PalmBeachPost injury update Updates on injured Miami Hurricanes: Trayone Gray, Lawrence Cager | Canes Watch
So if Yearby (who's is gone ) and Gus leaves lets hope Choc can step up ,then maybe Brown and CMR will redshirt in coming freshman RBs
On Trayone Gray
A UM source said Gray, who had surgery in August, is running. However, it’s unclear if he will be able to return for spring drills in March.
“He’s doing well,” Brown said. “He’s coming along. There’s still a ways to go with the recovery process. He’s getting bigger, being in the weight room and being able to lift a lot more. I think after the season we’ll start to run more, straight-ahead, change-of-direction drills, and see how he progresses.”
A bigger Gray would be interesting. He is currently listed at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds. Gray, known to his teammates as “Choc,” has always had impressive athleticism, but hasn’t found a role (in three years on campus: 11 games, 29 carries, 169 yards, three touchdowns).

On Lawrence Cager
A UM source characterized Cager’s rehabilitation as “exceptional.” Brown said he expects the 6-5, 215-pound wideout to “come back ready to compete. I think he was in a great spot, before he got hurt, to help us out,” Brown said. “His mindset and mentality has been phenomenal. I think he’s attacked the rehab process and even the parts of his body that weren’t injured. I’m expecting him to come back in and get ready to take somebody’s spot.”
Cager was in line to start at the X (outside) receiver position. With Stacy Coley graduating, Ahmmon Richards would likely slide from the X to the Z (flanker) spot. It’s unclear if Cager will return this spring; a source characterized it as possible, but not definite.
Junior center Nick Linder, as reported last week, will be recovering from a third shoulder surgery during spring drills. Redshirt junior tackle Sunny Odogwu, a source said, was recently cleared for weight-bearing activities on his broken ankle but was spotted at practices this week on crutches. Linder was in a shoulder sling.
* Regarding two redshirt freshmen who played a few snaps in 2016 before getting hurt: UM expects defensive end Scott Patchan, who has had three knee operations since his senior year of high school, to return for January conditioning workouts. Patchan shined in brief action against Florida State before a meniscus tear. Linebacker Jamie Gordiner is further off; he tore his ACL in Miami’s season-opener and is on a similar timeline as Gray, according to a source.
* True freshman defensive lineman Tyreic Martin, who injured his MCL last August, was a scout-teamer for most of the season. According to a source, he will not travel to Orlando (along with a group of freshmen that includes Cedrick Wright, Michael Irvin II and Jovani Haskins) because of disciplinary reasons.
