Upon Further Review: Miami vs. Stanford

We discussed it in the corner show in offseason. I am a proponent of him playing the big nickel stuff like you would if you walked a LB out over a slot.

But iso with a slot having two way go? No. That's not his game.

I'm sure it feels like I'm dogging on him. He had a bad game. Many do. I've called out hundreds on these things and it doesn't mean they can't play etc.

Right now, he's having a hard time changing directions and seems unsure of himself. Hope he settles in.

I continually am impressed with the way all of our WRs block. Watching Mali pancake dudes is something else man. KB has gone a real job with that room. I remember some folks on here not wanting him as the coach at the time he was hired. Dude deserves some flowers.

Coach KB always has a productive WR room. Those guys can run routes, beat man to man coverage, catch the football, and they block on the perimeter. He's done a great job in my book, and the room is only going to get better as talent in the room continues to elevate.

Thanks for sharing. A few things I noticed:

Pass pro was excellent. Mensa had mostly clean pockets and was rarely hurried.​

Our WR are very good route runners, and also block like demons. Nice work by K. Beard.​

Mensa layers the ball very well. That out to Lofton for a first down was beautiful.​

​

Loved the variety of sets - from condensed 12 personnel with bunch to 10 personnel with 4 wide.​

Do not put an LB on Mali.​

During the season last year before he got hurt.. majority of the board was saying Damari Brown was our best cover corner. Lol we were on the **** of every fake insider hoping he would come back from injury and play in the CFP playoffs. Now after 1 game he sucks. Has the bleakness rubbed off?.

That’s cause he had a good pff grade because he was barely targeted cause he was never on top wrs. And against ND he blew up a few screens

It was more than that. I remember Florida tried to go after him deep and he held up well.. he was playing good and physical then he got hurt

Let the record reflect, it's not just me that noticed Damari Brown got beat multiple times in coverage.

Not impressed with him at all, huge step down from OJ in my opinion

I just can't have SJ out there in the scheme we run. Up tempo, tons of screens, outside zone scheme? Maybe.

But Miami loves inside runs with power. They love RPO game. They like moving people against their will and tight splits. SJ just doesn't have the size I want.

Personally, I'd go with Samson/Buch/Ryan/Cantwell/McCoy

Samson was the true standout in this game. McCoy was next. Everyone else has work to do (just like you'd expect them to).

With that in mind, what are your thoughts on RRod? Would you feel differently about SJ's role on this offense if he was next year's starting center?

FWIW, I thought he did pass pro well but as you said, struggled to move people in the run game. Buchanan was the inverse, imo - did fine in the run game but struggled some in the pass game.

Presnap recognized the alignment & guess outside run. Then disengaged with the blocker to get the TFL.

That's his strength as a Nickel, Frontside/Backside run support & collapsing the pocket as a Blitzer.

He's never been great in coverage going back to Boston College. He rarely ever dropped into the Deep 3rd, he pretty much exclusively played Cloud Hook & Hole Zones.

Heatherman thus far has used him in the same way.

Basically a big nickel. I was texting with Romancane during the game and pointed out he's nothing like Scott, so they need to cover him up more. He won't make the plays in coverage that Scott did, but he can do the same things in the run game, filling, and add some Overhang stuff.

Sounds like you're seeing it similarly.

Our average drive vs Stanford was 3:27 seconds. Stanford's was 2:20, so it's hard to get into a rhythm out of the gates for a bunch of guys in the trenches. We will sync up soon enough, and this offense and defensive line will get better when we need it.

Think about this for a minute.

We are talking about playing a “get right” game after we just won a 45-6 game against a conference opponent on the road (who gave us fits for a half last year), and we could have easily scored 70 if we wanted to.

Yes, there’s plenty to clean up. Show me another team who doesn’t also have plenty to clean up after their week 1 game. Ohio State gave up 2 sacks. Against BALL STATE.

We gave up 0 in a conference road game with 4 brand new starters at their respective positions.

We have come a long way.

The beautiful part about all this is, everything bad that happened can be cleaned up with better technique, or younger guys developing as the season goes along and then those players take over in a spot where we’re underperforming.

I keep saying it, I will continue to say it:

This is going to be a special season. Take a deep breath and enjoy every second of it.

Sounds like you're seeing it similarly.

I mean, it's a "problem" mainly because we had a legitimately elite Nickel corner last year. Had every tool you'd want, and apparently it's carried over to his role in the NFL. I'm now much more concerned with what happens at Corner, ironically.
