No shot in **** he is getting $4 million. I'd bet my life it is closer to $2.5 million base with incentives to bring it closer to $4 million, along with escalators. I would also be shocked if his contract doesnt have favorable buyout terms for UM in the event he doesnt work out. This administration has been dumb, but I just cant see how they wouldnt have learned from the Richt extension. I also think we are all flying blind as these contracts arent public. If the details of Golden's contract via his lawsuit are any evidence, maybe our UM lawyers arent that bad after all.
Remember, Manny wanted this job desperately. First rule of negotiation is to always be willing to walk away. UM had the leverage. For Manny to get them to offer before interviewing others he would have had to offer them a sweetheart deal. I also think Manny is smart enough to see the forest through the trees and play the long game, meaning take less now and spend that on a great staff, build a strong program, generate revenue, and then get a raise.
It looks like most of the board hates this hire and is saying it's lazy, safe, etc. I just don't think this is as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Yes, he is not an elite recruiter...but the last time I checked we pulled in a great defensive class in 2018 and still a solid defensive class in 2019 despite Richt completely burning down the program. Let's see what he can do with both sides of the ball playing aggressive, violent football.
I wanted to see UM go after Babers and Campbell, but if hiring Diaz means more money for an elite offensive staff then I think this can work. I't time to get on the phone with Lane Kiffin, Larry Fedora, and Bill Bedenbaugh. If those don't work out, look at Applewhite and Graham Harrell. He needs to give full autonomy to an OC and they need to be able to recruit that side of the ball.
I'd also like to see a change with S&C. Pretty sure we can all agree on that.
Beyond everything, Manny CANT hire anyone he is not willing to fire if they dont pull their weight. To this point, I think Manny has displayed the personality traits that are common to the most elite coaches in college football. Big egos, brash, aggressive, pricks that put winning and themselves above EVERYTHING. So now we get to see if he really is 'bout that life'. Here's hoping the answer is yes, and that we finally get back to being the bad boys that everyone loves to hate.
