What was she going to know at that point? Even if she did know something, she wouldn't have texted it out to anyone. The AD said more than once that he was in constant contact with AG. I don't know what more anyone would want.
So James was talking with Golden regularly because he said so but Donna was either completely in the dark or lying because she couldn't divulge any secrets while James was? I doubt it.
And if Donna's word isn't good enough for you, the players and recruits all came out and said that Golden wasn't returning their phone calls. The mods on this site have also echoed the sentiment that Golden was praying for the Penn State job and when he showed up at his end of the year press conference looking and acting depressed it confirmed the point that he had been rejected by his alma mater.

Ped State has had two chances to hire him and hasn't --- whether he was offered the job either time, rejected by them, or merely spoke to them out of courtesy, we'll likely never know. He's still here. The AD, his boss, certainly seemed to be satisfied with the level of communication he was getting. A lot of this Ped State ***** went down during a dead period for recruiting (12/23-1/3), so there's that, too. You all are just chasing ghosts, which is totally unnecessary. He's not winning enough games, and his defense sucks. You guys should stick to the low hanging fruit.

That's a fact, but that doesn't make them infallible. The players on the team said Golden wasn't communicating with him. That's a fact too. The dead period prohibits coaches from calling recruits, but recruits can call players, which they were doing. Golden wasn't picking up their phone calls. That's also a fact.
Actually, we do know what warranted Donna's response. Shalala's comment was a statement released to the media when they were inquiring where Golden had been for the last few days. So being the powerful women that she is with all the connections that she has, she took the time to gather intel, ask for her employees whereabouts, and came up with a statement where she admitted to not knowing anything, which I'm sure wasn't embarrassing whatsoever for a woman of her prestige. But I guess we could just go with your idea that everything was going swell and this was just blown out of proportion. The mods are good sources of insight, Golden was devoid of his usual, "Golden energy," and we do know what prompted Donna's statement.
Golden could have bailed when he was hit with the NCAA issues and he chose to stay with us back in December 2010/January 2011. Nobody is debating that point and I'm grateful that he did stick with us at the time. You're using the logical fallacy of there's no evidence to directly refute you therefore your point is correct. The fact that Blake James said we're talking all the time doesn't confirm anything. If he wasn't communicating with Golden, he couldn't very well say, "I have no idea where my head football coach is." without first actually talking to Shalala. Shalala's short response was a quick line to get the media off her back where she actually admitted that she, the person that runs the school, had no idea where Golden was. The fact that it was the dead period is irrelevant. Chad Thomas, Demetrius Jackson, and Anthony Moten all tweeted that Golden wasn't picking up their phone calls. But I'm sure that's just an unfortunate coincidence.
This is chasing ghosts since the Penn State vacancy has passed, but it is a legitimate reason to question his loyalty to the school, sincerity, and his belief that he can get the job done here. He came off looking fraudulent to the players and recruits, especially since he was selling the idea of, "we have work to do here and I'll be here to the better end to get the job done."
Penn State has had two chances to hire and hasn't. I agree with you there. That leaves the question as to why? My guess is that they don't want a Paterno disciple. Some would say his not winning enough games or his awful defense, as you so rightly pointed out, was the reason. Maybe having to pay us for buying him out is the reasons. This is where it really is just guesswork.
