UF’s OL concerns

I’m actually going to give Mertz some more credit than I initially intended to. Once I finish my full analysis, I plan on posting a write up about a week or so from the game. Here’s a small snippet.

Mertz had a 20:3 TD to INT ratio in 2023, and finished with double the big-time throws vs. turnover-worthy plays. This essentially means exceptional pass plays vs. plays that should result in turnovers a majority of the time (granted, it’s subjective, but pretty much within a pass or two).. By far the best season of his collegiate career to date (not saying much considering the previous years were trash), but he had 15 big-time throws vs 2 turnover-worthy plays on attempts of over 10 yards. When he does go deep, he’s pretty confident in it.

Now his issue is that he doesn’t push it downfield enough, and tends to lean on the conservative side.

***Obviously they have major issues at OL***- they were 15th in sacks in 2022, but 115th in 2023. Shuffling plenty of guys around + transfers, sliding Damien George from tackle to guard. Center is probably most solidified but Reports are no bueno along the OL thus far.

That plus their yards per carry dropped from 5.8 in 2022 to 4.1 in 2023, and they lost Etienne (4.1 yards after contact on 124 attempts) and now Montrell is banged up. So now you’ve got an OL that significantly regressed from 2022 to 2023 in both run and pass blocking, and is being shuffled around plus relying on a G5 transfer from San Diego State to elevate and stabilize the room.
You note declining OL performance from 22-23.

- What did they do to fix that? Only G5 transfer?
-- Do we assess it was effective? Why? Why not?

Do u know where you saw that? Just so surprising he was like the only guy they felt good about going into offseason

I probably started or at least contributed to that rumor earlier in this thread. I am quite certain I heard on one of the "inside" guys podcasts they had doubts about Slaughter but I couldn't find it when I went back to double check. So I may be totally full of ****, and it was a discussion about their interior OL which was terrible last year being just as bad this year?

Regardless, they have problems and lots of people are talking about it. For example, their Locked On Gators guy spent the first 9:45 seconds of his scrimmage review today apologizing for how bad the OL looked:

Sorry, not sorry but I ain’t watching that.

Totally understand.

It was hilarious to me in so many ways though. First, the vlogger himself looks like a caricature of what we think of a Gator fan. Then he spends nearly 10 minutes throwing shade all around about the OL. Then he talks about the injury to their rotational NG and how big of an negative impact that will have. ... It was just so nice to see the shoe on the other foot man, it not being us but our archrival trying to find some way to rationalize how recruits that no one else wanted other than Buffalo or Wake Forest were going to lead the team to victory. That was this guy.

And jeffey Thomas muffing that punt.

By next week the word will be that the OL is fine. The “problem” is that the DL is completely unblock able and will be all ywar

LOL at the excuse that they are just “starting to play together”. Translation: They have OL issues.

Now go and listen to an Ali Peek/Chris Doering podcast and they are sucking off the whole OL and bragging how good they are.

I felt that UF didn’t have a pass rush before their scrimmage notes and it seems it’s the same. They have very large DTs but our interior OL has major size also. I don’t think these DEs they have will generate much pressure if any. I do think Shemar is a very good college LB so we just need to make sure we get to the second level quickly.

Bruh that’s still my concern about the defense….can we generate consistent pressure from our DE’s w/o blitzing? We haven’t been able to do that since 2019 (when we had Zuniga and Greenard). I still don’t see any quick twitch DE’s

Plus you lost your best pass rusher to ole ****

I’m genuinely curious your thoughts because I get it Cane haters thinking the Gators didn’t get better at all but my thing is that yes you’ll be improved on defense….but at what level? It was a horrendous defense last year and while I get it Princely’s advance tape showed he wasn’t as good as his name is perceived to be but he generated pressures. Maybe Boone is healthy and can and maybe the young DEs show more but I just don’t see where you’re getting pressure from since your DTs are ALL jumbo as **** lol

Don't you guys return someone who missed 2023 or missed time in 2023 that plays DE/Edge? Supposed to be pretty good.

I don't think an elite pass rusher by any means but gator fans I've talked too felt good about the pass rush being ok because this guy was back. Can't remember the name.

Doering is a tool. Those two spout off so much crap without having put in any background work to back up their uninformed opinions. He would be unwatchable even if he were a Cane. Guy is an outright "stupid is as stupid does" Forrest Gump ripoff.
