Under 150 Yards (Part 3)

And it needs to be said that the secondary played out of their minds today which I was so excited to see. This was against a very explosive offense not the glorified HS team we played last week. It seems as if the secondary is really beginning to gel. This is without OJ and Keonte to boot which makes it even more impressive. Give those 2 another week to heal before Pitt. All season I've been waiting patiently for this secondary to have everything click for them and it appears as though that is exactly what has happened. Xavier Lucas had the best game of his UM career and Jakobe Thomas was lights out. Bryce Fitzgerald continues to get more comfortable and Ethan O’Connor also played great.

I can't leave out the LB unit because they were very impressive in terms of the discipline they played with in the passing game and their run fits were phenomenal all game long. Wes, Chase, Mo and Popo were nails today.

What can be said about this Defensive Line? Yes Bain and Mesidor were their usual selves but that doesn't come close to telling the story. David Blay was out today. That's one of our top DTs against an offense as explosive as NC State and we didn't miss a beat. I'm sure Hollywood Smothers the ACC's leading rusher thought that he could rack up some yardage right up the middle of our defense. He thought wrong as Ahmad Moten, Justin Scott, Armando Blount and Donta Simpson combined with the rest of the defense to hold Smothers to -2 yards rushing on 7 carries while holding the Wolfpack to 23 total yards rushing. Meanwhile on the edges, it was great to see Marquis Lightfoot and Herbert Scroggins playing great football as I am very bullish on both of their long term potential. Just a fantastic game for this defense who undoubtedly heard all the talk about how explosive the Wolfpack's offense has been all season and what they did to Georgia Tech. Not one single upside down U today. Not one! It sucked to lose the shutout as I wanted it so bad for those kids. They played their hearts out and man what it ever great to see! I can't hit post reply without giving a huge shout out to our DC Corey Hetherman. Another poster just mentioned that Hetherman may be our best DC since Sonny Lubbick which is high praise indeed! I can't answer that quite yet but I will say that Corey Hetherman has been Mario Cristobal's best coordinator hire of his Miami tenure. The guy is a fantastic coach who is still relatively young and inexperienced(As a DC) who will only continue to learn and get better! 1-0 guys. Now onto Vag Tech.
Please somebody explain how Lucas was flagged for PI on that one play. I though he had perfect position and made a play? Then Brown gets mugged on his long catch but no PI on NC State.

Without three of our best players? The he defense is absolutely elite but don’t lie. Scott was the only one of our “best players” that didn’t play.
You could easily make the argument that OJ is our best corner and Blay is our best DT. Losing your top nickel, CB and DT and still absolutely man handling a good offensive team is an impressive feat.

The replay showed some contact. It was a bit tricky tack but not a blatant bad call. The phantom illegal motion call on the called back Toney touchdown was much worse.

Correct, even the play by play guy said it was BS, that there was no motion, he was set.

I agree. But they are not the best players on this defense. Scott, Thomas, Mesidore, and Bain.

Don’t think they even ran a play in UM territory until that last drive with the reserves in.
And by reserves we are talking about mostly true freshmen and a few walkons. The fact we had a guy at safety named Kelly (#36) is telling in terms of how dominate that performance was, and only then did the first team NC State offense find success

I’m that greedy, perhaps mentally ill person who wanted to keep them shutout and under 100 yards by virtually whatever reasonable means.
sadly I don’t think our HC has that mentality. Yesterday should have been a 56-0 type game. Once we got rolling early you keep your foot on the gas and start going with real tempo and send a message on offense. Instead we get a blemished 41-7 game that isn’t even listed on the ESPN main page.

What else did you want him to do? Leave our starting D in for the entire game?

Leave Beck and throw 15 times in the 4th? We still let Emory throw and even Nickel chucked one up.

Play with tempo for one. We’re still snapping the ball with :03-:05 on the play clock. We slow the game down when we should be speeding it up. We should want more possessions and plays not less. It comes back to bite us every year against teams we are markedly better than. We play slow and if teams get a couple of stops it’s the 3rd or 4th quarter before we know it and it’s a 3 point game with 1 possession left. NC State is a 5 win team with a good offense and one of the worst defenses in football.

It was front and center all afternoon until the night games started.

Idk what you want. The backups got much needed snaps. There is no reason to risk Injury to starters with 5 min left to go.

Give credit where it’s due. Yesterday was a GOOD day

We were playing the #119th ranked scoring defense and 124th ranked yards defense. We scored 4 offensive TDs in 3 quarters against them.

We did a lot of the same things we always do. Slow plodding offense for a lot of the first half. Penalties due to our time mismanagement. we came out of a 4 minute TV timeout, huddled and snapped the ball with 2-3 seconds left on the play clock. Our slow play cost us a TD (the illegal shift penalty). We stalled our drives throwing plays away. And we got lucky a couple of times. One that I remembered was the 1st and 20. Dawson calls a duo/a gap dive with Pringle who sneaks for 2-3 yards. They get pressure on 2nd and 17 and Beck, uncharacteristically slides left avoids the pressure and completes a downfield pass for a 1st down. I say lucky because 75% of the time against a defense with a pulse we aren’t converting a 1st and 20.

The DL is so fun to watch. Nothing more needs to be said about our 2 DEs. But Moten, Scott, and Blount held that DT Spot down and Lightfoot showed how physical he was. Scroggins was a surprise. Not the biggest but he look explosive and strong. I’m excited to see how much more Blount and Scroggins grows this offseason.

I think there was a lineup with Bain, Lightfoot, Blount, and Mesidor. Pretty cool to see.

Two things. Running up the score in a 41-0 game would not have made the tiniest bit of difference. Now if it was 21-0 and they wanted to keep the starters in to add another touchdown or two, I get it but when you’re beating a P5 opponent 41-0, scoring another touchdown or two isn’t going to do anything.

Secondly, since we’re judging how important our game is by being on the ESPN main page, should we have allowed a lm inferior opponent to play us super close like Georgia tech did? NCState is a much better team than UCLA. Why didn’t Ohio state beat them 60-0?
