I gotta say Joe sure talks a good game. That's the easy part. We'll see if he backs it up with action over the next 2 or 3 years.

Amazon, Hulu, prime etc…
Hotels caught up and now almost all of them have access. Guess who’s next? Hospitals.
Sports bars will follow.

I doubt he would mention going independent as an empty threat.

Big networks are being saved by sports. The literally rely on them and would’ve dissolved if not for them imo.

I’ll say this again for those that don’t get it.

There is no other cfb program that will draw fans at the level that the university of Miami will.

Unfortunately, for college football fans, our team benefits from the city. And what I mean by that is that the hurricanes have a lot of bandwagon fans that tagalong when we win from all over the country. I’ve seen it firsthand when I was in the military, and I’ve heard that from people that lived and other states when we were winning as well. There’s a reason why they’ve been trying to kill us for so long and the reason why we were the first team that was under investigation for NIL.

The tv viewer number the last 2 regular seasons say otherwise. Can look at the mid numbers this year as well.

We've always been a trend-setter in CFB.

Being independent is very much on-brand for us and I would expect a high level of interest in our media rights.

I think the challenge is being at the mercy of other conferences for a preferential relationship. Everyone tolerates Notre Dame but i'm not sure there's an appetite to schedule more challenging non-conference opponents.
I think you’re right, the ACC would blackball us and the P2 wouldn’t want to schedule their extra p4 OOC against us either. (They would say we weren’t in a P4 so they can’t schedule us). I actually think some teams in the P2 got a little ND fatigue if they are not in conference.

I do think the Big 12 would be game because I think they would love to be featured on Prime, Apple or Netflix and try to find a future source for another conference channel.

Would that be enough to move the needle along with a game against FSU and some G6 teams?

I think it works for a short period of time (3-4 years), which would allow us to then be invited to the P2.

Thank you to all the TV execs and streaming services execs who are blessing us with their knowledge and expertise. Add in the AI input and it is frankly obvious that Miami will be making $20M more per year than any other school in the country soon.

You are feisty tonight.

Everyone thought bill gates was a moron when he said that there would be at least one computer in every home.
That same man also said that the robot industry will be just as impactful, if not more so than the computer revolution.
All you gotta do is follow the money or follow the old term “Big Bank take Little bank. It’s coming and nobody’s stopping it..

He couldn’t wait till after the season to say this? What the benefit of putting this out now.

No he couldn’t wait. Miami wants to get out in front of the passing of this bill and get changes done before it’s too late.

UM President Joe Echevarria sat down with Ross Dellenger at Yahoo and said out loud what everybody who follows this program has known for two years.

We're in the ACC, but we are not staying in the ACC if the math stays like this. And if Washington tries to trap us here, we'll go it alone.

His words: "you cannot lock us into a conference."

School presidents don't talk like that. They send out statements about valued partners and shared tradition. This one talks like a CEO running a board meeting, which makes sense, because he ran Deloitte. Steve "K9" Kim called him the anti-Tad Foote, and that's exactly right.

For the first time in a long time, the guy at the top of the university understands what the football program is worth.

Echevarria's case is simple. We won nearly every game you could win last year. We played for the national championship. We maxed out every dollar the ACC's model pays out. And we still landed at the same revenue level as Big Ten and SEC schools that don't invest like us or perform like us.

The Big Ten and SEC are the ones deciding where this sport goes, including the 24-team playoff, and the No. 1 team in the country sits at the kids' table without a vote.

He's not watching from a suite, either. He's at practice in a suit. He's on the sideline. The article describes him checking in on personnel decisions the way an NFL owner would, with his chief of staff Rudy Fernandez in the loop. He made the point that one week at No. 1 in football gets the university more attention than hiring a world-class scientist ever will.

Step one: kill the bill

The order of operations is clear. Kill the Protect College Sports Act.

It passed the Senate and now heads to the House. As written, it restricts conference expansion, which in practice locks Miami, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina into the ACC. Florida's senators broke with their own party to vote against it. Those four schools are the only ACC members fighting it.

Echevarria called the expansion restriction illogical, the kind of provision no modern business would ever agree to. Being less polite, this is the ACC Protection Act. Jim Phillips wants it because the conference is worse without us, and this article was a slap in the face to the commissioner.

The House is where it dies. Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina carry real weight there.

2030, and the fallback nobody expected to hear

Kill the bill and the date to circle is 2030. That's when our cost to leave the ACC drops below $100 million. Adios.

If the bill passes, Echevarria put independence on the table. He likes our chances because we're a national brand, but he also admitted it's ugly for everything else. The article mentions Amazon and other streaming partners as possible fallbacks. I read this as Plan C, not Plan A. But hearing a sitting president say it publicly is wild.

We've been here before. Miami won multiple national titles as an independent, before the Big East and long before the ACC. Steve became a Canes fan in that era, and he remembers early-2000s rumors about Miami going independent with a network partner. His worry is the schedule. He thinks there could be collusion between conferences, an internal memo that says don't schedule Miami. Look at the '80s. Some years we played Notre Dame, Florida and Florida State every season plus LSU, Michigan and Michigan State. Other years it was San Jose State, San Diego State, Cincinnati and Toledo. You need seven or eight real games to make it work.

So that's the story. Miami made it clear, with no equivocation, that we intend to leave the ACC for a better conference. We're going to fight the Protect College Sports Act. And if we can't kill it, we're prepared to go independent.

We went through every quote from the Dellenger piece on the show, including the parts not included here. Watch the full breakdown on the CanesInsight YouTube channel and subscribe so you don't miss what happens when this bill hits the House floor.

I thought, because of the FSU and Clemson suit, that we can get out of ACC football for $75 million while remaining for the other sports which is fine… Not true?

I don't think Miami would have a problem scheduling opponents as an Indy, especially if the end goal is to join a P2 conference. If the Big 10 knows Miami is coming in 3 years from the time they announce their independence, the Big 10 will have their teams schedule Miami in the meantime.

I was listening to a podcast, and they mentioned that everyone talks about the fear of the Big 10 and SEC commissioners getting on the phone with each other, and talk about becoming a Super Conference. However, they said the biggest fear should be if Alabama and Ohio State get on the phone with each other and ask why do they even need to be in a conference and share the wealth? If Miami goes independent, and gets a bag bigger than they would get with any conference, I would think the other blue bloods would follow Miami's lead.

With the 24 team playoff and the elimination of the conference championship games, do you really need to be in a conference? This could be the beginning of the death of the conference system.

Why not talk with the parties in private. You think calling the ACC a second tier conference in the middle of the season is a good idea. I guess the calls we get can’t get any worse.

Here's another thing that could benefit Miami. All of these streaming services are dying to make their mark in the sports viewership market. They could probably tell the service that part of the deal is the service needs to pay the ACC for Miami exiting the conference. They'd probably pay it too.

This is just not how things work. Public posturing is very effective. That's what's in large part controlled the direction of our country the last decade or so. Hiding in a conference room on the phone only appeases your mental state.

What are you talking about, everybody already knew all
Of this already. He has said this multiple times. He is basically saying Miami is ready for every eventually. He could have said this without saying the AcC is second tier part. And the personal insult thing is cute. My mental state is as appease as yours.

I don't think saying the ACC is second tier is a bad. He's right, they are second tier. ACC did not have a seat at the table in deciding anything regarding the CFP. All P5 conferences should have an equal say. Unfortunately, that's not the case. He wasn't bashing the ACC. He was just stating facts.

I have been screaming this for months and months. The bottom feeders of these conferences make the model inefficient and these schools will eventually rectify the problem.

That's why I said Miami should go start a new conference, instead of assuming we need to join one of the two, with only top tier teams. There is so much inertia and baggage within these conferences that one started from scratch will be miles and miles ahead of the curve.
