University of Miami men's ice hockey team wins 3-0 on opening night

We have a fuggin ice hockey team but refuse to have facilities or pay legit coaches for our football program. it infuriates me to no end just how much disdain our BOT and Boosters have for our football program.

You can't be this stupid. It's a CLUB SPORT. It isn't a varsity level program. In other words, these kids are paying for the privilege of playing.

Is there any chance you guys could become a varsity sport at some point in the future? Or has there not be any discussion of that?

In order for that to happen, Miami would have to add a women's sport as well, and I don't know if the school would be willing to make that commitment. There's a reason why Miami doesn't have the number of varsity sports as other places, it all comes down to financial considerations.

Good luck to you guys this season. I just got done playing puck tonight. Played all my life and coached for about 8 seasons up here in MN. Good to see it picking up down there. I'll get myself a hat or jersey once they're available.

our team's goal is to ascend to division 1 and for that to happen we will need the support of the canes community. please consider attending one (or more) of our games if possible and follow our journey on facebook and instagram. some of our games will also be available for online viewing (on a subscription basis) at:

Black Dog Hockey - Start
I'm just joking, dude. If I lived in Miami, I'd go.

I was telling somebody the other day I've been to a total of one hockey on my life. Somebody had an extra ticket for a Caps game, so I went. Over forty years ago. I grew up in South Florida in the '50's and '60's so I knew nothing about hockey. Can't even ice skate. When I was a kid, I went to a hotel in Miami Beach that had a skating rink. Tried skating, hated it.

Back in the early'80's we only had one radio sports call-in show in D.C. where I live. I hated it when people called in with hockey questions. Used to tell people I hated when people wasted time with hockey questions. I said I was going to call the show and complain about too much time spent on a regional sport of limited interest. Another guy told me if I did that the show would be inundated with hundreds of calls defending hockey and furious at me.

I don't know anything about Hockey, but I see you guys hit each other. Wouldn't you guys get seriously injured going up against a D1 team with a team full of walk ons?

This is me during hockey season when ESPN has whole segments of hockey coverage lol. Or when the top 10 plays have a couple hockey plays. Same with soccer, Tennis, etc.

our players are not only passionate about the game, but tough as nails and not about to back down from a challenge. come check us out and see for yourself.

I am sure you guys are. I didn't mean any disrespect. Its just that if a club football team or even a D3 team challenged a D1 football team. No matter how tough the guys are there are going to be a lot of injuries. I figured it would be the same thing for hockey. How long is your season? I plan to take a trip down in a couple months and would definetly come check you guys out to support the U.

Awesome stuff. I also played my entire life. I coach in NJ now.

I checked out the roster - no surprise looks like a lot of the guys are from NY, CT, etc. Im sure the guys are no slouches.

My kid reps the U hockey jersey in his beer league up in Canada.

Hockey isn't like football (it's actually far better, but that's another thread). The best of the best young hockey players often don't play collegiately...they play major junior (mostly in Canada, but there are a few teams in the northern US, too... Erie, Saginaw, etc.) from age 16-20. D1 teams are still really good players, but they might be more of the late bloomers, undersized kids, etc., that either can't or don't want to play major junior. So, the talent, size, skill disparity wouldn't be nearly as severe for college hockey as it is for FBS football.

You guys should do some recruiting at the Coral Springs ice den aka The Florida Panthers practice facility. You’ll probably improve your talent level. I know a couple guys who played for the University of Alaska from here and some lower tier D 1 schools
