UNC Massively Underperformed Week 1

They have App St, GA ST, ND, and VT between now and our game here in HRS.

This could be really good.
They were -2 @ Boone, and by the late 3Q against FAMU, that line was down to a pick ‘em. GA St is going to be one of the better teams in the Sun Belt as well, so that is certainly no gimme.

They could legitimately be 1-3 heading into a must-win game against VT, that defense looked pretty bad.

To that point we are 11-14 lifetime against them. Outside of Manny getting smashed the last 3 yrs they’ve still been a historical pain in our *** and I have a hard time wrapping my head around this program having an overall winning rec against us given the amount of times we’ve played them… (add Maryland to that too 8-9 overall)

🤯
UNC has been fairly physical on the lines. Physicality upfront has always given us problems.

FAMU had something like 20 guys out due to issues with paperwork, eligibility, etc.

It was a massive underperformance. But it was week 1. So while it is a red flag for week one they get a solid App St before Georgia St. So if they get to 3-0 heading into ND, Va Tech, Miami stretch you never know. But if App state can knock them off that could throw things off for them

I’ve said it b4 on here & I’ll say it again:

App St is a true litmus test. For P5 teams that’s gone in & blew them out, they’ve faired very successful on the season. For teams that either struggled to win or flat out lost, their season was chit.

If we see UNC beat App St by 10 or fewer or lose to them, they r more than likely losing at least 4 games like all of the previous P5 teams who struggled against App St.

Don't take much from these scrimmages, which is what they are. Some teams will start off looking great week 1 and get worse as the season continues. Other will do the opposite. They can look bad in these games because of poor execution but execute well against better teams. They have good talent and should have an idea of what they are when we play them in the ACC opener.

FAMU players voted not to play the game due to over 20 plus players that would miss the game. The FAMU Administration told the team that they would play given a $250,000 pay day. More than likely UNC didn't care.

FAMU runs clemsons offense just about.

Their wr is a player.

Buttttt...they were without their best player...starting tackle and multople other players.

I wanted to start this thread but you beat me to it.

That being said...they will be better by the time we play them and we are their super bowl every year...which is crazy because unc is so irrelevant to our fan base...but im telling tyou its everything to them folks in chapel hill.

450k pay day.;..

had famu not played they would have lost 900k.

They had to play this game...and they did real good with the circumstances.

I saw Mack Brown on the ACC network. His corch speak was how great this years team was going to be. Have a bad taste in their mouth from last years disappointing season. He had me a little worried until I saw them play FAMU. Sure looks like a mediocre ACC team me.

You're going back to the 60s and 70s for those all time head to heads

Meh…. It’s just when you see the teams we have an overall losing record to (regardless to how far back) there are ones you understand given when we started playing then there are head scratchers

Bama
UGA (last played the late 60’s)
ND
Auburn (last played the early 80’s)
LSU
Kentucky (last played the early 60’s)

I get it I guess… But

UNC
Maryland
GT (we’re 500 against)

Not so much.

Didn't notice until today, but UNC opened up its season versus Florida A&M this past weekend. The topline score doesn't tell the full story. For a supposed ACC Coastal Contender, UNC massively underperformed against a team with less talent, size, and resources. Some key facts from this game:
  • The spread was -44.5 UNC. Ultimately, UNC wasn't close to covering and won 56-24.
  • Going into the 4th, UNC was only up 35-24. A less than two-possession game against FAMU.
  • FAMU ended up putting up 335 yards of offense. 279 of those yards were in the air. Granted, UNC put up almost double that amount, but it's striking that their secondary got torched by an FCS School.
  • Time of possession between UNC and FAMU was a 31/29 split. Surprised to see that FAMU was able to sustain so many drives.
  • FAMU was 5/13 on 3rd Down, but 2/2 on 4th. Overall, FAMU was able to get 20 1st downs in this game.
  • FAMU was 28/39 in the air, completing 72% of its passes and averaging 7.2 yards per pass.
  • UNC was 29/38 in the air, completed 7.7 yds per pass, and completed 77% of its passes. UNC also had 314 yards on the ground, averaged 7.9 yds per carry on 40 attempts, and held FAMU to 56 yds on 27 attempts.
Overall, this is only one game, but this isn't the opener you wanted if you were Mack Brown. UNC's secondary got torched in the air, and they can't make the excuse that the 2 & 3's got torched since this was still a game going into the 4th. UNC's offense looked really good, but their defensive performance was plainly bad even after making FAMU's offense one-dimensional.

*EDIT: per a few posters below, FAMU was down 20+ players, which included 4 starters.*
Their offensive pass game was unimpressive to me. They completed a lot if short passes with run after the catch due to mismatches and confusion on the defense.

They rely on tempo to catch the defense out of the position.

They had 300+ in the run game, but that didn't tell the story. Most of those yards came when the defense wore down.

Several times FAMU was able stuff UNC for little to no game. On one drive in the 1st half, UNC couldn't score a running TD from 1st and goal the 5 yard line. They had to throw a pass on 4th down to score.

Overall, a completely underwhelming team. The announcers kept sayin UNC has a young team. Whatever they are, they look like a bottom tier ACC team.

I will be completely disappointed if the Canes don't roll them by 30. It was game 1 and I'm sure they'll improve by the time they play us, but since FAMU put up 24, UM should hang a 50 burger on them.

Yep… FAM’s HC is a former Clemson QB. Pretty sure he’s been welcomed to a coach’s clinic or two.
