USC goes 7-5

I think there’s a connection with his offense and the defensive issues. I don’t think he’ll ever get over the hump. Even though bough he’s been at the door step a few times I never really believed it would happen. Their medicine was coming. You must be legit in both trenches to win. That’s the one reason I was ok with Mario.
He reminds me of Spurrier at Florida. If he gets his version of Stoops watch out, if not they'll just be a fun late night watch that can't ever get over the hump.

I noted in a previous post on this thread that Lincoln has the same problem most of the Leach Coaching Tree has, they don't understand complimentary football. This is why despite his brilliance, I was never sold on Leach being a guy that could win if given legit resources. You have to stop someone EVENTUALLY, you have to be able to salt games away with a strong running game, and Leach disciples don't believe in either one of those concepts. The Air Raid was invented as a matter of necessity, it is a way for a less talented team to keep pace with teams that are bigger, stronger and faster. The issue is that a lot of things that make the Air Raid and its offshoots unstoppable are also the same factors that make it an issue in big games.
These offenses were built to make up for talent and speed. Wider splits with the OL to help with throwing windows , using space to counter against more talented teams and put pressure on teams vertically / horizontally. We ran this offense when I was in HS in the mid 90’s , we beat teams we had no business beating. But at some point the trenches and the DL’s win at the highest level. Those Leach teams and most other air raid coaches could never get that type of talent. They win strictly with scheme / coaching. That’s why I have such a high level of respect for Leach.

Yes, they are winning with scheme. The issue is that it doesn't translate once you start upgrading talent. The Air Raid we see with Lincoln Riley and the rest of the Leach Tree is great when you are at a place where you don't stand a chance at getting that talent(Or in the case of Leach, someone that wasn't ever going to be a good recruiter), it isn't great if you want to win championships, or in places where you can get the talent. We see that with Lincoln Riley, we are starting to see that with Josh Heupel. The talent has improved, but the mindset that comes with the Air Raid doesn't lend itself to doing the things that championship teams do. The perfect hybrid is what UGA and Alabama are doing. They are tough and physical at the LOS, but they are also working in some spread concepts. The era of ramming it down someone's throat for four quarters is over, but you need to be able to do it when needed, and you need to be able to manufacture some explosives. The air raid can help you manufacture explosives, but you can't ignore defense or the trenches in the process. That's what Lincoln is doing, and it's going to cost him long term.

He’s the one developing those qb’s. One being a former walk on. His offense also allows those wr’s to develop and put up huge numbers. Yes his defense is trash and he’ll never win a natty but he’s a good coach.
And once again, he is only 40 years old. How many have accomplished what he has by this age? If this guy isn’t a top tier coach then who is? This fanbase does this insane thing where they set the standards for the other side irrationally high while lowering it for our guys. 7-5 is a major disappointment and he should feel some heat for it but to attack this guy’s bonafides because of it is laughable. He sucks next year and then the noise should get louder but up to this point he has accomplished things 99% of coaches never have.

People forget that winning a National Championship is usually luck, mixed in with coaching ability. People forget that there are tons of mediocre to lousy coaches that have a title, mostly because of something happening for them. Ed Orgeron, Gene Chizik, Jimbo Fisher, Larry Coker, Les Miles, the list goes on of average(Fisher/Miles) to bad(Orgeron, Chizik and Coker)coaches that have won titles. Keep in mind, Larry Coker and Gene Chizik have more titles than Mark Richt, and just as many as Mack Brown.

If you can hit on a generational talent at QB(Chizik/Fisher) or be the beneficiary of a loaded roster that required minimal oversight(Coker/Orgeron), you can win one.
This is the route that Mario needs to take if we have any chance of winning a championship with his coaching malpractice in roster management and in-game decision

I'd disagree.

That wasn't a problem when we were balling out. It wasn't a problem for Bama as they took ship after ship. The list goes on, but you don't need to slow your roll, you just need to have the right players and play caller over there.

The one thing I've wondered about what this constant problem is for his teams could be what the defense practiced against. You won't see a better scheme offense than a Riley one IMO. That though is part of the problem. They aren't defending against what they'll see other teams do when they face them.

I don’t know. It’s dumbfounding to me. He’s had players on defense, both at Bama and OK, to differing degrees. He’s had several coordinators. He doesn’t meddle on that side. It’s not like his defenses struggle; they are atrocious.

He was anointed a genius because he had 3 Heisman winners and 3 playoff appearances under his belt before the age of 40…
Funny how the porster that you responded to ignored all of the facts that you just posted. Riley is 1000 times the head coach that Mario could ever hope to be.

It’s also funny how people will say the most ridiculous things just to try to make themselves feel better about still supporting Wario Corchobal.

He 73-18, i mean he's no offensive guru like Mario but i think he'll be alright.

He's also getting **** because he did so well his first year when he completely turned them around.
Facts! Comparing a HC that has already had 3 Heisman Trophy winners, plus 3 playoff appearances and a 73-18 record to a guy that now has a 73-71 career record is laughable at best.

11-12 now, and 5-10 in ACC play. Losing more games at home in conference play than he’s won. Just a terrible comparison.

People watch football to be entertained. Riley’s teams at least do that. Watching Wario ball is like staying at the Sahara when you’re in Vegas.

Riley’s coaching job at USC is arguably the worst in CFB this season.

Generational QB, returning Hesiman winner, first class WR room, elite offense, hit the portal hard, great HS recruiting class. Anyone claiming USC wasn’t the favorite to win the PAC12 and a CFP contender is lying. Yes, the PAC12 improved but it’s not like Oregon and Washington came out of nowhere.

Result?

Epic collapse.

Lost 5 of their last 7 games, the 2 wins by 2 points in OT and 1 point. Scapegoated DC. Finished 7-5 and looking at a minor bowl game no one wants to play in. Caleb likely won’t, especially after some of the hits he took against UCLA.

Most disappointing team of the season by far, based on expectations going in.

Who would’ve thought USC and Miami might end up with the same record? Of course, I fully expect we will clown ourselves next week so we’ll be 6-6.
That would be an intriguing bowl matchup!
