USC did it right

USC did it right?

I don't think we know yet.
Yes, we can question Mario, true....but Lincoln Riley is "it"?

I like Riley, but his teams at OU went 0-4 in the CFBPO and gave up an average of 50.....that's 5-0...points per game.

Probably have a good argument for Lincoln underachieving at Oklahoma considering his predecessor played for national championships

But hey USC did it right getting a successful coach and we didn't by getting....a successful coach?

Problem for them is Riley isn't a lifer. If the NFL comes a calling he will be a walking.
The NFL did come calling already. He’s just making a ton in college so no reason for him to jump yet until he actually wins something here first and then gets the itch to try in the league.

In the NFL he has a cap. In college he doesn’t.

I certainly think USC is doing things to put them in yearly contention. To me, it's just a matter of time until they get another championship at their current rate. Should Riley fly or who knows what else, then we can revisit their projections.

Riley was the best hire that year or even thr last several years. I have many doubts about our guy, but if anyone thinks he was a better hire, I don't know what to say. It's okay to say that Riley was the best hire that year, it happens.

Real question: Red Pill, Blue Pill, or Orange Pill

Red Pill: 6 yrs going 66-13, 4 conference titles, 1 divisional title, 3 CFP appearances, 1 NY6 bowl win or

Blue Pill: 6 yrs going 43-21, 1 divisional title, 1 bowl win

Orange Pill: 5 yrs going 40-19, 2 conference titles, 3 divisional titles, 2 bowl wins (1 NY6)

Which pill r u taking?

Riley consistently has great offenses and mediocre to poor defenses. He can win conference championships that way but will never sniff the national title. Maybe he will break through at USC.

Meh. They're taking short cuts bringing in anything and everything from the portal. Totally ignoring culture and work ethic. Not trying to go full Mario bro here but it's the reality and there is a valid reason why the only programs to win championships in recent memory are Saban, Saban's disciple Kirby, and Dabo who has maintained the best locker room and culture in America for the last 8-9 years. Then obviously Orgeron with the most talented team in college football since the 2001 Canes.

That being said.. USC could sneak in this year, if there ever was a chance that formula will work. Heisman/Number 1 overall QB, dynamic offense, mediocre defense - but only because Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are going to be the weakest at QB they've been, individually and collectively, in the last 10 years. Still bet they choke because of the lack of culture.. just depends when/where they choke because the playoff gives you a 2nd chance now.

Yup. And they got a massive boost when Riley brought Williams in with him from Oklahoma. Game-changer for their program year one, with a ripple-effect that landed them Addison out of the portal, as well.

All that to say their defense was a complete abortion last year and until Riley starts putting a precedent on stopping opponents, not just outscoring them, they'll never win anything meaningful.

Pete Carroll built a defense at Troy when he was there—and when coupled with that talent on offense, made them a force.

You need to play some kind of defense in college football to win titles as you'll eventually run into someone who will get some stops.

USC is only having success because of Lincoln Riley, if he wanted to come here the same thing would be happening here.

... and the fact he brought in Williams, which landed them Addison last year.

Talk about turnkey; genius offensive minded head coach brings in Heisman-caliber quarterback, which lands them Bilitnikoff Award winning receiver Addison in the portal.

Still don't play a lick of defense, though.

Unfortunately there wasn't a Lincoln Riley type HC who was interested in coming here. We could of had his great value version in Lane Kiffin who was my choice to be our HC but we went with Mario who I do think will be better in the long run. Lane was always the quick fix.

Does
With how they recently revamped their program. All the big money programs spent on coaches and the movement in CFB at the end of 2021 with LSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, etc. USC is the biggest winner and I expect them to be competing for Championships in the very near future. It makes me wonder, why couldn’t Miami do their rebuild like USC?

Let’s recap a little here. USC was a putrid 4-8 in 2021. They somehow lure Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, a dude who took the Sooners to several CFP games while coaching multiple Heisman trophy winners during his time in Norman (Miami hasn’t had anyone sniff a Heisman in 20 years). Riley takes Caleb Williams with him and gets him a Heisman and USC a game away from the CFP in year one. Also worth mentioning USC is leaving the PAC-12 for the BIG, which will ultimately benefit the program long term. USC is doing what you need to do to actually compete for championships and restoring your program back to relevancy. USC is “back to work”.

Miami decides to throw cash at Mario Cristobal because he was doing above average at Oregon and he used to play here. Apparently he’s also some recruiting genius. Most people probably don’t even know Cristobal was rumored to be a candidate for the job in 2015 after Golden was canned, but I don’t think he was even granted an interview. While I understand he had some success at Oregon and I’m not trying to take away what he accomplished there, Oregon was pretty darn good before Mario ever got there (National Title Runner Up in 2010, 2014), and they didn’t take much of a step back without Mario in 2022. Oregon has been a strong program over the last 15 years. I don’t really give Mario credit for building anything there. None of his teams actually made the CFP or came close anyways. His most impressive win was beating Ohio State in the Shoe back in 2021. It was followed up with an embarrassing loss to 4-8 Stanford a couple weeks later.

My first HC choice back in 2021 was Lane Kiffin and believe we should have tried harder to get him. He’s a brilliant offensive mind and he would have helped TVD flourish, not regress with the ancient Mario/Gattis offense that focuses on time of possession rather than scoring points. Mario has a transfer portal and a billionaire buddy who can pay any player what they want, so the “not enough talent” argument isn’t going to be strong in 2023. I see people predicting a 7-8 win season for us in 2023 which is ludicrous considering how much money we’re giving Mario. I guess I just don’t understand why everybody thinks the world of this guy, or how he’s worth what we’re paying him. I wish we went the USC route and hired someone who actually knows how to get the most out of their players instead of someone living in 1993 with their “power spread” Lol.
Does the OP really think Lincoln Riley leaves OU for Miami? Just curious.

USC just got skull****ed again by a physical team. Ole Riley knows how to do that well.

I’ve seen some truly out there posts on this site over the years. Many of which coming from through and through homers. But this might take the cake
He’s going on his fifth year of employing Alex grinch as a DC and has never won a playoff game and is 1-4 in bowl games

He’s the best OC in all of football but a terrible HC
