To put it frankly, it’s not about the tuition. It’s the tuition + the fact that sum has had a declining academic reputation and has basically no presence in anything except medicine and maybeeee law still? Which is losing to FIU lol. No one is saying the same thing about Stanford tuition.

It is honestly embarrassing that the school has no visible community impact in tech for example, except the bare minimum, even as the city had a tech moment it failed to capitalize on.

Management seems to have improved but there are just so much low hanging fruit to pick that it’s hard to feel optimistic until it actually starts getting grabbed.

It was said in a recruiting thread recently that there's no such thing as overpaying. The price is the price.

That's true here too, but perception shapes reality. UM occupies a space that is far closer to Pepperdine than to Stanford (putting aside the world-class research being done at the medical and marine campuses). It's still viewed as a four year vacation destination- not an institution among the world's elite. We're being singled out, but the same post could have been written about any number of private universities.

OP mentioned the tech moment that Miami failed to capitalize. It's absolutely true- there really was no meaningful technological innovation to be found- just crypto grifters who decided to nestle in the fraud capital of America. We need a real diversification of the Miami economy. Right now we're running on tourism, real estate, outpatient elective procedures, and personal injury attorneys. Absolutely crazy.

The tech surge was overhyped but it has meaningfully increased. We had a lot of engineers and VCs move here. Many have left at this point, which imo could have played out differently if the ecosystem here had actually capitalized with help from institutions like UM.

But there’s still much more here than before COVID. Still opportunity to set up for the next opportunity, which could occur when the commie guy wins mayor in NYC and causes another exodus. If we want this to actually be a world class city with broad economic benefits for everyone the institutions need to invest, be forward thinking, and adaptable.

Yikes. Staying in state was a huge factor for me when getting my masters degree. Was looking at Carnegie Mellon, but WAY too expensive. I believe Miami is even more so

Private colleges are headed in this direction. It’s nuts bc people are willing to pay full msrp. It just doesn’t make sense anymore to pay that much for college. Better off going to a flagship, which have gotten MUCH better over the last decade.

Linkedin just put out it's first ever college ranking, using its extensive data in job placement; internships and recruiter demand; career success; network strength; and knowledge breadth.

Miami of Ohio is on it and not UM lol.

The "optics" have always been against UM. There's just an aspect of a tropical climate setting and an exotic locale (a la Miami Vice and Scarface) that is not in sync with academic excellence in the minds of many across the nation.

Despite improved academic ratings at various points, the school still, to a degree, battles the "Sun Tan U" image. Unfair but ....

A big part of the blame is the student loan program, a good idea that was disastrously implemented; tuitions were raised dramatically as a result.

What is also not being discussed is that scholarship money covers many attendees.

The student loan subsidies combined with the greedy universities is to blame. The university arms race imo, started really getting heated up in the late 90s. Fast forward 30 years later and you have universities full of bloat that have essentially become REITs. Have to keep raising tuition to keep up with the Joneses. I dont know how you unwind all that, though.

Do away with student loans completely (does the world really need more Marketing or Liberal Arts majors?) and give scholarships for STEM careers.

that would require drastically reducing a university's footprint which means <<<< $$.

As for doing away with student loans, do you mean all of it or just the federal piece?

I am a capitalist, if a private company wants to finance WITHOUT any federal involvement, thats their choice. I want the Federal government to get the eff out of the student loan business, they have no clue what they are doing, and let the marketplace do that.

But that doesn't address the issue. Student loans and university funding via high tuition are tied at the hip. How do you untangle that? and just curious, what does the federal student loan program does so poorly that private loan providers do so well?
