the clear air away from the storm before angling down to the ground.
    • Greater distance and power: These positive lightning strikes can travel 10 to 25 miles away from the rain-producing part of the storm. They are also significantly more powerful and can carry higher voltages than the more common negative lightning strikes.
