LOL. What I mean is, can Butch Davis overcome the monetary advantage? It's not like 1999 when a 5 star recruit got $100K and a car to go to Florida. A&M is going to have a $120M minimal annual payroll by the time that they get to the 2025, based on what they are spending per class.

The question is - was Butch such a good recruiter above and beyond everyone that he could negate a school that is willing to spend $30M at minimum per year on its class.

In a word, YES.
Fwiw he’d also find and develop talent no one else would. I’m often amazed that people who know the Miami Hurricanes underestimate him. What he accomplished here, in Dallas, Cleveland and North Carolina is a singular one off. A one man wrecking crew.
 
For the sake of our program and Mario, they better beat UNC and go on a run leading up to FSU because if he doesn’t, selling anything to the fan base or recruits is going to be nearly impossible.

We must beat FSU. 7-5, 6-6 is not going to cut it.

He can sell, “hey, our roughest patch was TAM & MTS and look how we where able to rebound.”

But what has happened so far is not any indication of progress. The reason the loss to MTSU was so painful is because he had already screwed up our best player and our offense. 2 terrible miscalculations. Then you add to it that we lost to such an inferior team and got blown up on both lines? Unacceptable and devastating.

After the A&M game most fans were saying "yeah our offense needs some major improvement but at least we're strong, physical, and can dominate the LOS the rest of the season against the ACC." We also showed up and competed until the very end It was something to indicate progress and recognize Mario's commitment to the trenches and the mental side of the game.

The loss to MTSU threw all that out the window.

There's a difference with being patient after a few closes losses to ACC opponents vs a blowout loss to MTSU.

My fear is that this loss worms its way into Miamis head.
Then MTSU bests us multiple times..
 
Most every elite high school player in the state of Florida now goes to play their college football in the state of Georgia or Alabama.

Fair point. Difference is this coach won two PAC 12 titles. The others you mentioned did absolutely nothing to deserve patience.

And my answer was/is....
If Butch (back in the day) had the unlimited support like Mario has from the administration (Butch had none) and several BIG-TIME Boosters at his disposal like Mario has had....Cot **** right he'd overcome it.

No excuses for the loss last week, one of the more embarrassing losses I can remember but I trying to take it all in stride. We knew Mario had warts we just saw one pop up earlier than we thought. I was never 100% sold Mario was going to take us to the promised land but I was sold he was going to make us a respectable program again because he can recruit and knows what a top tier program looks like.

In 2-3 years, we will be absolutely loaded and we will win. The concern will continue to be bad preparation and game day coaching. Some of the preparation will naturally get fixed with better talent and culture but we will be always dumbfounded with inexplicable losses. This one was just really bad and early.
 
I couldn’t care less about MTSU. Sucks but this current crop doesn’t surprise me. What would surprise me is if we curb stomped everyone weekly.

We weren’t winning the National Championship anyhow, and I was just going to be happy if we won our side of the ACC.

We need new blood and everyone says that, gets excited when he starts to get 5 star players who aren’t even here or contributing yet, then says CMC sucks because he lost with players everyone wanted replaced.

Bad coaching? Maybe. But what is the lipstick and pig saying?

If we get better starting next year and continue until we are dominant again great. If not? Next but he deserves a few years.

Edit…and I don’t care what style he runs, where they played their high school ball, how many stars, if they are from the south (sick of hearing about s. Fla kids who seem to only perform wearing different colors)….just win baby.

He won a couple PAC 12 titles so not sure I am qualified to judge just yet

He’s being paid like a top 10 coach and he was ranked as a top 15-20 coach in the last two years of CBS’s top CFB coaches. He’s a little overpaid right now, but he also just signed the contract. Wait 2-3 years and he’ll be out of the top 10 and probably around 15-20.

I don’t know why people hold it against him that he got paid. No matter who we brought in we were going to need to pay up to get a guy with pedigree or credentials.

Florida got G5 Billy for less because he hasn’t won a P5 conference title and didn’t have Phil Knight funding his program.

If we went after Billy instead people would be ****ed that we went after someone that had never done it at a real program blah blah

The rational fans I think knew it would take time and we knew of Mario’s limitations as a coach.

Last week was ******* awful but sometimes **** happens in college football and even though I’m disappointed I’m not writing off his program until he has had time to build it and get his guys in there.

Butch greatly benefited that he lived in a time before Hudl too. A lot easier back then to find “diamonds in the rough” because the recruiting services and industry was wayyy different back then.

South florida has probably the highest concentration of elite talent in the country. Now everyone can watch and plan trips because they saw a kid on film but back then film wasn’t as good or as available
 
I am more than willing to give Mario and crew the time needed to get things straight. Since Coker and being shalalaized this program has been comatose for 20 years. No coach including Saban could walk in to this inept bunch and pull a miracle anytime soon. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before or experienced. Fire Gattis ,Steele, Mario it doesn’t matter, the result will be the same. We got Mario we got Reed we got Alonzo we have a staff and ex players coming back to help out, and we got blown out by nobody. Yea we will win a game we shouldn’t and we‘ll lose a few we shouldn’t. Alabama has been through so many coordinators yet they still win, give Mario the time to turn the “ culture “ just like Saban.It doesn’t matter who Saban hires the culture there of winning and losing being unacceptable is concrete, and because of this he will always have a top recruiting class And be playoff bound.

Butch finding diamonds in the rough had NOTHING to do with HUDL...SCOUT..etc...
He had no choice being down 30 schollies, no TV or Bowl etc...Give Butch a Brinks Truck and an Administration that worships him like Saban, and it wouldn't have been fair.
