Courtesy of Barry Jackson @ the Herald:

A six-pack of UM football nuggets as the Hurricanes returned to practice on Tuesday to prepare for the Orange Bowl against Wisconsin:

• We’re told the UM staff remains very high on freshman quarterback N’Kosi Perry, and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown said Perry has been receiving substantial second-team snaps, along with backup Evan Sherriffs.

“He’s done a great job,” Brown said. “He’s taken more second-team reps, kind of splitting those with Evan Sherriffs. He has made a step in the right direction and we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Where specifically has Perry improved since August?

“Just reps,” Brown said. “Being able to understand the offense better and know where to throw the ball and make the throws. He can do that anywhere on the field. Just being more comfortable with the offense.”

Brown said Perry will benefit from bowl practice snaps.

“Nothing like going against a Manny Diaz defense every day in practice,” Brown said. “Those reps will be good for him.”

Mark Richt has said all jobs are open in the spring, and Perry is expected to challenge Malik Rosier for the starting job, with Sherriffs and perhaps incoming Jarren Williams also being given a chance to compete. Cade Weldon remains on scholarship, too.

• Junior defensive tackle Kendrick Norton declined to say if he’s likely NFL-bound, and Mark Richt said no junior (beyond Mark Walton) has informed him he’s turning pro.

From what we’re hearing, I would be surprised if Norton and junior defensive tackle Richard McIntosh Jr. return for their senior season. Both know they have NFL futures. But I have no independent knowledge of a final decision by either.

Norton and McIntosh are roommates and close friends.

One person in contact with junior cornerback Michael Jackson said he also has been mulling whether to turn pro.

Junior safety Jaquan Johnson is expected to return for his senior season, according to a UM source.

• Brown said tight end Michael Irvin Jr. played well against Clemson.

“Replacing Chris Herndon is tough for everybody; he made our offense go run game wise, protection wise, route running,” Brown said. “Big shoes to fill. He did a really good job for the most part overall. We tried to limit his reps. He fought his butt off and played hard.”

• Richt said he has received no indication that he will lose any coach to another school. There has been speculation on social media that receivers coach Ron Dugans might join new FSU coach Willie Taggert with the Seminoles. But Dugans was at UM practice on Tuesday.

• Brown, asked to assess the seasons of freshman receivers Jeff Thomas and Mike Harley: “You never know until they get here. Those guys have progressed well. Phenomenal talents and will continue to get better for us.”

By the way, Darrell Langham - who helped save UM in the FSU game - said he has been getting fewer than a dozen snaps per game and he hopes to play more.

Langham said he has spoken to Ahmmon Richards in the wake of Richards’ knee injury before the Clemson game and Richards expects to be ready to go for the start of next season.

• More than a dozen of UM’s 20 oral commitments are expected to sign in the new three-day early signing period that starts Wednesday. Most of the UM commits were on campus last weekend.

Brown likes the new signing period.

“From Miami’s sake, I think we’re in good shape,” he said. “I like it. What I know is if you don’t have players, I can be the best coach in the world. I can stay in the office all day every day. But it doesn’t matter. We had a bunch of players on campus that will make us better in a hurry the minute they step foot on campus. I’m good with it.”

Pretty excited about the QB battle this spring. Would be nice to see some dimes thrown at the Spring Game. Last several years have been terrible.

If someone can't beat out Rosier in the spring, then we are going to eat butt next year. Rick is dying to hand the job to someone else.

Horrible article. Old news. Repeating stuff from weeks ago. He wasn’t posting any new info. Just scanned cis from the last couple weeks.

Glad to hear NKosi is getting the extra reps, but for the life of me I cannot understand what is so difficult to learn about this offense. seems as basic as an offense can be.

Was that article retyped for posting to this board? If not, the Herald has a UM football beat writer who can't even spell the name of the Canes backup QB. Shirreffs, not Sherriffs.

"Weldon remains on scholarship." Mentioning four other UM QBs that will "compete in the Spring," and following up with that statement about Weldon ??? If I were Weldon, I'm outta here. #5 on the depth chart?? With a chance to maybe move up to #3 or 4?

Amen bro, been a long *** time since we had a QB worth a damm around here. We'd be almost impossible to defend with a badazz under center, and with all the backs coming in and the ones here already I would love to see some two back sets with our QB under center, and with our WR's and all world TE now that's The U. To many weapons to defend

The Grim Richter has proven to be in full effect when it comes to dealing with his QB's. Reminds me a little of the Ol' Ball Corch- minus the sideline histrionics and scatterbrain aspects but definitely the highest personal standards.

I think Sherriffs transfers unless he just like the Miami life . He’s never going to be a starter here

Weldon may be number 5 b/c he’s in the doghouse. Who knows when he’s not in the doghouse.
Sounds like Perry runs scout team O so it’s not like he’s just sitting there running our offense full time.

So u want the kid to be a quitter? Nah, he's gonna be competing in the spring as hard as everyone else I'd bet.

Richt will decide the Qb in the spring, imo.(Perry) He will only use the offseason and fall camp as motivation/coaching tactics.

Couple of things:

- Glad N'Kosi is getting regular reps...As oppossed to Butch Jones' "leadership reps"

- Norton and McIntosh need to speak to the police:

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably more proud of Marcus Forston putting his a$$ on the line to protect members of my family and fellow alums as any other 'Cane fan...Heck, he recently helped rescue a man pinned down under a car after a drive by shooting!

The thing is, Forston knows that even having agent Drew R. and a lot of talent doesn't always mean NFL success. I think his perpective would be invaluable.

Langham deserved better. He showed his ability to high point, battle, and win the ball. Lack of use in the red zone and lack of snaps while Cager was stinking the joint up

Dude is too slow to get open. He needs to add 15 pounds and move to te.

I mean I don't think the reason he isn't playing right now is because He doesn't get the playbook. I think its because We were undefeated and Richt wasn't going to burn a redshirt year for a true frosh QB when we are undefeated, and by the time we lost to Pitt, we're definitely not going to burn a scholarship and throw a RSFR QB in the ACC championship game.

And lets be real here, Perry came in very late. It would have been very hard for any true frosh QB to win the starting job without being an EE. Maybe if Perry had been an EE, he would have won the job outright in the summer, or during the season. Well at least I'm hoping right now its not about Perry knowing the plays. I think its safe to assume he knows the plays. Maybe his understanding still isn't the best, but again hes a freshman QB. Its like people forget that.

Forston also never had a single season like Norton and McIntosh who have both put together back to back solid seasons
