University of Miami men's ice hockey team wins 3-0 on opening night

@rmacpaa1

You guys should do some recruiting at the Coral Springs ice den aka The Florida Panthers practice facility. You’ll probably improve your talent level. I know a couple guys who played for the University of Alaska from here and some lower tier D 1 schools

thanks for your recommendation, but only current university of miami students in good standing are eligible to participate.

Lol I meant the kids that go there brother. Bunch of Rec leagues and high school leagues play there. Just a little info for when y’all get classified for D1

In order for that to happen, Miami would have to add a women's sport as well, and I don't know if the school would be willing to make that commitment. There's a reason why Miami doesn't have the number of varsity sports as other places, it all comes down to financial considerations.

Exactly. Don't know the scholarship limits for hockey, but I know it is in the 11 scholarship range for lacrosse. My son wishes Miami had Men's Varsity Lacrosse. He was given a PWO to USAFA (only give schollies for kids who cannot get in otherwise) and a partial to Mount Saint Mary's. Not sure he wants to play club. Miami's club team has been awful the last couple of years. Figures first year he has to drop a grand to play. Not sure he can do while juggling engineering and ROTC.

thanks for your support.

Good luck tonight. Have fun. I'll let my son know. Unfortunately, he doesn't have wheels since he is a freshmen. He walks around campus ocassionally in his Washington Capitals Stanley Cup hat. Go Canes! Go Capitals!

you bring up a valid point in that there are quite a few students who lack wheels. we will forward a request to the admin. to consider organizing bus trips to and from the pines ice arena on game days.

Good luck. But the team is a bunch of sig ep and sig chi kids who couldn't sniff D3 NESCAC offers.

It shouldn't be advertised as a legitimate University of Miami sport when it's really a beer league for frat stars

Hockey isn't like football (it's actually far better, but that's another thread). The best of the best young hockey players often don't play collegiately...they play major junior (mostly in Canada, but there are a few teams in the northern US, too... Erie, Saginaw, etc.) from age 16-20. D1 teams are still really good players, but they might be more of the late bloomers, undersized kids, etc., that either can't or don't want to play major junior. So, the talent, size, skill disparity wouldn't be nearly as severe for college hockey as it is for FBS football.

Makes sense I had no idea. I figured it would be like if Miami-Dade college rolled out a football team and tried to go play against even a team like Duke. They probably wouldn't even be able to finish the game with all of the injuries.

It would be more like USA v. Russia in the 1980 Olympics. Longshots for sure, but competitive and capable of the upset. All it takes really is a hot goalie and a lucky bounce.

Makes sense. I figured more along the lines of some 260 pound D1 kid who has been in 5 years of Strength conditioning would just bulldoze some kids that really don't have a SC coach and aren't allowed to plan their classes around training.

our players are not only passionate about the game, but tough as nails and not about to back down from a challenge. come check us out and see for yourself.

Fantastic; quick question....can any of them play QB? Lol. J/k. Best to you guys!
