UCLA going all in for Chip Kelly

UF is undoubtedly a better job but it's probably not as good a fit for Chip. He's a west coast guy and would be the best coach in the PAC 12 the second he signed with UCLA, whereas at UF he'd have to compete with the big boys year in and year out. At UCLA he can win 8-11 games and be there forever.

UCLA doesn't have to play Georgia, LSU and FSU each year. There is no pressure to win the way the Gaytors put on their coaches, right or wrong. UCLA is a basketball school. It has proximity to talent AND is a place where Chip can lay low and just coach ball. His system works on the West Coast. I think it's just a better fit. All he has to do is beat USC and he's good to go.

No, but he has to beat USC and Stanford. The pressure to win in the SEC is unlike any other conference in the nation. Salaries have escalated to a point where the expectations are even worse than they ever have been in that conference. Guys like Les Miles and Mark Richt get canned. Kevin Sumlin about to get fired. A month ago Gus Malzahn was nearly a dead man walking. The SEC fan base is insane.

To me Kelly makes sense for UCLA for exactly what you imply--much lower expectations. They kept Neuweasel for 4 years and Dorrell for 5 years. Oregon was filled with California and west coast kids. It will be much easier for Kelly to recruit since he has an already established pipeline.

Kelly can win 9 games per year at UCLA and coach for as long as he wants. He wins 9 games at Florida and fails to win the division and he is in trouble. Plus, with Spurrier and Foley looking over his shoulder this dude will have none of that.

A better job based on what? If Kelly wants to win, UCLA would be better than the sec gauntlet.

For a guy like Kelly, it's easy to see why he would prefer UCLA. Most of their fans are upset Mora was fired and they will be patient with Kelly. Florida is not an easy job, hard to win their. Zook, Muschamp, McElwain all run out of town in 3/4 years. Also, Kelly is a wealthy guy. East coast, West coast guy. For him UCLA will be much better place to live. Finally, Mora did a lot of the heavy lifting. Very comparable to what Richt inherited. Granted there is only one U!

If Kelly is a west coast guy, why is he living in New Hampshire right now? I get he is in studio on saturdays but that is it. He grew up in New Hampshire, went to the University of New Hampshire, and coached for an additional 16 years in the Northeast before going to Oregon. His time at Oregon from 2007-2012 and 1 year with the 49ers are the only years he has been on the west coast.

UCLA has no history of winning, a far worse recruiting base and isn't committed to winning big. It's an above average job but its not elite. On the other hand, UF has a great history, is committed to winning and is situated in an elite recruiting base. The drawbacks are unrealistic expectations, fierce recruiting and the SEC. It's a top 10 job, whereas UCLA might be a top 40 job.

UCLA is not paying $12M to buy out Mora Jr and then pay Chip Kelly a top salary to settle for 9-4 with occasional wins over USC. Mora was paid $3.7M for 2017. Kelly will demand a salary of $4M+.

As @Tad Footeball posted, UCLA is having their Miami moment. If they want to win they need to spend the money.

UCLA is going all in...let me add, not sure if that is even close to what the Turds have to offer. Also, no idea where Chip Kelly wants to coach.

I'd take Peterson over him. But not by a large margin.

I think one can argue both, but I'd say UCLA is the better job. He's familiar with the conference, he's recruited those same areas, he can go crazy with his offense as they don't play a lot of defense and UCLA has really been substandard with regard to talent and I think they can have killer recruiting classes. USC was the lone dog in the state for a long time but that can change quickly.

I agree that it's a better job FOR Chip.

So the gators have settled in on Randy? those sly devils, snatching an experience HC on the cheap.

No doubt. Can a coach come in and win at UF quicker than UCLA? Yep. Too much talent not to and all he has to do is have a top flight DC (a la Urban>Strong) and a dynamic offensive playcaller and that team will roll. I think Chip CAN win at UF with a good DC in place but for the reasons I outlined above, there are more ifs in that scenario (not familiar with recruiting areas, etc.).

gotta love this board. sitting here with the #2 team in the country and all you guys can do is talk rumors about chip kelly.. is your life so small and your appreciation for the Canes so lost that you worship kelly??

Chip Kelly at UF, will be competition for in-state recruits.

Chip Kelly at UCLA, won't be competition for recruits.

Seems that people here would pay attention to what happens in Gainesville, no? It really isn't that difficult to understand....at least it shouldn't be even if you're living the "BIG LIFE" one such as you lives.
