Underperformers...Have cost us games

Coley, Chickillo, Kirby, Howard, Wyche, to name a few. To take the next step players cannot continue to hit a wall. The above players this year sometimes need to make one crucial play in a game, they have been non existent in games. I see to many times players in key spots in the game not making plays or having a negative effect by fumbling in key situations. You cannot sugar coat Duke fumbling problems more than once this year, Chickillo is terrible will not get drafted, Howard is a houdini disappearing act, Wyche came in overweight, Kirby cannot get off a block. BERRIOS TRUE FROSH MADE A KEY BLUNDER AGAINST FSU. All of this adds to losses, I m sorry but there is only so much coaches can teach. Players have to make plays a la Walford n Perryman.

Coley hasn't been right since he hurt his shoulder in the first game. He had a terrific freshman year. Chick is a grinder and a tweener. He's been a good player for us over 4 years. Wyche needed to redshirt. I think Kirby will have a very solid senior season. Howard lack of speed is his liability. He's still very solid in zone coverage. As for Berrios, how was that a blunder? It was an extremely tough catch.

Regarding your point, I think you overscore Chick's impact on games. Yes, he's a tweener and he was never meant to be a bulked up guy. He's a reserve guy who unfortunately, has been put in tough positions over the course of the last several years. I love 3G but he is what he is - an average player.

As for Coley, I'm sure he did bang up his shoulder but that shoulder should be fine for now, or at least much better. His part is mental.

Chick wasn't explosive coming out of high school. He was a high motor kid. Keeping him at 245 to 250 pounds was not going to make him a player who could seal off the edge at the point of attack. He should be playing 3-technique tackle and he could most certainly do that at 280 to 285 pounds a la Matt Walters, who played in the 270 to 275 pound range. Chick is a good player playing out of position in my opinion.

You're assuming Coley is healthy. I'm not so sure. I don't disagree that the mental aspect of the game is hurting him, but it could be due to the injury. He's got to learn how to play through it. He was terrific last year.

Back in the real world... this^^ mentality hurts recruiting more than 10 banners

Chick was kicking tackles asses all week at the Under Armour practices.

Golden chose to pack 45 pounds on him and turn him into a sloth to fit his archaic, Big 10 defense. Chick is a victim of a coach that has a body image issue and wants all his players to be as obese as him.

Golden is like the chick that says "well, I'm not gonna be the only one ordering fries!"

Ok OP, besides me wanting you to drop dead, I've created a little list for you:

Green Bay, New England, Arizona, Buffalo, San Fran, Cleveland, Seattle.

and here's a second list:

Oakland, Jets, Jacksonville, Washington.

The first list is the teams with the best turnover differential in the NFL. The second is the teams with the worst. The first list is a who's who of superbowl winning coaches and or coach of the year winners (except buffalo's coach). The second list is featuring all dead men walking coaches.

GET THIS IN YOUR HEAD YOU MOUTHBREATHING SACK OF GARBAGE: WELL COACHED TEAMS MAKE LESS MISTAKES, AND POORLY COACHED TEAMS MAKES LOADS F THEM

OP stacks ****s.

Lemme ask you a question....who's job is it to coach these players and develop them? Yup, your hero Goldens.

Agree with you, He lost any explosion he had.

This is the issue. Lots of guys play with hurt and the injury could not have been THAT bad considering he was always listed near the top of the depth chart every game after Louisville.

As for Chick, I never said he was explosive. He was actually a pretty advanced DE in HS for his technique and ability to rush the passer - think Rusty Medearis (a slow guy but he was a high motor guy who was an excellent technician off the edge). Instead, Golden wanted to transform him into basically a 4-3 DT/3-4 SDE. Square peg round hole. Agree on playing out of position.

Let's stay focused on Chick and not the defense Golden is running. What was explosive about Chick in 2011 when he weighed in around 240 pounds at end? The irony is Chick will play 3-4 end at the next level.

Not 2-gap 3-4 end.....Wouldn't be shocked to see him as a 5 technique 4-3 end either for a team like the Giants. He certainly won't have his time and talents wasted trying to play a heads up 2 gap okie front DE.

I remember several players who were considered "slow" and "unathletic"

Colin McCarthy (NFL starter) and Orlando Franklin (NFL starter). It would not shock me in the least to see Chick play 4-3 DE at the next level and excel. None of these kids reach their athletic potential at this school, a trend going on for a decade now.

Well, yeah, he's had 45 pounds packed on to him, of course he's now destined to play 3-4 end in the NFL.

And Golden's defense is relevant to the OPs point because a kid will under perform in a system that asked him to become morbidly obese. He was a great pass rusher all week at those Under Armour All-American game practices, beating the top tackles in the country. He showed great pass rushing skills.

Golden then asked him to become an edge-setting lard ***.

I knew you'd throw in Rusty. Rusty was a linebacker and a tight end in high school. He was much better athlete and more explosive than Chick. That was the winning formula. Take high school linebackers and make them into defensive ends. Take defensive ends and convert them into linebackers. Chick was always a 3-technique tackle in the right system in my opinion. But like I said the irony is he'll be drafted as a 3-4 end and probably be a pretty decend one.

I don't know a single 3 technique DT in the NFL over the last 15 years that has Chicks body type. He could probably play the tilted nose, but he's a little tall for that. He's a 5 technique DE all the way. With a better S and C program that developed lean muscle and fast twitch speed (aka, any modern S and C program) he will be fine in the NFL.

Yes I know that about Rusty, but at the end of the day he was still a 4.8/4.9 kid coming out of HS. He was an effective pass rusher in college at 240-250 and was never a burner. All that said, I'm sure we can agree that Chick was mis-used and played out of position here.

To all the naysayers, Uncle Luke, and the bandwagon fans this U is in a better position now than 3 yrs ago. We have a 9 win season, a top 5 recruiting class, and a bright future. Yes, our defense is below par but we are not to far away. Give Golden 2 more yrs, same results he must go. By 2015 at a minimum we must win ACC championship. Why 2 yrs, he will have a Senior-Junior team with 2 deep in every position, no excuses. Go CANES!!!!!
.

Every year since Al Golden took over this train wreck we have improved on and off the field. No more NCAA sanctions, more wins every year, n better recruiting class. Still many of the basement mental midgets here complain. We r not going to play for or win the NC every year, those days are over. I expect plus 9 wins a year n maybe more depending on how we project every year. Oh by the way, alum 1988.

This is all you need to know about OP.

I'm not of the mindset that you ALWAYS absolve the kids of responsibilty. That said, the corching has put them all in wayyyyyyy too many situations where one blunder seemingly turned a game. Hey how about providing decent enough coaching where they freakin' sometimes had a margin of error in games against teams like GT? Good corching has NEVER been able to mask random player *****-ups but I 'm sure the reverse has taken place more than once.
Do players make mistakes? Absolutely, all of the time. But like you said, when trends exist...

The irony in this thread is that OP is possibly one of the dullest posters on this website, yet has called others out for being "mental midgets"

MANNNNN, good stuff on calling us this bum!!

Coley will work his way out of this slump next year. Chickillo is playing as hard as he can, he is just lacking the talent. Kirby has shown signs of the lights finally going on. Howard has limited natural ability, as does Wyche.
