Hows it going y'all. I figured y'all probably haven't watched too much of our season so a quick summary and Q/A from a lifelong fan would be informative.
USC finished the season 6-6 (3-5) after entering the season with high expectations and a preseason number 9 ranking. Going into the year we knew there would be some questions on defense at DB and on the DL that needed answering and after the 52-28 opening loss to aTm it was clear they weren't answered and some of those questions still remain. Our defense has been historically bad this year and the main reason is due to a complete lack of pass rush. We've been spoiled for years since we've always had a defensive line that can get after the QB and if not sack put pressure on him and force him to make difficult throws/decisions. That has been completely absent this year and its been tough to watch a team that could consistently get pressure with just 4 players rushing fail to get any even with blitzing linebackers. Really the only bright spots on this side of the ball are linebackers Skai Moore and Johnathon Walton and the coaches finally found a way to get both on the field at the same time in the last quarter of the season.
The offense has been historically great though. USC set a single season record for points and yards and our starting QB Dylan Thompson set the single season passing yards record. Running back Mike Davis could become only the second RB with multiple 1000 yard seasons and WR Pharoh Cooper set the single game record for receiving yards against UT with 233. Cooper runs our wild cat and is a true triple threat as he runs very well and has two pass TDs on the year. The offensive line is anchored by 5th year players LT Corey Robinson and LG AJ Cann. Cann has been mentioned as potentially the best interior guard in the nation and Robinson has great size that got him some NFL looks last year. RT Brandon Shell has NFL size as well, but the C and RG positions have been a weak link all season. We have had to start our 3rd string RG Will Sport for most the year due to injuries and he is just atrocious. I mean he is just awful and I was shocked he was allowed to come back on the team this year after his performance against UT last year. At C will be either Alan Knott or Clayton Stadnick. Stadnick played a lot last year but Knott has played more this year. Coaches say that whoever has the best snap starts since we run almost exclusively out of the shotgun, but both have had some awful snaps down the stretch this year.
The theme this season has been late game collapses. Against Mizzou, UK and UT we had two score leads with 7 mins left in the 4th yet went on to lose all 3 games. Part of the blame lies on Dylan Thompson as he looks like a deer caught in the headlights when the game is on the line. He took crippling sacks against Mizzou and UT, threw a pick six for UK's winning points and also tried to give the UGA game away by throwing a pick late in the 4th with a 3 point lead.
Anyways, if y'all have any questions let me know
